I feel this pain. I seriously have been wanting a bob like 2B’s for forever and when I saw it wasn’t for viera I really had an “I’ve had enough! Pass me the fantasia!” moment. Ultimately I ended up throwing the hair at my alt instead. :P

No, don't take it personally. This is very much inline with how I talk about these races because much of the disconnect players have with understanding the "why" is that people don't generally try to think like the devs or look at things from their pov. Not that I'm some authority on big game design, but I do know a thing or 2 about it and like to get people to think deeper about what they're upset about if they decide to be that invested in it.

Many answers as to why the devs do what they do can be found in looking at patterns throughout the game.

I stand by "a certain type of player plays viera that’s why they’re all so whiny" because that's like 80% of the player base. I know not everyone is like me and would be fine playing a furry female with 0 hair options "so long as I like em" or only cares about 2-3 hats and can rock the same short hairstyle for a year, people in this game overwhelmingly prefer to play dress up with their cute/ attractive things and that includes hair.

There's not a bone in my body that thinks Viera players are unique in that way and that Middies or lalas or Cat girls would take not being able to "fully play dress-up with hats and having like only 8 hairstyles" any better. This is SE's fault for not realizing many people wanted Viera because they're the most well known attractive non-human FF race, so they ended up making something with very lacking dress up potential in the most important part of the body in a game with 0 body shape customization. They are the ones who decided to make a pair of limited races after all instead of doing the compromises they would have to to make them compatible with the game's current systems.

That being said, they have explicitly and repeatedly confirmed and reassured people of their plans for these races which many ignore. I'm not at all a fan of willful ignorance for the sake of a pity party.

These things are not mutually exclusive.
I look into how the devs go about things because it's fascinating to me as the thing I want most in this game (Female Hrothgar) is held prisoner to the work flow process of these devs. To me, if I'm going to be that invested in wanting something then I'm going to try to understand it over yelling at clouds about it.

In doing so, I find that many "don't get it".

For example, I'm fairly sure I know "why" the devs decided to only give Viera unique hairstyles. I'm also sure I know "why" the devs added Hrothgar. And everywhere I look I see people taking their own hot takes at face value with very lil critical thought or research on it, so you get endless circles of people throwing blame every which way for not getting the things they want.

You seem to put far too much stock into someone's ava.
I wouldn't expect you to creep through my post and know my long history of wanting Viera in this game starting back as far as Arr times, that would be silly. But it's very silly to read someone's intent a certain way because of the race of their ava. If Viera had an emotional range beyond "Shrugs" I'd be playing one RIGHT NOW and still be telling people that making "countless threads isn't going to get your hair faster/ accept that they're not giving you hats and shared hairs or play something else".
I may think that the race it's self is a waste of potential and "if that's what they're going to do then they shoulda just made a full Hrothgar race", but I don't think poorly of people who PLAY the race.

I have however posted on these forums long enough and visit enough other communities for this game to know that this forum has become little more than a cis pool of complaining about every lil thing in this game with zero desire for critical thinking ... so if I'm poop talking to anyone it's the general culture of the OF at this point.

IIRC when a reporter recently asked YP flat out about Viera and Hrothgar head stuff (in a question about new genders and races) he strongly implied people should look forward to May fan-fest about the head stuff.

So I'm assuming you will hear something there.

That could mean something, but it could also mean nothing. Of course he's going to want as many people as possible tuning in for Fanfest, whether there's any news on this to share or not. Either way, I think it would be foolish for anyone to get their hopes up too high, which usually happens anyway with other things.

If I remember correctly: when people asked about Male viera after Hroth and Fem viera were revealed a month before, he told them "Look forward to fanfest"...somewhere along that line, which effectively built an insane amount of hype, only to say "We're not doing this because the costs are too high" which...uhh...crashed and burned hard afterwards.

Now, one can say, that was just the players' own misinterpretation of his words, but he also could have come along to deny it at anytime which probably wouldn't have made that LL a literal crapstorm. Instead, he let the players theorize and build hype for over a month just before coming in like a WREEEEEECKING BAAAAAAAALLLL and absolutely obliterating something that players really really wanted. So, after that stunt, Im kind of skeptical about getting my hopes up that something regarding hroth and viera customization being revealed during Fanfest or that LL

What more is there to say? At this point modders have effectively jury-rigged a solutions to a problem that Square has officially and unofficially refused to even acknowledge for two years now. But modding is bad, right guys?

Say what you will about the quality of the work, but it's pretty jarring when you see that.. eeeh.. I'd say +85% of all helms in the game looks just fine on Viera/Hrothgar after just checking a box in the metadata of the helm. There are some helms, at least for Viera, that are very tight to the head and cause a situation where the ears float above the top of the helm; but I'd say that's about 10% of all helms at most. (Examples off the top of my head are the Judge helms from Bozja) Honestly, it feels like most of the issue was just making Viera hair compatible for helms, which a couple of separate modders have tackled. Creating versions that pad down the hair when a helm is showing.

