Somehow, I don't think that will be enough to save this game...

They need to implement reporting tools as well, so that RMT spammers can be reported and kicked off, so that they no longer consume a valuable slot. Until then they should seriously consider draining all servers every five or six hours to try to purge them. Because right now on Goblin there are about 50 within the first three city states alone, and they're preventing even the queue from working properly (it seems that once the queue gets somewhere around 80 it just starts dumping players to the 1017 error).
for the love of god PLEASE!
Almost two hours spamming "0" key to try and get into the Q
Sad thats how I spend my time in FFXIV rather than playing... Not a complaint, just utter disappointment
yeah but what would stop a player from jamming a coin between their space bar and alt button to keep their char AFK-jumping?
I love how they consider a basic "stop clogging our servers for no reason" mechanic as "drastic measures." Half an hour is a more than reasonable time to kick someone off for being AFK. Even if there was more than enough room for everyone to play simultaneously I dont see anything wrong with force kicking someone off the game if they are not actually playing it.
Agreed one guy on server been afk for nearly 72 hours not moved an inch is a major p**s take! It doesnt need to be perm just temp till they increase slots, havent been able to play since early access launch getting ticked off now
As for people being able to auto run etc to avoid WoW and other games got around this problem with pattern detection or some crap like that where if you ran in a straight line and havent done anything else for a certain amount of time you got kicked
They refer to it as a "placebo solution", despite the fact that it's an elegant and reasonable solution. Right now people that paid and invested time in a character can't play, despite legions of people being AFK all day. There isn't even a guarantee a person could find an open slot on another server. This is really unfortunate, SE's server/production team is really showing their naivete and lack of experience here.
p.s v3.0 here we come......
200 login attempts and counting :). Lets call it the login Olympics. I'm so totally considering writing a script that will handle all the login clicking for me lol.
Yes, that's the happy medium we should be striving for here. Even if Square thinks it's akin to the "Close Door" button on an elevator, implementing one would not only alleviate some of the congestion, but it would also make a lot of people very happy. I don't even think it has to be a heavy-fisted action. Your half-hour suggestion is reasonable; an hour would be downright generous. That would be a great place to start. Like many have said before me, there's no benefit to these stagnant characters. They contribute nothing to the community but headaches and rage-broken controllers and keyboards.
I disagree with a afk timer especially at 20-30mins.. thats to low ppl paying for the game will get even more upset when sitting around waiting for a duty to finally que up which has recently been taking upwards of a hr+ and poof o u have been kicked for inactivity? GTFO i would be steemed as hell
I think if your standing around doing nothing qued for nothing what so ever. Just standing around a 20 or 30 min timer is fine. If you go that long without any direct input you should loose your spot.
ALL I WANT is to PLAY...
Its my BDAY have the day OFF and i cant do the one thing i been looking forward to do, all week... Play all day :(
i WANT to PLAY

