Final Fantasy is the thing that makes people cry when they implement jump.
I've watched that at least 5 times before and it still brings all the warm and fuzzies that keep me with the series.
Yeah, the format of Final Fantasy XIII seems to be entirely reactionary to FFXII's "lack of" success: A heavy focus on a closed story and its characters as opposed to an overarching war drama and the players who get caught in the middle, and a very linear path with a dedicated battle screen as opposed to open areas and combat somewhat reminiscent of an MMO.
As for why people disliked FFXII? The only thing I can think of is that a lot of the fanbase can't stand stories designed for MEN with MANLY characters such as Balthier and Basch, and would rather traipse around as an effeminate Meg Ryan wearing lederhosen or worship a bleach haired momma's boy of a villain with a sword whose size clearly betrays his own compensation issues.
Don't even get me started on Seymour. Seriously? You named your villian after a Simpsons gag?
(I should mention here by the way that I enjoyed FFVII & X, and FFXIII is in my top 5 as far as the series goes.)

Thanks for posting that link. As someone who has been with the series from the NES release of FF1, It brought back a lot of memories.

Unfortunately, it seems that some of the suggestions on the forums come from people who might not be very familiar with the series and don't realize how their ideas - though good for other games - are a bad fit for the Final Fantasy franchise.
I highly recommend that everyone here watch that video, veterans and new players alike.
Ummm you do realize Vaan is in Final Fantasy XII right?

He hardly counts as Matsuno didn't even want him in there in the first place. Vaan only exists due to SE corporate and marketing having their way once Matsuno was released from the project. In short, he was SE's attempt at pandering to the demographic I mentioned.
Of course as I implied, most of that post was in jest anyway.
This is an awesome topic. Really summed up what FF as a whole really is. Also, listening to that soundtrack that was posted, someone should make a post asking the devs to reorganize where certain songs are heard. I'm listening to the OST right now and only one of the songs I've heard is a song I've heard while playing in-game. I really hope they disperse the songs better later on. :X
I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I got shivers when Episode XIII mentioned the language roots of the name Vivi being "to live".
Regardless of whether that's the real motivation for that name or not I think it's a nice way of looking at it considering the character.