Now, Square never said to expect helms, but it would be nice to have an explanation as to why it is such an impossibility yet people in their free time are solving the problem. What I WILL hold Square accountable for, though, is absolutely no new hairstyles for either race all expansion and not a freaking peep about it either. We were promised more hairstyles and even the wording during that statement was nebulous enough to wonder if he meant old purchasable hairstyles would be included. But no, nada, nothing. Not one iota of a comment on Viera or Hrothgar.

Because modders aren't restricted by milestones, deadlines or a boss that directly tells you what you can and can't work on, or has to review your work each time you submit something and can tell you to do it again or veto your work entirely to start over.

Square could no doubt easily fix the Viera/hrothgar helm situation, if they wanted to sacrifice an entire patch's worth of content to do so. The issue comes from the fact that every patch, there's literally hundreds to thousands of brand new models being made with each major patch, and in some cases, entirely brand new zones filled to the brim with assets. A modder can easily make a helmet fit a Viera or make one of the old hairstyles work for Hroth/viera. Ask them to do that along with making a 50 other models in a 3-month window (all of which -have- to be done as a priority over the Viera hair) and they have to submit their work to a master 3D modeler who has very particular standards or they get rejected. it'd be a much different story then.

The only point I'd agree is that they could have made the new hairstyles & helmets working on Viera & Hroth since it wasn't a case of old stuff having to be updated, but new stuff that was being created from scratch anyway. It's never been an issue of money, it's been an issue of workload & time they don't have in their short patch windows. Viera and Hrothgar only got glasses/light headpieces in time for SHB because the 3D modders spent countless man hours of their own free time to do so. That alone should be telling of how tight their workload is. From the very onset of SHB, I called they wouldn't get any updates until 6.0 at the earliest. past history has shown countless times how tight their dev windows are, so its easy to know when to expect something is on the backburner or not if its not mandatory to a major patch release.

My only guess on why they haven't even done new stuff is because they just want to do a blanket all at once release, lest they get even more complaints from people going "but why that helmet and not this one? Why that hair and not this one?".

There is no correlation here. Giving Viera and Hrothgar hats will not cost a patch worth of content; or to use the meme, "Cost a Raid Tier". (Besides, Square is already doing that themselves with the lack of Beast Tribe capstone among others, but that's a different thread)

And to make clear, the big Viera hats mod out there currently, the person who made that simply went into the metadata of each existing hat and simple clicked a checkbox to turn the hat on, that's it. They didn't do any adjusting of any existing assets. Yes, not every helm and hat looks good like that, but the lion's share certainly does.

I mean, sure, I'll bite. Going by your example I guess that could mean he reveals a dozen new hairstyles for every race but Hrothgar and Viera and then go "haha, never gonna happen!". That would be a strange joke given that he's said many a time they're working on hair for these races, asking people to wait for them.

Edit- As for the hat stuff again for the convo going on up there ... no, it's not hard to make hat-hair models. They do that for every version of every hairstyle they release for normal races. And yes, you can just check a box and let them show on the tech side. The reason they don't do it isn't because they're "lazy" or "bad" or "can't do what modders can for some reason". If it's that easy then the only reason can be that they don't want to do that solution because of design reasons like "they think it looks bad" and in order to make it look satisfactory they would have to devote an amount of effort that they don't have to expend for other races.

So the options for Viera are ...
-Make hat-hair, let them ears clip.
-Turn off ears, make the race look like tall, earless humans when they wear hats and some helms.
-Come up with a solution that isn't one of those that also works for all 4 ear types.
-Don't show the types of headgear that give you these problems.
(or prehaps there's some tech reason why the clip option isn't viable, I do remember YP saying how the reason all Hrothgar tail tips are black is that they legit ran outta allocated memory for them or something)

For Hrothgar I have no clue, they just seem to really want "The MANE" to be preserved or something unless it's a hood/ helm that covers it completely, IDK what YP was thinking when he told the devs to not give them reg hair either.

To say that male viera and viera hairstyles are in the same arena of "Yoshi P said look forward to it" is disingenuous. They flat out said that the trade-off to not having head pieces and normal hair was unique hairstyles, and that more were in the wings. He danced around the question of male viera because he could not say no (corporate culture differences). Viera hair was talked about in the live letter.

I expect something in May, at the least.

So now that we're "even", there is some possibility that they might get more hairstyles, either in a batch or along everyone else, starting with 6.0.


We know that they are very capable to release a new race in a short amount of time, if the priority is set accordingly. You could argue that there wasn't much time to make things work for Viera but Hrothgar was of "their own making"... and they have more limitations, though most likely because the priorities were set like this. It really isn't rocket science to make a hair work for another race, but they can probably only whip out so many of them at a time.

Yeah, this is more along the lines of how I see things.

