Finally, our airship unlocked Sector 8 and was able to visit it on its last journey! I confirm that visiting Sector 08 is definitely the way to unlock second airship, though nothing seems to show up in the voyage log indicating this, you'll see it in FC activity log. Too bad it took us until rank 30 for RNG sector unlock to kick in. Airship is full Enterprise by now and has been aptly renamed enDERPrise
By the way... our FC is moving to a large house this weekend. we'll have info about what happens when you dismantle an airship, destroy the workshop and rebuild it in a new house. This would be good stuff to add to the guide, once we know what's preserved and what's lost in such cases.
Started to keep track of the sectors being discovered. Here's what I got so far:
sector 6 > 8 > 7 - sectors 9 and 11 discovered
sector 5 > 7 > 8 > 9 - sector 10 discovered
sector 1 > 6 > 9 > 11 - sector 13 discovered
10 > 9 > 8
unlocked sector 12 from Sector 10
I'm having trouble unlocking Sector 8, and have been for almost two weeks now. We've unlocked sectors 1-7 and 11, Our airship is rank 27, and we're using two Invincible parts(Propellers and Aftcastle) and two Enterprise parts(Hull and Forecastle). I've been alternating voyages between just sector 7 or a full trip of sectors 7-5-6-3, when I know I won't be able to attend to the airship for a span of time.
Is something going wrong? I feel our airship has adequate stats, and from what I understand sector 8 is discovered via sector 7, so I've been hitting that hard as I can. If we don't discover sector 8 in a few more voyages, we'll either have to say "screw it" to the second airship gained there, or miss out on going to sector 11 and beyond until the RNG is kind enough to us to give us access to sectors 8-10. Any advice would be appreciated.

Finally found sector 8... the little lalafell can't await to launch his own toyship tomorrow. :)
Every-time i convince myself that the "bonus" theorie can't be complete wrong (found 2 sectors in a row after S ratings with my slow and short range explorer build where an equals distribution stats build failed multiple times) there are evidences which disproves it (like the 2 posts above me) . RNG can be cruel sometimes.
@Altaworks Discovered it today after a short SC07->SC06 trip with Enerprise Hull/Forecastle and Bronco Rigging/Aftcastle maybe you can retry this ?
I worry your ship will revert to rank 1 in the new house :( As shown, it's not the parts that make the ship, since you can change out all the parts and still have the same ship. Knowing how SE does things, it would be a pleasant surprise to me if you could move without losing your ship.
My FC is having a lot of trouble finding sector SC08 too :( We have 1-7+11 like others, and we're running full Invincible. We can upgrade parts to Enterprise, but I'm not convinced that will even help...
They mentioned before they're going to add in a way to transfer houses before or at the same time they release Ishgard housing, which I assume is specifically addressing keeping workshop progress.
We're having much the same trouble as you. I've been out of it for a few days being sick but I'm gathering all our logs and will input. Like Yarem said, I think it's just harsh RNG and we just gotta keep combating it with more runs to the sectors. Keep after it, you at least have better ship parts than us :p
Yeah, beyond visiting the right sector no one has found the magic formula for unlocking sectors :( The surveillance theory seems very unsupported. I tried to be clear in the OP that it is basically no more than superstition at this point, but it might be time to take it out entirely, at least from the sector map.
I had a heck of a time finding sector 5. The only thing I can say is that it was after sector 02, and I had just upgraded my Aftcastle to Invincible when I finally found it. I had been rocking Invincible/Bronco/Invincible/Bronco for five or so attempts with absolutely no luck until I made that change. It's still probably voodoo, though.
Meanwhile, I've found a new sector on every one of my last voyages (5-8) with the same equippage.
Airship #3 unlocked!
First time exploring sector 14 did it, also have yet to unlock sector 12 on map so all silver sectors are not required.

Also here's a thought; based on what our airships have brought back the bronze sectors give III materia, the silver sectors IV materia... maybe the gold sectors give V materia?
Alright, further info on airship dismantling:
We've just trashed out Workshop in preparation for tomorrow's move.
So far I can confirm that:
• Dismantling an airship resets its rank to 1 (there is a warning about this in the dismantling dialog)
• All parts are returned to the inventory, they are not destroyed in the process.
What remains to be determined, will know more tomorrow:
• Are unlocked prototypes retained in the Company Crafting Log after moving?
• Are extra airship slots retained after moving?
• Are unlocked skymap sectors retained after moving?

On the bright side, if we have to completely entirely start over, we're already sitting on a few materials that will let us unlock prototypes again pronto. Plus, we have all parts all the way up to enterprise, so we won't have to fuss with crafting these all over again.
Note: We did not try destroying the workshop with the airship still stationed. I'm fairly certain this would not have worked, but if anyone else is in our situation, maybe try that first and see if it lets you keep your airship and rank. I doubt it though.
Seriously, we just got our ship back again from another solo SC07 run with nothing to show for it. This has got to be our 5th or 6th run to the sector with no sign of SC08. Definitely getting frustrated. We're using a full invincible build and I know a number of people have said they had enterprise parts by now so perhaps it's not safe to scrap the ship stat theory.
RNG is massive here. We did a couple solo runs of 07 will full invincible, and just unlocked it. We changed nothing. It's just luck.
I'm getting a bit discouraged by ship stats... I just did a weather vs Favor analysis, and it suggests that there's no correlation. With the two favor stats that we have over 100 data points for, it's exactly 10% no wind, 30% high wind, and 60% turbulence, for both 70 favor and 80 favor. That's across all sectors - the per sector per favor stat breakdown doesn't have enough datapoints, but looks like it'll converge on this 10/30/60 split.
On the "plus" side, I can't find a correlation between weather condition and retrieval rating (normal/high/optimal) either, so... I don't know if weather actually affects anything either.
I think Favor might be the chances of getting a "rare" item, but that's hard to datamine because of the issue mentioned above about how I wasn't clear what the "HQ" column meant, so I don't know how reliable the data is for that :(
I suppose the next thing to do is to analyze overall sector ratings with stats, or performance, or weather. I just don't know where to start there - there are just so many variables!
I changed the title of the sector unlock cell to be general notes about the run. In addition to unlocks, it would be nice to have the trip times if you know them so I can quickly map out the speed/distance/time formula. I'm curious about it.

