And I was saying how OOC shouts annoy me too, what's the point?
I don't think anyone is asking for anything special here, especially not me in the OP. An RP server is common in MMOs these days. >_>

Blacklist is your friend in both instances.
Yes I understood what you said, Foxbat. You were talking about courtesy in public areas and how some RPers shout or speak where it's crowded, and that annoys you... it's not that hard to figure it out.
I don't think you absorbed anything from what I told you though. Do you also tell non-RPers to keep their conversations to themselves, mind the chatter in camps, not to use shout, troll them if they do? Because if so, while I wouldn't agree with you entirely, I'd commend you for being consistent.
If not, then you have double-standards. If you're inconsiderate of RPers being in-character who are annoyed by out of character chatter in public areas, don't expect them to bend the knee to accommodate your specific preferences of public conversation.
If you don't have to think twice to /say at a camp site at the crystal, why should I?
I know this may be a foreign notion, but as a third alternative you could also try asking politely if they might either take their in-character conversation elsewhere, or otherwise utilize more private channels such as /p or /t. While a small few might take offense at this, I have found that the vast majority are pleasant individuals who are not trying to upset anyone's gameplay and would be glad to oblige the request so long as they were addressed in a respectful manner. Conversely, I think it's fair to say that a lot of people (not just RPers) would just blacklist your disruptive gibberish and continue doing what they're doing.Quote:
also, i dont tell them to shut up or anything, i troll the hell out of them in game when they do it in public, i know how hard it is for RPists to ignore what people are saying and they just have to read it soitalklikethisandidoitinsuchawayastowhereiamactualytalkingtothemandgivethemaheadacheandmakethemmovesomewhereelse
I know it's ever so slightly off topic, but... why have people taken to calling Role Players, RPists. Wouldn't the RPist be a person who persecutes roleplayers based on their existance?
Like a sexist, or a racist?
I mean, come on, it's not like you call Gamers, Gamists. And that would be really awkward for Racers. wouldn't you say?
The term probably was created like all terms are, without visible rhyme or reason. Truth to be told i'm a BIT bugged by it because it's just one 'a' letter away from something REALLY bad and as hilarious as it is, actually because it is so hilarious, it makes reading phrases with that term a bit jarring. (not- trying to raise a stink here just commenting that whenever I see that phrase I have to stop and laugh and restart reading because god, it's so wrong)
Ah, no wonder it makes no sense.
SE, save me...
While not an RPer, I don't begrudge anyone chatting and using the emotes and chats. I'm baffled that people would actually make statements like the one below.
The nerve of them, using the normal chat features and emotes, what do they think this is, some kind of massive multiplayer role playing game? As some have pointed out people can fill the chats, and the shouts with obscenity riddled soliloquies, /pose and do repeated miquo'te stretches (which makes quite an emote sound) in an attempt to be offensive or to mimic PDA, talk about politics, sports, sex, whatever for hours. God forbid someone have fun and tell a fantasy story as a group.
I know you RPers seem to want to have your own server, but I for one think it would be a tragedy if all the imagination and fun of an exciting group of people were lost to one place and not allowed to be shared with multiple people.
I would not be upset if Besaid and Rabanastre were merged, good luck to you all regardless.
(All this + what ^^^^ this guy said.)
Unofficial RP servers are in the best interest of the community.
The RP community is stagnant. The same few groups, are doing the same couple of things the do every night. (try to take ov- anyways..) You have tavern RP, kidnappings, training and preparing for the Garlean invasion, harems/dating RP, and Amnesia. It's old. This is why I think it would be best for the servers to make up a mix of everyone, regardless of their stance on RP.
Let's face it. On RP, love it, hate it, but admit that you love to hate it and hate to love it. RPers get bored with the same IC shells being reclusive and not interacting with other RPers on a large scope. If not for the mixed population of both sides, then it would be a very lonely server.
Being ostracized by raging peni who have only ever learned how to discriminate and condemn people who are different to them for whatever depressing family history they have is fun. Admit it. You may not like it, but the conversations and drama that springs up between the 2 communities is effective at getting attention, and never shy of flare. Plus, people like thevedis, who trolllololol, well they get /blisted, and then the only damage they can do, is to their reputation. (Well you could also /emote motion over and over and over and over, until they leave. But just remember that you can get banned for that, and people have.)