The reason we get so few hairstyles in general is because hairstyles are used as incentives for doing content. I've played a number of MMOs, this one likes to drip feed us hair but tie it to content whereas others like GW2 and PSO2 use it as incentive to pay more.
They give us 2 for free when an expansion drops, but that's it. Every new hairstyle is linked to some kinda content to get you to play the new stuff, or you have to get it from someone who played the new stuff ... and sometimes it comes from the Mog-station. This expac we have had 11 hairstyles if you count the datamined 1 that's yet to be released (I'm guessing we're getting a 12th when they put Cat Boi outfit on the Mog-station) so my guess is that when ever they reveal the hair for these races it will be around a dozen, but that's a pure guess.

Then there's the topic of "how do you release hair that's only for 1 race". Given that they likely don't want to release an item in game that's sellable on the MB that unlocks hair for only 1 race ... that's an interesting pickle. Even more confusing for Hrothgar, given they gave different foreheads and ear shapes to each head which makes manes not match easily without tweaks (Hrothgar basically don't have hair, their stuff is all CC O_o). So it could shake out that they wouldn't ever release 1 Hrothgar mane without manes for other faces if they decide to not design manes all faces can have.

All in all I think they may make a Mog-Station item that unlocks a bundle of hair for them at the end of the expac (that says in no uncertain terms that these ONLY work for these races) or simply add them for free as a feature in 6.0.

That's no excuse from excluding them from new content releases. If they are going to do so well then exclusive hairstyles would have to be the replacement. It's simply unfair to give all the other races new things constantly and nothing to Viera or Hrothgar.

I am sorry I giggled a little...I mean this with no snark, but when have you EVER seen anything for FREE on the mog-station...they charge anywhere from 2-15$ for emotes that could have been free and tied to events.

Seriously though, do you know how pissed off people would be if they did put a race exclusive hair pack on the mog station and charged players for it when the rest of the player base get hair styles for free just for as you stated playing the content? It would literarily cause more of an uproar than you see here.

I didn't say they would be free on the Mog-Station, I would fully expect them to charge like $25 for a bundle of 12 or w/e hairs so that people could hash out that it would be "$2 a style, not bad!". That OR they add them to the game for free as a feature fore 6.0 like how we got the WoD hair and 1 long hair for free at the start of ShB.

And ... Hrothgar already have to pay for any hairstyle change they want to do. Nothing about these races is "fair" tbh.

I'm pretty sure new viera hair will be slapped onto other hair tickets. It's the most elegant solution, really. It will be interesting to see if they would be retroactive with it, like putting a short viera hairstyle on something like form and function.


I also don't mean these hair styles edited for Viera (I actually don't want that. I want the unique Viera hair which was oddly a huge selling point for me), but their own styles that loosely relate to others.

Yesterday someone asked me what hair I was using....for the first time since vieras came out I actually got to tell someone it was a race hairstyle that only vieras could wear...it felt weird.

This is something that frustrates me about these two very different races being bundled together as a package deal currently. Interview questions are rarely asked about just viera or just hrothgar, and aside from the initial “viera will get some legacy hairstyles” he has never addressed them individually when talking about issues. But they have different issues, which will likely require different solutions, so I’d like to hear just a little more on this.

For Hrothgar it makes sense they wouldn’t get legacy hair because their head shape is, indeed, very different. With viera, I don’t see a reason we wouldn’t be able to get most of the legacy hairstyles fitted to us other than lack of time...but it seems like it would take way more time to design a bunch of racial hairs from scratch. Yeah, it definitely sounds like they're needless complicating things for very little gain if this is how they intend to go about it.

Aside from the different head shape on Hrothgar he specifically told them to make them as beastly and different as they could with what's available without regard for legacy hairstyles, as (some of) those would not fit whatever image they want to project with Hrothgar.

Viera is Viera and being largely humanoid there's no particular reason they can't style their hair in whatever way they want without losing their 'identity'.

Maybe it's unlikely, but after reading both statements it's possible that certain legacy hairstyles for Viera are still on the table, while the race-specific hair is for Hrothgar.

Everyone right now is 'This time, things will be different.' about the fanfest in May, so sure that this time, the heavens will open up and hairstyles for Viera will rain down and adorn each sad Viera that had been waiting for it for so long. Me? I think you may need to temper your expectations.

In May it will have been close to exactly 2 years, I think most people's expectations are well and truly tempered.

I think many are more so hopeful rather than expectant and look to May as a sort of last chance before they jump ship and well and truly give up on these races though.

Right? People who actually play the races are pretty jaded about the subject at this point. Most of this thread isn’t even like “can’t wait for fanfest ^o^ we’re gonna get everything we want!” and more “hey devs can we have like a crumb of info on where this is at thaaanks”.

I'm pretty big on in-game fashion and I won't buy sets that don't have hair or headpieces I can use. While I understand not going back and redoing all the old headgear to fit us, I figured we would be a consideration moving forward in content. This past Valentines Day was probably the first time since ARR launched that I skipped a holiday event. Excluding a portion of the player base is not a good business model. I still hold out hope they will eventually address this and move forward with us included in future things.
