Need or Greed? A Question of Etiquette.

I don't roll Need on any piece of gear that isn't a personal upgrade. If it's for glamour/seals then I greed it. I personally find needing on anything that isn't an upgrade (not counting things like minions/mounts) to be in extremely poor taste.

Now part of this is because of how long I played WoW, back when I played a big part of the games culture was that rolling on need for anything other than the current specialization you were is frowned upon. So playing for years with that mentality really stuck with me.

I'll only roll need if its well...something I actually need. If something is an automatic upgrade, then I'll roll need. Cards and such, if I don't have it then yes I'll need roll on them. If I have something already or I have no use for it upgrade wise. Then I'll automatically pass. For glamor items I'll typically pass since I'm not fond of this games glamor system and I really don't want extra items floating around in my inventory.

Happened in some raid (don't remember which) two of same items for brd came out (first time I saw that, 'tho), and I were the only brd in party. Needed the first, passed the second.

Usually will greed or even pass if I see sprouts. And switch to need when I see someone playing need game.

Glamour, desynthesis, seals, ilevel - I don't consider any of these possible uses for gear to be "more important" than any other, and a player is under no obligation to pass up the opportunity to Need lot if they desire the item, whatever they desire it for. I fully support the right of folks to Need lot whatever they want to, unless an agreement has been struck beforehand for them not to.

That said, I personally tend to just Greed lot if all I need is Grand Company Seals, but that's because I'm at the point now where Grand Company Seals don't have much value for me. But that's just for now - if those seals were important again (say, if they were required for a step in the new Relic weapon), I'd totally be Need lotting them.

If the ilvl of the item is higher than the one on the gear I'm currently wearing, I'll need. That's it. In other cases the gear just goes to recycling, so its type is irrelevant and IMHO fair game for the whole party. GC seals are currency -> greed.

This means I'm either greeding or passing for the vast majority of the time. It also means I get less loot than the average dungeon runner. I've decided not to cry about it, it's only my alts that might "suffer" from not getting drops because someone else needs.

Minions, crafting mats etc? Item by item basis.

I need if it's an upgrade, if it's a piece I've been farming forever for glam, or in 24-man raids because it's the standard to need/greed everything in them and that's how everyone else will be rolling (unless there's someone who tells me they're there for specific gear upgrades).

If other party members point out that the items are an upgrade, then yeah, you are kind of a dick for not letting them have it. Otherwise though...no, you are not "part of the problem with humanity these days."

IMO, you roll Need on a piece of gear when your 'ability to need' and the 'action' you are intending to perform on said gear, are identically exclusive.

For example, if you are a BLM intending take an 'equip' action on a piece of gear that you have the option of needed because you are a BLM. You should need, because both the 'equip' action and 'need' option are job/class restricted in the same way.

If you want to just turn the gear in for seals (something any class/job can do)... do a greed roll. You don't need the gear more than anyone else in your party. You couldn't have gotten that ability to roll on that drop at all without your party. Let them have a chance.

Role NEED if you "need" it doesn't matter the reason all is personal..
Role GREED if you just want to make GIL out of it...

Screw that. When Dun Scaith came out I, like many others, were already in gear that was better than what dropped there. I'm not going to lose out on the ability to glamour the healer sets from there just because I put in work and upgraded my gear before the instance was available.
