If you don't like the MSQ then this isn't the game for you.
Shadowbringers and Endwalker have been handsdown the best story in any MMO I have ever played. No other MMO can even come near it.
HW still spanks every other expac fite me irl.
i think there is a difference between disliking the msq and disliking Aspects of it. For me, i do like the overall story of Endwalker, but there are parts that i feel were weak and i didnt like the resolution around Zodiark or Hydealyn for different reasons. But if I mention my reasons i often get accused of hating on the MSQ, which is far from the truth. I just dont think some of the things that happened were done well.
I think there is the clincher though for those who do fully dislike the MSQ. Its fine to dislike, but if they are going t go around saying its trash, then im sorry but they are only going to bring ire on themselves. If they say they dislike it, and thats that, i dont think anyone should hate on them. But people are strangely defensive of the things they like, myself included.
I'm not disliking the MSQ but sometimes i get bored and annoyed by the Alisaie / Alphinaud duo as well as Tataru. Even tho they kind of work like Puck in Berserk, they bring a bit of an optimist side to the story or else it might be depressing all around. I'd still like SE to commit to full grit / dark fantasy world / story for once and see how far they allow themselves to go. It might not be in FFXIV medium / format.
While it looks like a more mature / adult take with FFXIV feel, I don't even think FF16 will even touch that humanity despair, darkness and horror depth still. Seems like no one has the will to fully commit to it to it's bad end and chaotic world in flames and war ineluctable conclusion. I see in the writing and scenes, the will and the means to go further. But censored and kept back by "familly friendly all around this is an mmorpg for everyone yay let's allways make happy endings".
It would need a title they would be allowed to experiment and take risks. They used to take risks with more obscure games like Einhander, Erhgeiz (nier could be also one of theses) and many other side titles of their own. Not games they delegate to other studios, but their own.
The other day I used a power pass in Lost Ark, and I felt like the way they approached this would be a decent way for new (or boosted) players in this game. Since the overarching story is over in Endwalker, and now it's a good new starting point. New players have to go through hundreds of hours of story - even if they skip through dialogue. In the future this will become more and more of a problem for players trying to get to more up to date content.
What that game did was have a narrator explain to your character (including select cutscenes) the major story events preceding their place in the story after a boost. Completely optional, with rewards available to encourage the player to actually do this. At the end of the story summary, players are placed in a training room where they can learn further features of the game and combat - which also includes more rewards as encouragement to do it.
this is the og thread
How about just accepting that:
1) Your opinion is minority (gasp!)
2) Part of the majority, not all of them, will react somewhat hostile if you criticize what they like.
3) Learn to listen to who gives your valid and constructive responses, vs ignore who just go for personal attacks. Sometimes, people mix those approaches together.
4) Understand that you will not be able to convince everyone about your stand. This is not Age of Empire where you can just wo lo lo people into your side by talking.
5) Stop trying to tell people on Internet being nice. They don't and they won't, simple. The anonymous environment make people likely more aggressive.
I get someone not liking the story or MSQ, but you don’t need to voice it just like you saying we don’t need to offer a rebuttal.
What is the point of complaining to us about the story are we supposed to magically change it for you?
I dont really care if people like the MSQ or not. If story isnt your thing and you just like to raid, sure skipp through it as much as you want.
But nothing riles me up more than a cutscene skipper who will then turn around and say the story is rubbish or comment on the validity of a character or say there isnt any content.
If you skip, thats a choice you can make. But if you then turn around and say the story is shit, im sorry but as far as im concerned you have zero credibility. Its like saying a book is rubbish without reading the book. How on earth can you have an opinion if you havent engagegd with the content?
Well considering the devs themselves have stated they look to feedback on social media for the story, it’s good for people to give criticism and feedback to all aspects of the game, including the story. I don’t see why you’re basically telling people to shut up about it. The same can be applied to people praising the story in that case.
i didnt care for msq but i didnt hate it either
what i hated was the literal hours upon hours of move from point a to point b, read dialogue, move to point c, cutscene into another cutscene, move literally 15 yards away, dialogue again, back to point a, turn in quest.
and all the literal wasted time in between dialogue boxes where the camera has to inform us of every character involved nodding their head
I don’t understand why people say this. Most rpg’s i’ve played, at least FF wise, have a lot of cutscenes yes, but there is also a LOOOOOT of gameplay between said cutscenes. Whereas with 14 it’s, here’s 4-5 cutscenes, here’s a random mob to fight, here’s a 12 min dungeon, now go back to another 2-3 hours of talking.
