Yes, I wouldn't say I am great at anything but healing (and arguably not even "great" at that, lol), but I have managed to avoid making a complete fool of myself so far. :)
Not strictly Duty Finder, but I joined a farm party for Susano Ex as SMN last night in hopes of maybe finally getting a dog. While we did get in about a dozen kills and no wipes, we had some pretty nasty close calls. Now admittedly, I hadn't touched the fight in about half a year, so it took me a few runs to re-acclimate to the timings and such (and had one very ill-timed lightning lockdown, causing me to be stuck on the edge of the rift in the middle during the last phase and slowly sink to my death, Titanic style...). Despite that, it seemed like all but a couple people were just flat out ignoring mechanics and causing trouble. We had a bard that died numerous times to the first Rasen Kaikyo AoEs and the following dice mechanic afterwards. Maybe two or three people actually bothered to run to the opposite side of the rift during the non-locked lighting marker mechanic, which threw me off a bit. The other time I died, I somehow didn't get healed enough during the sword phase, despite being packed with the majority of the party and not eating orbs, causing me to not have enough health to live through the ult (I don't recall having any debuffs at this time, either). As an oddity, the second sword drop was always intercepted by the NIN for... reasons? I know current gear really trivializes the fight, but yikes was that whole thing messy. I did not get my dog, but for my troubles I at least got a couple of the crafting items.
Alt Stone Vigil, encountered a DRK in some level 30-34 tank gear and some level 30-32 disciple of war, and even mage gear. Yes, mage gear.
So long as a full pack of mobs was alive, I needed either A) Largesse Cure spam B) Presence of Mind Cure spam or C) Cure II spam to keep this guy alive. Yeesh. Was playing decently though, CDs definitely happened.
And no Refreshes from the Bard either.
Can we get the page count to 2019 to make it current?
Not really. I find this thread is more just for random anecdotes. Sometimes I read them and agree with the poster, sometimes I read them and agree with the people the poster is trying to call out. Most of the time I read them and just shrug the same way I do when seeing articles on a grocery store checkout stand magazine cover about some Celebrity being secretly married to Elvis' clone. A kind of 'meh' mixed with 'huh' mixed with 'that was an odd thing to get worked up about' and finally spiced with 'well, that was an entertaining yet pointless read I managed to amuse myself with'.
This thread is really the 'daytime TV talk show' of FFXIV than anything actually useful.
Oddly enough; it's more entertaining to see the things people get worked up about that I could care less over than to see the ones I actually do have a care over.
Just got out of a Deltascape 1N with a healer who had Shire accessories. How.
Oh, and she died and then DC'd twice. Was she getting killed so hard it knocked her out of the game?
Almost wiped to third boss of rabanastre during dark geas. Some reason 2 people stood on top of one geas and didnt activate it so like 3/4 of the raid died at least. I mention to next time to touch them and not stand on them and of course I get the snob response of "You ever hear of being bound?"
Well yeah I have heard of people being bound. I've also heard of not all 24 people being bound at the same time and by the time I realized something was wrong I couldn't find where it was. It blended in with people standing around. I hear learning from one's mistakes is more productive than giving people an attitude.

I dont know what to say else xD ( This is in Brayflox, level 32 dungeon )
Edit : The guy that told me that was a returner with not a single level 70 character.
Some random things while leveling this guy;
Zone into POD, there's a silver chest near by and it's a trap then there's a landmine nearby and we wipe a few seconds after loading in. I just stared at the screen and laughed.
Kept getting asked to use Esuna before I learned the spell, they didn't listen when I said that I didn't learn it yet. I had to go into my abilites to make 100% sure because they were very stubborn that I had it.
Had a really squish tank in Satasha, it was my first time healing a dungeon (Yay anxiety) during the last boss no one was clicking to stop the adds from spawning, I couldn't since I literally could not take my finger of the cure cast since his health was going down that fast and since the dps was on the low side a lot of them spawned! Somehow managed to keep the tank alive do to elixers. Got no commendations :(
The group was really friendly, so I wasn't too bothered, just had to take a break for a while to catch my breath.
Take a guess which EX primal did I get yesterday on mentor roullette?
Not the usual ARR primals like titan, ultima or garuda, not even ravanna or bismarck from HW.........FREAKIN NIDHOGG EX
Needless to say the timer ran out and we couldn't kill it in the middle of burger kings leaving at the first sight of the dragon and the many....many wipes.
