Extended battle queue (XIII modified) gets my vote, that's for sure. The gameplay needs to become snappier, but that should happen regardless of what happens to the basic attacks.

Holly crap is Betel giving into a form of automated attack... j/k j/k
If we are able to cue up skills to fire off in succession. How do you propose a Con or a Thu who have 3 attack skills cued then things take a turn for the worse and now they have to wait for 3 skills to fire off before they can toss a cure?
Is there some sort of override?
What about conditional skills like Feint and Shield Bash?
Yes, cancle would break the current queue.
Only attacks would be set to queue, Light slash, light stab, heavy slash, heavy stab, red lotus (using GLA as an example)
If you needed to use attacks such as shield bash, second wind, feint (that's a counterattack right?) they would be injected into the current queue and be executed after the attack in progress.
Basic attack are far too important to get rid of. A traditional auto-attack is just really pointless, we have a system that is better (it takes away the pointless attacking) we should just work to improve this.
Seriously we need to get rid of TP, it would be better if basic attacks were used to open up for weaponskills, raising the acc and damage of actions used later in the chain.
Sorta like staggering the enemy first.
Depends on brain power. FF14 as a game doesn't have that many chances left to improve. Is there a solution? probably, is auto-attack a more convenient solution, yep.
It's what works in practice as oppose to what might work practice.
It's like trying to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes you succeed, somethings you realize you're in debt with nothing to show for it.
But what is the point of auto-attack anyway? To generate TP and do deal more damage?
If that's the case, they will just scale up Mob's HP.
Guild Wars 2 has no auto-attack, TERA has no auto-attack, and I'm sure nobody says those game's battle systems are a step backwards for MMOs. FFXI is a step backwards in my mind, as is WoW.
that's exactly what I would like to know o.O
Right now you can gain full TP with 3 hits (don't tell you want the auto-attack for those 3 hits coz it's really lame) and weapon skills do more damage, so, I really can't see why people are asking so badly for auto-attack...
You can have it do any number of things.. generate TP, interrupt the monster with a critical hit, etc. But it's also important for maintaining a realistic pace of battle.
Is auto attack a necessity? Certainly not. It's just one possibility that many believe would work better than the current TP-generating system. It would also allow SE to add a delay component to weapons, and have your TP generation based on your attack speed vs damage output. Sometimes I find it funny that a marauder with a giant axe can continually attack just as fast as gladiator with a dagger. But that's just my own opinion.
I hate to say it, but people need to remember that a switch to an auto attack system would involve many other balances, essentially giving the entire TP system a makeover.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm of the thought that the TP system is rather silly in a lot of ways.
Some people don't like to fix what's not broken. But others have a hard time seeing what's so great about the current battle mechanics.
Yeah...
In my opinion we don't need auto-attack to fix the combat and the combat at the moment isn't fine either. Auto-attack is just a quick bandaid fix to the current system, and scarcely solves anything.
Even auto-attack wouldnt fix the current system.
The whole system needs an overhaul. If they intend to just keep the current system, then sure, throw in an auto-attack and balance accordingly. But that's barely an improvement.