Another thing to note. Lots of RPers are not terrible gamers. They are in it for the dynamic collaboration of writing literature. I don't do it to get my epeen off. I am not my character. He is himself, and things he says and does are ever so slightly influenced by my personal experiences, but not entirely. I can disagree with Ceres.
RPing isn't the only thing we do, we take breaks. Pretty similar to how people run Iffy/Moggle 18 times one night, and then take a break from it.
RPers are gamers first. We need to be able to just drop out of character and hang out with friends, or whomever, and get stuff done.
Dreke >> ((and not like this)) but like this.
If we were segregated, it would be exactly like it is on Besaid now. Haters openly berating any RP that goes on(sometimes completely justified because some kids are retarded, just saiyan.) and RPers keeping to themselves and not branching out.
Clearly you all need to play a game like .Hack or watch the anime to see what RPing is all about.
It's not mere chatting or emotes. It's taking on a character role and being part of the world. People who just randomly shout chat and emote like crazy clearly are not true RPers.
In a game world absent of NPCs the RPers fill the void and expand the lore and game world.
Honestly I hope the trolling never ends. Why? This thread would have never picked up and gone as far as it had with out those who troll. It has caused this thread to pick up steam and thrive, which gives us our best hope of gaining Dev or Mod attention(which I sort of think is a lost cause by this point as Yoshi has released his revised plan for server merge and I doubt we'll see anything else on it).
As for the REASON? I dun know...Haters gonna hate?
I'm willing to just blame it on this community as a whole. I hate to say it but this community is not the nicest nor the most co operative. I mean not the FFXIV community but the FFXIV Lodestone community. You post here that an apple is a fruit and you'll have fifty people screaming bloody murder on you for it. Just the way it is. The opinions expressed by the few members of a few Besaid Link Shells here does NOT reflect the opinions of Besaid as a whole. The RP community and the rest of Besaid get along just fine with little to NO problem at all. Thevedis and Brigander are of a slim minority.

I liked your post by the way. Not trying to troll it or anything.
That just sounds like Light RP to me, which would be perfectly fine on an RP server. In fact that whole post confuses the hell out of me because it's so contradictory and all over the place. This isn't the tread to argue about the goings on in the Besaid RP community currently, but if you brought that up to support your point that unofficial RP server is the way to go, then it seems you're complaining about the way RP is, on the type of server you yourself deem as ideal. The rest of the post seems to be misguided, based on the premise that in an RP server you have to be IC all the time, or that there would be ONLY RPers playing, which was explained a dozen times by now that it would never be the case.Quote:

I picked Besaid because I liked FF10. It was the first FF I've played.
Little did I know that Besaid was intended to be the RP server for all these people.
I don't hate it. It's just really awkward to see people doing it. Can't they just do it inside a LS? I don't need to know that you're some mass murderer from a foreign land, nor do I need to know that you lust for a Miqo'te.

...Do I need to say more?
Please put a number on the server for RP so our linkshell can avoid that server :)
Pages upon pages of text spam in say is, in fact, rude. This is just your opinion toward that kind of thing going on during RP and that is valid! However, that just means that you tolerate that form of rudeness. This is why we have different chat channels. If it were truly RP, and they were having a personal conversation in character, they would do this in /tells.
If they intend to have it be heard so maybe another RP passerby can notice and join in. That's completely understandable and this may be normal for that type of play style. However, for people who are not involved in RP this is generally rude.
Let's not treat Vedis like they are being unkind or unreasonable as if they are annoyed at someone with a mental disability. These are other players, just like you and I, who feel that their play style in general don't hold the same standards. They are not "special" and shouldn't be treated as such.
I am certainly not anti RP, but the reaction to the OP throughout the pages of this thread show the opposite of why SE should designate an official RP server. Under these circumstances with low populations it would be unwise to name an RP server due to the strong opinions against the community and you'll have a big mess on your hands with a large amount of players on one server submitting applications to move servers. More so than if they didn't officially name one. It's insensitive and it's unfair to not recognize any community and not see them as valid, but for consolidation it does make more sense to acknowledge more general and larger regional specific communities.
Agreed.Quote:

I roleplay, and guess what is one of my biggest player-focused gripes in XIV? Trying to read through some text from an NPC and getting spammed to an all new 8th circle of hell by some inconsiderate RPers, awkwardly pretending to be badasses.
I really don't want a designated RP server, either. Just like paid, professional actors do not walk around in character 24/7, I find it really creepy when people expect other RPers to always be in character. I play XIV to hang out with friends and relax. Sometimes that means acting out stuff in character for fun, sometimes that means just being me. I support a healthy social server that is a mix of RPers and non-RPers who more or less all respect each other.