It's ok to not like the story, not every media will be for everyone. What people rightfully have a problem with, is people who skip the msq and then complain about it. You can't know if you don't like it if you haven't experienced it. I've seen multiple times people that skip the msq because they don't like it (?) then replay the story on an alt or on new game + at some point, and suddenly they realize they love it.
The story is not the primary driver for me in this game, endgame play is.
I think the story can be tropey and cliche but it’s not the worst story to exist and it tugs the heartstrings well enough in same places.
tbh ppl need to grow up about stuff in general
someone doesn't like something? who cares. literally doesn't affect you? then shut up.
even the majority of people who talk about the story have the literary analysis skills of kindergartners, and get rage-baby pissed off if you like x or y character 90% of the time. or thought x/y scene was well done/badly handled, or if you criticize some portrayals, etc...
or like, somehow manage to miss metaphors the size of the sun.
even ppl who say "story bad" who didn't play it, again, who cares? like 99% of the time it's some rando in NN, not a person who's considered to have actual credibility that can actually influence opinion in some way. it's like when i say "marvel movies are kind of shit" and some rando i don't know decides to inform me that they're... idk, the best thing since sliced bread (they're shit).
end of the day whether someone likes the story or not is meaningless nonsense that doesn't actually matter much. if you care to have a discussion, then just ask "why do you dislike it?" and 90% of the time it's usually because ARR's pretty slow and a bit dry, or it's just "going to npc to npc to read the story a paragraph at a time kind of sucks." like, you'll find that people tend to have a reason. you don't need to jump down their throat over it.
and yeah, ppl who don't like the story might like and enjoy other aspects of the game. the story doesn't solely carry the title. for instance, i play xiv since i enjoy the raiding more than what the competition offered. i like some of the aesthetics a little more (mostly, i like that i can play more feminine male characters since they're just what i /like/ and most games don't really have that).
no point in like... attacking someone over it. have a discussion, sure, but if you're gettin emotional and actin out pls don't type/talk; no one wants to hear it.
Endwalker MSQ sucks lmao, most bits are boring and pointless. Stormblood and Heavenswards were better.
People are allowed to like or dislike whatever they want. But... when you go on tirades about how much you dislike something and your reason for disliking it is either:
1) You misunderstood the entire thing.
2) You filled in the blanks that were left ambiguous with a ridiculous chain of events that make no sense and then used that nonsense that you yourself concocted as justification for disliking the rest of the story.
... at that point you probably just need to shut up about it. Because the problem's you, not it.
Genocide Mommy Venat was the highlight of EW tbh.
I did not skip the MSQ/cutscenes my first playthrough, I still disliked the story for EW in particular because of things they did to a group of characters I truly liked that the reasoning for those actions did not fully make sense when it could have been prevented.
I don't think anyone would have objection with you disliking the story then. At least nobody I've met.
You didn't agree with their decisions, so you didn't enjoy it. That's perfectly reasonable.
There have certainly been many cases where I've felt that way about a show, game, or book.
I think it's hilarious. Just makes people look silly when they do that, since everything's subjective anyway. If I say I thought EW was a convoluted mess but the person next to me loves every minute of it, we just agree to disagree. But some people in this great community btw just can't stand it if someone isn't praising every single thing about the game because their lord and savior yoshi p once saved a really crappy game and turned it into what they now consider their identity lmao couldn't be me. What's that? The only way I can't like the story is if I didn't understand it or skipped some cutscenes? Oh noooo.
Anyway.
aaaand this is exactly what i pointed out in this very thread. People using the "you just misunderstand it" excuse. Listen, 14's story isnt some algebraic expression. It's not some complicated super deep story. Considering with at least this expansion the devs felt the need to have very specific questions for things that werent explained in the story...id say the problem isnt anyone, but that the story is the problem.
I love a good story and what I have seen of the MSQ has been very good. Yes I have skipped a lot of cut scenes some just don't make sense to me. Besides I pay to play not watch mini movies, I pay netflix for that. I don't care what other people think, why would I, It's my money that's paying the sub not anyone elses. Pay my sub I'll watch cut scenes, well I'll walk away from the computer while they play or read the forums or something, how would you know. I don't need to know the story by heart to push 2232451 over and over again to kill something. It's like someone saying this is a mmo you have to group, no I don't, I'm doing most things with the trusts, It effects others in no way what so ever. I could not care less about grouping up with people, they just ruin stuff anyway.
I love seeing a certain group malding severely while others are enjoying the content they are given, even with all its flaws.
This thread is reminding me why I post less and less lately.
Honestly, I wonder at all the Venat worshippers sometimes.