Btw I wanna ask about the tethers for this fight cuz something happened to me on this that never occured in all my prior Nidhogg EX runs
......is it possible that if someone tethered to Red/Blue pillars to swap their tether with u if u die?Cuz I got tethered to the red pillar at first but then a few seconds later I got tethered to the blue one in the middle of the stack marker and my red tether dissapeared before the red pillar even got killed
Sadly, yes, never turned grit on. I do main tank with my other account, i do raid with, but i still do use tank stance for trashs mobs, only taking it off usually with warrior after having the aggro for i can decimate for exemple. But telling me that i dont know how to play because i dont have " the legend " title, from someone that doesnt turn on tank stance on a level 32 dungeon, i just dont get it. Only good thing is that he left after some pulls.
Oh, yes, I main tank as well, and I have never pulled a pack of trash without tank stance either. My impression is that they just wanted to shut you down with that comment, which was incredibly silly of them. So according to them, only a very small minority of the game can tell you "hey, turn tank stance on", when it's basically common sense? It baffles me. But I'm getting used to meet crazy and immature people throwing tantrums every now and then in this game.
A few pages ago I posted up that I got my SCH to 60 and was loving it. Today I was brought back down to Earth...
Or down to Eorzea…
Which ever way you wanna look at it anyway.
I've been doing Sirensong non-stop since getting my SCH to 61. Since doing the roulettes and 60 dungeons drops a tonne of tomes, I managed to complete my set of iLvl 260 gear (minus the Codex and a ring, themselves being iLvl 255) and I queue up for Sirensong once more.
Load in and its a WAR, NIN and BRD. No new message pops up so I'm thinking that this will be a quick and easy Sirensong run.
Boy was I wrong.
To note, everyone has a mix of classes to 70, so we are all experienced.
The tank almost dies to the first set of mobs that spawn when you're still on the ship. Now I'm not a great SCH, I would definitely say that I am still learning the class entirely. However, I know if I am hitting you with 2 Lustrates and your health barely moves, something is wrong.
After getting through those two waves, we get the 2 sets of mobs that you burn through before the first boss. The tank pulls everything and I continually cast my healing spells. After getting them to full health, I run in and use Miasma II on the mobs and the tank's health DROPS like a stone and they die. We're pretty close to the spawn point, so I just call it a wipe and we can start again.
The tank apologizes in the chat. The only thing they'll say for the entire run.
We get to the first set of mobs again and just as I start healing the tank, my controller dies. *panic stations*
Luckily I have 2 extra controllers on hand but they die before I can get the 2nd controller turned on and get a Lustrate out on them. I heal the NIN and BRD until the WAR respawns and I say what happened in the chat and say sorry also.
We get through each individual set of mobs and make our way through the boss room and onto the second stage of mobs. It's only at this stage that I notice that the tank's full HP is only at around 28k. About 9-14k less than the tanks that I've been healing all night in Sirensong.
Its between pulls of the mobs and the 2nd boss that I take a look at the tank's gear.
Now this is someone who has DRK and PLD to 70, their WAR was 62. This was their gear. (Numbers are the iLvl of each piece)
https://imgur.com/CdA5YOM.jpg
Putting this sort of level gear on my DRK gives them an iLvl of 192. IN SIRENSONG. This means that this tank would not have been able to queue for Sohr Khai, Xelphatol or Baelsar's Wall because of their average item level.
I don't want to get into the debate of item level restrictions in casual content. In fact, I am more in favour of against iLvl restrictions in casual content... but this just made my little healer heart cry a little.
Admittedly, they did get a piece of gear during the dungeon (a bracelet) and equipped it during the run. But that meant that their iLvl for that piece went from 255 to 260.
There was another wipe just after the 2nd boss where the tank and everyone else charged up ahead and attacked the mobs when my MP wasn't even 1/3rd regained from the previous fight. That pull was always going to be a wipe.
The final boss was a bit of a laugh out loud moment when the tank got almost instantly destroyed by the auto attack from the boss. The one time I didn't throw an Adlo onto the tank after the boss cast virgin tears, their health went down to 3k and then 0.
I have no idea if they were using cooldowns because I was trying so hard to focus on my MP and their health that I couldn't look at anything else besides mechanics.
Just a part of the Sirensong journey...