So, let's block all of /say channel to deal with it. That sounds reasonable. Also, let's not get defensive. I don't see any personal attacks thrown in that post. Maybe some should develop their character to go through a learning experience where they grow the f#$% up.
Easy way to solve this problem...
Designate an RP Server. Designate an RP Chat Channel within the server. Those who will follow the RP Chat those that don't won't bother. All is solved.
RPing doesn't mean spamming chat. It doesn't mean I'm gonna play a horny X, Y, Z character that only likes so and so. It's about taking on a ROLE of a fantasy character in a fantasy world.
I'd personally be an ole' fisherman seeking the king of fishes or a farmer...if you met me fishing by the water side...I'd reckon saying something like...
Them fish sure aren't biting today...or I can't wait to take these fishies home to my wife for a good hot meal.
When I felt like tanking and I met a damsel I might say my lady how may I serve you today?
People think that RPing is running around spamming like mad and it's truly not what RPing is about. I might have had a blast playing with a group of friends today. So I might relay the tale of conquest in a wild elaborate story for those around me to here. I might call to invite those that want to hear to gather...and weave a tale of wonder and intrigue.
I might have done an in-game event and discovered when the "comet" was ending our world...and I might relay that in a tale...I'd do it subtly I wouldn't spam it over and over again.
The essence of role play is to immerse yourself into the world. There are times RPers don't RP too..it's just another layer of game play.
With the change in plans regarding server merges (option #2), I think most would agree that this would be the most logical course of action:
Besaid + merge candidate = roleplay server
I honestly don't think there would be a population issue if they went this route. Of course there would be some people who apply to leave the server. I will guarantee that's going to happen anyway, since some people who greatly dislike RP have wanted to leave Besaid for a while and this is their first chance to transfer. But there will also be people who apply to transfer to Besaid, such as scattered RPers on other servers or people who just want to join the community.
Besaid has such a positive and tight-knit community. If you go to the world forums, you'll see that there was a movement to keep the Besaid community together through the merge, RPers and all (ironically enough, it was started by TheVedis). Roleplayers and non-roleplayers alike wanted to keep our community intact. SE officially acknowledging what the players have already decided by designating Besaid the roleplay server won't cause a mass exodus within the current community since it's already common knowledge (if only unofficial), and incoming players from the upcoming merge have a right to an informed decision. For current Besaid residents, I honestly don't see it changing a thing. But it will make it easier for other roleplayers and those who enjoy the atmosphere to find the RP hub (thus giving the RP community a chance to thrive) and won't surprise non-roleplayers who vehemently dislike that playstyle with unknowingly choosing our server.
Actually, it's called a blacklist. Which is where all the inconsiderate RPers I meet go to in my social lists. If they can't meet the rest of the server halfway in being a cooperative part of the community, rather than expecting us all to cater to them, then they aren't worth listening to in any way or form.
I loved your post, to be honest. Here's what I really wish would happen. Besaid continues to be the RP server, unofficial or official.
SE should create a /roleplay on flag. It should:
- Put a little symbol next to your name, separate from repair requests, bazaar, or linkshell. That way, you'd know who you would(n't) take offense to you walking up, waving, and introducing yourself.
- Allow other players to filter all non-linkshell, non-/tell communication from that player with a single chat filter ("In-character Chat Show/Hide")
- Allow the flagged players the option to filter all non-flagged communication ("Out-of-character Chat Show/Hide")
Then, some neat (optional) features that could stem from this idea later in development:
- Nearby NPCs might occasionally interact with flagged passers-by--saying hello, or starting a discussion about a mission they need you to complete.
- etc.
On second though, I doubt anyone actually reads this post anyway. >.> Not putting any more thought into it.
What do you mean doubt anybody reads it? That's a bloody brilliant idea o.O
My concern would be the likelihood of the developers implementing it. It'd be cheaper than setting up and maintaining a server (which they would probably have to do if they didn't follow this suggested thread's suggestion now, while there's opportunity) obviously, and have the benefit of being globally applicable - only reason we're asking all this now is because with the merge, it'd be an opportune label to add a label to one of them. And it wouldn't be without precedent; I'm pretty sure Everquest 2 has systems at least somewhat similar.
Concerns about likelihood of such a system being implemented aside, I certainly think if I had to choose between your suggestion and an officially-suggested RP server, I'd go with your suggestion.
