People giving up is definitely one of the problems in new content (i.e. within 3 months of it becoming available), not being able to take replacements is the final blow. I've even had a party that could consistently down the heart, then the off-tank (warrior) quits, and then a DD quits, then a healer, then 2 DDs and that was it.
I don't really know why primal fights prohibit replacements. Perhaps it was to force people to stick with a party. But that is not consistent with the design of DF. DF is a efficiency machine. It is all about efficiency. But it's replacement policies are anything but efficient. For example, no replacements in primal fights, and then there's making in-progress matching an opt-in.
If it really was about efficiency, it should have allowed replacements in primal fights, and make in-progress matching an inherent default (first timers get new instances obviously). That would have be the most efficient.
Perhaps what it really is about, is the efficiency on the server of making matches, not the efficiency for players. In that case the current design is understandable.