Major issues lie within server inadequacies, not people that goes afk.
I'm not justifying the people that goes afk. But we shouldn't entirely blame the players when SE is so comically shortsighted.
What choice do the players have when they know they won't be able to login without half an hour of attempt, at night after coming home from work?
That makes no sense. How can implementing an AFK timeout be "drastic"? So, Log in restrictions and stopping character creations and stopping digital sales of the game are not? It would make sense to try the simpler fixes first like trying for the AFK timeout before the servers to see if it helps.
WOW has one and they are very successful and I've never heard anyone complain about it.
I think staying logged in while you are at work and school is selfish and inconsiderate. The entitlement attitude of people who think they should just be able to do whatever is ridiculous.
well ppl will just find a way around that to if they want by laying contorller down to run in circles ect ect but like i said when im waiting on a main quest dungeon to finally que up and sit here and read the forums (as i am now) or go grab a sandwich or wtvr knowing that its messed up to think i would get booted during that time is horrible and will make allot of people angry sorry i just dont see it ... personally i dont have problems logging in as i am not dumb enough to log in during "primetime" i simply log in before or after ... never been stuck in a que longer then a few mins never had a problem really other then the initial servers down.. anyhow i am all for kicking ppl who are sleeping or wtvr but 30 mins is to low unless u make it so they are doing absolutly nothing including that they arent in a que but lets face it those who want to get around it will and they pay for the game so hey wtvr
depends on the duty and no not for a half hr.. and i normally dont just leave especially not for a half hr.. but i'll turn on the tv and keep an eye on it or browse forums and keep eye on it waitint gofr it to pop... i mean the dungeons take the longest and usually ur in the middle of nowhere lol
Here's the thing.. WoW has a timer and no one resorts to something that ludicrous just to stay logged in. It's not a problem and no one complains about it. If anyone is complaining here and disagreeing with it now, it's because they're using the AFK route to abuse the system. While it's nice that we were updated, SE takes the 'wait and see' approach to how their adjustments are being made, in the meantime they are losing people by the minute. They should have implemented this already, even if it is only labeled as a TEMPORARY solution. They know that there are players abusing the situation, and yet do nothing about it regardless of the masses of angry, upset customers. Which does nothing but make them angrier and less likely to stick with the game.
It just doesn't make sense to me.
Seriously, the AFK limit should have been the first thing put in to place before even buying new servers. And players should be a little more considerate than to stay permanently logged in and preventing everyone else from going in. I tried making a character in several worlds but none are ever open at any time. I haven't played this game once since launch. They need to limit the time a player can be AFK or limit the time length people can be in game until the new servers are up so everyone can get a chance to play. This is just ridiculous right now.
I mean it won't even let me queue up and wait, just "Sorry buddy, you can't play. Try later." Yoshi made a nice apology but still, this was poorly handled.
While playing near drybone yesterday I noticed an AFK character standing in the fields. I log in over 24 hours later and that same character is AFKing in the same spot. What the hell.. How is it fair that people like this can waste server space while someone that could actually be playing gets denied access?
First solution should be the kicking of afk players. Its the most immediate problem.
They are never going to implement an AFK boot because people PAY for this game.....I do not nor do I think anyone else has the right to try and tell me how and when to play the game I paid for. If FTP games want to implement that fine, because people are NOT paying for those.
I'm all for AFK kickers as well, but I sort of doubt it would solve the big problem. It might not even have much of an effect at all.
Every server is optimized/intended to support about 5k simultaneous connections; but, as that's spread around a large area and not everyone plays simultaneously, SE allows 20k+ people to sign up for each server. In some cases, like 28k+.
So, if you have 5k people on the server, and 2k are AFK at any one time, and you have 2-3k people trying to get in simultaneously when the servers are full... there are still going to be wait times and queues. I think if they put in an AFK kicker and people still couldn't log in, it would look pretty bad.
That being the case, I still want one, because A)it makes sense, and B) f' those guys who sit there all day and take up space!
Edited:
This is idiotic, they absolutely do have the right to do this - they control the servers, you don't, read the ToS. Many if not most MMOs have AFK kickers. And what more, they aren't telling you HOW to play, they are telling you to log off if you're NOT playing!!!Quote:

Selfish kids just, kill me.
AFK kick go, and also please, don't insult us by asking us to 'wait until an opening is available' while having no server status on the login page - a simple counter like '5000/5000' refreshing every 10 minutes, so instead of spamming the heck out of numpad 0 we can see when it drops below capacity and then attempt a login.
This is a ridiculous statement, you have no idea what you're talking about. Have you never played an MMO before? Many PAY TO PLAY games have an auto-afk system that kicks after 30-60 mins of inactivity (i.e. WOW, Star Wars when it was P2P etc.).
The queue system dictates when you can play. There are no botting rules, isn't that something that tells you how to play? This isn't even an issue of rights so don't overreact and drag that into this. This is an issue of playing well with others as much as it is a server capacity issue.
In MMOs with auto-afk, you don't see people going in circles or using other weird methods, even if the queues for dungeons are long. People are making up scenarios that have not been proven in the many years that MMOs have been around
They'll implement one in the future, but the statement that they aren't focusing on that will only encourage people to continue idling when they aren't playing.
And what about the people who can't get on because servers are full? They PAY for the game as well.
An AFK timer would be useful, so long as it automatically activates during periods of congestion so people don't get kicked during phases when there are still spaces. The biggest issue though is what contributes as an acceptable period of being AFK. I'd personally say an hour - long enough for a dinner break or emergency shopping trip, but short enough to weed out those who are staying logged in purely to reserve a place on the server.
hey in case you have not noticed we ALL PAID FOR THE GAME, and yes they can tell you how to play it because THEY OWN IT NOT YOU. you are a clear example of the people the other 99% of us wish would stop playing mmo's you give everyone a bad name. You must live in a very special world away from others, I feel sad for you. I cant imagine being so out of touch with the rest of the human race.
Might as well give up. Yoshida already stated that they're focusing on solving the actual issue so everyone can play whether they're idle or not... exactly what should be the resolution in the first place.
Yet another fail. Shaking my head at this game is actually a compliment. May all the people who afk while sleeping or while at work get a good dose of gamer karma in the form of a cactus up the rectum.
So instead of getting rid of afk'ers that will solve some of the current massive loads on the servers, ur going to make more afkers be able to just sit there?
Great plan! No wait, that will just make more people angry and people lag like hell when they try to render the 100+ afk derps in each main town.
AFKers are in EVERY SINGLE MMO. Did you expect there to not be a single one in this one? Really SE !?
