How would identify a female player guy/girl?

Voice chat exists . Skype or T3.

Though I knew a guy that was so into trying to be a girl online he found voice modulation software to make him sound like a girl over Skype and t3, I assume most won't go to those lengths. Otherwise video chat Skype with them.

I know a few people, one being one of my best friends, who found his fiance in game, and they live together now rl.

There's many people here that wouldn't mind finding someone, I think because we as gamers are much more similar and comfortable with each other than we are IRL trying to find someone.

Do I feel it's wrong to try and identify someone by their avatar? No. Do I feel it's wrong to stereotype and trope players into categories? Yes. I do think there's a fine line between harassment and curiosity, which the OP is treading.

Wondering how many guys missed out on awesome games like Tomb Raider and Metroid because they have no choice but to play as female. You know how many games don't give you an option to be anything other than male? As a female if I had such a problem with my own identity that I couldn't play the opposite gender in a video game, I wouldn't have played very many video games. But guess what: it's a video game! Fantasy! As someone pointed out, we throw fire balls and ride horse sized birds. If you can suspend your disbelief to enjoy that, then you should be able to not let the gender be an issue. It's part of the fantasy.

Just... what? All of the men that I know that play female characters are open about it. They aren't playing a female character to deceive anyone into thinking they're girls. That does happen, yes, but it's not exactly the norm. I've run across maybe half a dozen men that do that in the entire time that I've been on the internet (around 20 years now). They're playing one because they want to. Who the hell died and gave you the right to tell people what gender their avatar on an online game should be? Why do you even care?

I'm a guy who always plays female toons. I've been called weird and gay for it. Idc. And, no, I wouldn't give two shits if the person I bonded with is also a guy. It's a video game lol. I think you'd have to be kind of homophobic to even think about that in this context.

To answer OP, it's hard to explain but it's all about experiences and understanding women. The more you hang out around them, the more you get to see the real differences even they are butch type.

You may want to reread what I said. For a refresher, this is what I said:

"In my experience, there tends to be a 50-50 split on whether a female will play as male or female."

So female gamers that I personally know tend to be a 50-50 split, not 50% of all female gamers play men. You didn't correct anything. You just threw your ego around.

Numbers from my own FC; 4 confirmed as female and identify as female gender and speak in Mumble or teamspeak 3. 2 play male characters (myself and a male Miqo'te). The other two play female miqo'te. By your numbers I should have 0 females but I get 50%.

My static has 3 female players. 2 play as female characters and 1 plays as male (myself). I get 33% If you wanted to know how the males play... Of the male players (5), 2 play male and 3 play a female character. So... where's your correction again?

Edit for more of YMMV: Outside of that, off the top of my head I count 8 other females. 3 play as male characters. 38%

So 14 female players. 5 out 14. Hey it's not 50% but it's definitely not 5-10%

No insecurity? So you agree with him that men must play male characters or they're not normal? Do you agree that players need to get some sort of sexual satisfaction to justify playing opposite genders? Do you go out of your way to flirt with every female toon in game? Do you then continue to do so trying to figure out their irl gender?

If we had to conform to him everyone would be a hyur or lala (unless midgets aren't normal to him either). Cat people aren't "normal". Elves aren't "normal". The upcoming Au'Ra race isn't "normal".

And if the response to the above is "that's not the kind of normal he's referring to" then why should the lines be drawn to his point and then be ignored for every other point? Why are we playing video games? None of the things happening in our fantasy MMO are "normal".

In any case, there is no clear way to distinguish between male and female across the board, if all you have is text. I have some male friends whose chat habits make them appear female or androgynous, and some female friends who cussed like truckers and were very confrontational and happy to get into arguments. The whole "guys are aggressive, girls like to get along with everyone" doesn't work.

If you really want to know, ask them. If they don't want to tell, assume they don't fit your sexual preference and leave it at that.

I'm a male and I prefer to play female characters as well. Usually they have superior customization options (my opinion) and while it does get old, I've been asked by a lot of players if I'm a girl or guy. I always answer it honestly because I'd rather not run the risk of being stalked or bothered by random players on a regular basis. In the end I agree with a lot of posters here, it doesn't really matter what gender you play as. There's a lot more pressing matters in game to worry about than trying to figure out the person behind the character.

To whoever said it's "Rare for females to play male characters", you'd be veeerrry wrong. MANY females play male characters, either for RP reasons, or to keep "hidden" from weirdos that want to hit on them. I no longer play female characters because I don't want that kind fo attention, and MOST of the male characters i know in my Free Company and Linkshells are actually women irl. We also have a large number of men who play female characters.

Heard about that one as well. My (RL) wife will periodically have her character jump around while saying (out loud, not in game) "I'm a guy! I'm a guy! I'm a guy!" Our previous FC leader (woman in RL) played a male character and would hop around more than I do. So that study may not be a great indicator either.

My characters tend to be in far less revealing clothing than my wife's do. As one lodestoner (Hi Vheo!) put it: "VIVA LA SKIMP!" It depends on the personality of the player, not their gender.

This game seems to have a really high percentage of females that play male characters, at least in my personal experience. I think it's because this game offers a lot of "bishie" male options instead of the usual MMO fare. I know when I was a male character, I gave him kind of a young, pretty face. That's not to say that I myself won't play a more muscular male (in fact, I'm planning on being a male Au Ra) but many women (again, in my personal experience) seem to be put off by it and would much rather play a male that's not a hulking pile of testosterone.

It honestly depends how someone presents themselves. Some are obvious and some are not. Honestly it's best just to assume everyone is a male. 5% of the time you will be wrong lol. Some people take this a bit too seriously. Real life and video games don't mix very well. Who cares what you are irl. Have fun and make friends.

It's funny how we're all Gamers and get a negative stigma from Non-gamers yet we feel the need to segregate ourselves further by dividing each other into a stupid category such as who plays a gender they aren't in rl. Well, My wife works in IT, and I'm a nurse. So ya we both not in normal gender historical roles.

Possible. If I wasn't attached to the male lalafell sprite I've got I would've had a male highlander. I might've gone male Au Ra. Though I don't mind FemRoe or female highlander, I've preferred male miqo'te as well. So of all the possible "characters" I could be I've got 4 males vs 2 females.