*cries in healer*
--edit: Just noticed as well... the rings are Slaying rings, not Fending. That further grinds my gears >.<
Tanks like this are the reason why forums are filled with "tank without tank stance should get 10000% damage penalty"-threads these days. Sub-lv56 DRK has so incredibly bad AoE damage unlike WAR and mitigation unlike PLD it's just plain stupid to pull everything without Grit just because. Even PLD has better AoE for a while after they get Total Eclipse. Only thing DRK excels at in ARR content is single target damage because DRK's damage became pretty frontloaded after SB changes but that barely warms during trash pulls.
Pog 50 potency AoE! Big damage!
But unless you have The Legend title he ain't listening. Because the Legend title holders are the only people worth listening to.
Ego and pride dominate gaming these days when it comes to MMO. Tanking has such simplistic role and people just will not pay attention to mechanics of a job. I love tanking but I'm not the best at it. There's always room for improvement. I make it a habit to take all criticism(good, bad, and indifferent) to improve play experience for myself and everyone participating. Definitely should be using tank stances that s what they are there for.
BTW legendary status and level have nothing to do with correct mechanics.
I KNOW, RIGHT?!
Personally, I didn't even realise that I got rid of my shire gear from my WHM. So when I went to find it as my SCH was 59, I bought my left side and ended up getting the entire right side in about 2 hours of dungeons.
It's not hard at all.
So I healed Doma Castle as a WHM with teammates with..."questionable" performance.
First lemme ask you a question: Imagine this. You pull a pack of 6 mobs and you have a full lvl 65 gear. You get hit hard but your healer does a good job. In order to help him what do you do?
A) Don't drop Tank Stance
B) Use CDs
C) Don't stand in every aoe
D) Do the contrary of A, B and C
If you've answered D congratulations, you're the tank I just healed tonight. Add to that that both DPS also loved to stand in aoe and ignore stack markers and towers.
To say that I was internally screaming is an understatement
Any weapon is an axe if you swing it hard enough.
I've about had it up to here with people. just PEOPLE.
I'm stressed enough tanking. I'm not bad at it. I know DRK well and enjoy playing it more than i ever did any other. I honestly don't give a fuck about naysayers. I'm just a barrel of nerves whenever i tank because i feel like people just fucking watching and judging my every move. so it doesn't help when people don't want to a co-operate!!
MCH, Why the hells are you using blank in your rot!? It does NO DAMAGE. all you're doing is scattering mobs and making it more annoying for MDPS and I. If you're going to keep knocking things out of unleash i'll just assume you want to tank it and let it gnaw on you!
WHM you have only 3 damage skills for a reason! why am i bleeding out when it is specifically your job to stop me from bleeding out!?
So my tank problems are continuing from my SCH lvl progression over the last few pages.
I got a tank in Shisui with a level 18 crafting ring on who used no role action cooldowns at all and continued to sprint ahead of the party and pull when I'm half a dungeon back somehwat restoring my MP. Red Mage also never used Mana Shift and barely did any DPS.
This was followed straight after that by one of my best runs in Shisui feat 3 new people from Goblin. They all listened to mechanics of the fight, used cooldowns appropriately and even used refresh when my MP was getting low.
Funny how when people want to speed run a dungeon, it can end up taking more time than a dungeon where you just have fun and get some banter in along the way.
Some people just need to be reminded that this is a game and we're here to have fun ❤️
Some people needs a reminder that yes this is indeed a video game.
I know that people just wanna get their tomes and loot as quickly as they can but if they're too lazy to use basic skills of their class or too stingy to spend some tomes and gills on a decent gear or worse not equipping their job crystals(i met a dozen of those on my AST's runs and it's infuriating, most of which weren't even new players), then they have no right to lash at the rest of the party for their own incompetence
And even if they were properly geared,u still meet people new to the dungeon who'd need an explanation for a few mechs for the bosses, cuz turbo pulling with a player who just played the instance for the first time is gonna make things longer rather than making it shorter
patience is a virtue after all,a virtue that half the playerbase of this game don't have sadly especially the burger king variety if u know what i mean xD
I agree with you guys. I have 51 level and still learn how to be a decent tank, but I always remember to repair my gear before clearing dungeons and get the best armor I can get. I don't know the game good enough to judge other players, but I don't mind if somebody isn't a pro, even if we wipe.
/comfort
I had a mch the other day while leveling mnk that kept using Blank. I kindly pointed out that it did nothing but infuriate the rest of the party, and was best used as a kiting tool only. He insisted it did damage when the in-game log showed no damage.
The replacement mch we got was much nicer.