I read through nearly every page and while much is said about sector 8, can someone confirm the following:
We've found sector 7, What I don't know is if we have to "only" travel to sector 7 and no where else in order to unlock 8?
My FC and I have all enterprise parts on hour ship, are rank 27 and have visiting sector 7 every stink'n day :( I just can't understand being stuck only going to 7 and would love to know if this is indeed the correct path to unlock 8.

Definitely not. Our ship, the Drunken Mammet, found sector 8 after sector 7 on an SC06->SC07 trip. So it doesn't have to be a solo trip. It's just luck. :(
I suggest mammet-bashing. Complain loudly about your mammet in the company workshop. Try to find an artist to do a sketch of a mammet and threaten to burn a copy every time the mammet doesn't find the sector you're looking for. Rename your airship to shame your mammet.

Unlocked all my sectors with favor/exploration/retrieval builds so far and failed with spread stat build.
I had returned to my hulk build after failing multiple times finding sector 8 with full invincible , last trip if found sector 8 with my hulk build, ship returned today with this result:

Looking JUST at the Survey stat, here's the number of attempts vs successes at different survey values to find sector 08 recorded on the spreadsheet:
Adrasteia: Success: 98
Drunken Mammet: Fails: 80; Success: 80
Enterprise A: Fails: 80, 80
HMS Moneysink: Success: 90
Lalafell Mafia: Fails: 94, 94, 94, 94; Success: 76
Ragnarok: Fails: 98, 98; Success: 98
SS Flying Squirrel: Fails: 80, 80, 80
SS Rubber Ducky: Fails: 76, 62; Success: 80
The Phoenix: Fails: 80, 80, 80; Success: 80
So, that's what we have so far. With 80 Survey, the chance to find Sector 08 so far for us (and this is a tiny sample size) is 3/12 = 25%. Now, again, this is a tiny sample, but the chance to succeed with 90-100 Survey? We have 6 fails recorded and 3 successes. 3/9 gives us 33%. Below 80 we only have 3 trips recorded, 1 success and 2 fails, which gives us 33% there too. This is all skewed by small sample sizes, but the 25-33% chance is pretty consistent so far across all survey values. Our total of 7/24 gives us ~30%, and 33% isn't even appreciably better than that.

You are right, sample size is to small for a good analysis, the mafia screws up the results completely.... curse the mafia.
I hope more people will participate and enter their results which would help us to confirm theories.

Just confirming that S12 unlocked after S10
In regards to the durability of airship parts, I allowed our airship to completely degrade and was given the following error when I tried to deploy it 'broken'.
"Unable to commence voyage. One or more components require repairs."
It appears that if the condition of any one component fails, the entire ship cannot be deployed. I would further speculate that the condition of any one component has no effect on the quantity or quality of the items returned similar to the condition of our armor and weapons.

That is... Your sector discoveries and company crafting logs are tied to the estate hall's workshop, and not the Free Company itself. These are not carried over when you destroy the workshop and move. This is a little counter intuitive because you'd think knowledge is immaterial, like known sectors and recipes, you think you would keep that with you as you move, but nope.
- Extra unlocked airship slots are lost
- Airship rank is reset upon dismantling, but parts are recovered in inventory
- Sector discoveries are lost
- Unlocked workshop prototypes are lost and need to be unlocked again
On the bright side, we already had a lot of leftover items for unlocking the prototypes again, and we know know how to unlock second airship again, so we can rush towards that.
Rank 23 still haven't found sector 7 & 8 yet! Somehow discovered sector 11 which requires rank 30 to explore...
Sector 10 unlocks Sector 12.
Finally found sector 08 with all invincible parts. It was an A rating trip at rank 27 trip from SC07 to SC06. Will add info to log shortly.
Off to a find a 2nd airship!
Note: Just for the sake of speed I changed back to the bronco aftcastle to increase our speed rating a little; we will see if I can get myself locked out of that 2nd airship yet :D

I finally discovered sector 8 myself. It was a sector 7 only trip, performance rated as abysmal. Of course, my airship is rank 29 with two enterprise and two invincible parts, so I imagine there might've been some overgearing. If that matters in discovering sectors.
Hopefully I'll have that second airship tomorrow.
I really like this idea and I think it is worth exploring! Here are some additional suggestions:
- Take some screenshots of your FC in the workshop but have everyone stand in front of the mammet so he isn't in the shot
- Within hearing range, wonder out loud why mammets are in charge of airships when it seems like moogles could do a better job
- Let your airship parts reach a dangerously low repair condition and give your mammet a solemn salute before sending the airship out

I've updated the sector map on the OP with a disclaimer that we aren't sure whether it helps at all. I know i've said it several places in the guide but the uncertainty really can't be overstated XD

Today's expedition for the Lufenia to sector 8 yielded our second airship. Also it unlocked sector 9. Also it brought Lufenia up to rank 30. Also got 14 HQ raw celestine.
Talk about a turn-around from our former fortune. Easy come, easy go.
