There's a reason why Jump Force was in the running for best fighting game of the year, when Power Rangers Battle for the Grid is a 10xxxxxxxx better game.

There's a reason why Call of Duty Mobile won mobile game of the year over Sayonara Wild Hearts.

and obviously there's a reason why Fortnite won best ongoing game over XIV.

Those three points baby.

You only need to look at IGN and the other online reviews to understand who to really trust for your actual GOTY reviews. Because at the end of the day the VGAS are about who has money, and who's gonna make money.

Its like when WoW was the big thing. At almost no point in its life was it actually the best gameplay experience, but people who didnt play video games played WoW.

Fortnite is that, twentyfold. It makes more money than most genres make. It makes more annually than the top 3 premium games combined. Its closest competitor sits at ~60% of the total yearly revenue.


I dont enjoy the game at all, but purely in what it brings the games industry (for good and bad), its not going to walk away from any industry award show with nothing.


It was nice to see FE3H win best strategy game though. As someone who plays mostly MMO's and strategy games, its rare that anything we're actually excited about is even mentioned in passing.

14 is an MMO that is not THE MMO. Congrats, it is in someones shadow. Thats how the MMO genre works to everyone who doesnt play MMO's and a whole bunch that do. Been like that since EQ launched and it was Ultima Online who? And since WoW launched, its been WoW.

Love how they say its because its "niche" or not a lot of ppl play it when disco elysium walked away with 4 awards. That alone trashes their entire argument. A game doesn't have to massively popular to earn recognition. Luckily most other awards did seem fairly distributed.

Yeah....FFXIV not even being nominated for the music category is straight up heresy and to add more salt to the wound it lost to Fortnite for best ongoing game when it hasn't even been out half as long as FFXIV has....Ugh.

Well just because its still running doesnt make it a great ongoing game. FFXIV, seen from the outside, is INCREDIBLY stale in its content. It does the same content rotation, with only random sub-systems added in that fail to catch on, for several years now. While the conservative playerbase might enjoy knowing exactly whats going to come with which patch number, this looks really bad from the outside.