Bruce, I appreciate you granting me the validity of opinion, I will do the same. A great many things that some find annoying others build filters in their minds for.
Having said that, is weird, imaginative, silly or pretend chat any more or less offensive than line after line of text with obscenities, people complaining about how much they hate some aspect of this game, talking about politics, shouting their 1/8 parties every twelve seconds for two hours, long /s conversations in another language, or any of the other nuisance chat?
If it is not, which most will admit is the case, why single a particular group out? I've watched and listened to my 12 year old make silly sounds for 10 minutes, tap his feet, and other very annoying things, then when his little five year old brother starts quietly singing a song from the next room he becomes incensed. I, quite frankly, think this is the same thing, its just a bullying mentality on a group that's different, on someone that is not you or like you.
Inconsiderate role players? What the hell man. So none role playing people spamming about random things, or abusing an emoticon are any different?
Or hey, lets take it up a notch, people shouting for groups or to sell items? They are inconsiderate spammers too, right?
You might have better luck with an offline game.
I don't even role play, I just respect their right to do it openly. Seriously, get your head out of your ass. If you don't like it, just black list them as you said. But to think of them as inconsiderate? My god.
it is
alot of us have no issues with RPists in general, but we take offense to them doing their full on sessions in the middle of the most populated parts of town just for the sake of making sure everyone can see what they are doing.
this is where we find them to be incosiderate, early on alot of them were pretty bad about this at the various camps too, broken water for example they would stand right on top of the crystal so everyone at camp could see them
after some trolling of them on some of our parts(you all know what i do lol) they moved just out of say range of the crystal, to where they were in camp, but not "in" the middle of camp so that everyone didnt have to watch what they were doing.
and yes, emote spamming by anyone and some of the nonsense spamming that goes on is in the same level as what i find RPists to be doing as inconsiderate.
as far as what some people are saying, taking it a step further to the stupidity level that no one should be allowed to use say or shout if they cant, is just retarded
people who have community conversations in shout/say are not the issue, those conversations are usualy short, and more of a passing by type deal, or just to keep people actively talking to each other
alot of what happens with the RPist community can be done in their own linkshell or in tells, but instead of doing that, they will take it to say or shout so that they have an audience
THAT is the problem when people are calling it inconsiderate and rude
While having a filterable /rp chat channel would probably resolve a lot of these problems - and I absolutely applaud the spirit of the concept - I'm not sure how practical this is from an administrative standpoint. If it operates just like /say, I'm sure a number of non-RPers would be inclined to make use of it for other purposes. And if it were only available for one server, I'm sure that would create additional issues as well.
Regardless of whether a RP server is designated or not, the problem of where the line is drawn between what's considered appropriate dialogue along public channels and what's considered inappropriate chat-spam is going to vary from player to player based upon their own individual preferences - and that doesn't just go for RPers either. Filters and blacklists are only going to go so far in being able to alleviate this for those people who find it distracting or annoying. On the other hand, role-players are paying the same rates to enjoy the game in their own way as well.
As I said in an earlier post, I firmly believe that the vast majority of us as RPers are polite and perfectly happy to take a public discussion to more private channels or another location if it becomes clear that someone is being bothered by it in some way, and respectfully asks us to do so. I think as long as people on both sides of the fence are respectful and tolerant of each other, there really shouldn't be any issue. It is a two-way street, and as RPers we don't know that we're bothering anyone unless we're told so. It seems fair to say that most of us just seek to peacefully coexist, but some sort of official acknowledgement or recognition that "Neo-Besaid" encompasses a large population of role-players would go a long way towards bringing more support to the existing RP community while allowing those that are offput by it to roam elsewhere.
As a footnote, there are certain instances where RP along more private channels is not always practical for us. RPers now exist and interact across a variety of linkshells, so once in awhile /say needs to be utilized. In every case I've been involved with something like this (and admittedly there haven't been many), I (and most I've known) have either tried to form a party if we're in a congested area or otherwise steer the group somewhere less crowded if forming a party isn't possible.
As a footnote to that footnote I feel I should also point out that public role-play has at times been a boon to the RP community. I know a handful of us "became" role-players after walking by some ongoing RP and becoming intrigued in what was going on (in spite of the stigma it's not all "bad dramatics"). In my experiences this has always happened in out-of-the-way areas where nobody normally congregates but people may run through to get elsewhere.
Here's a thought: Instead of trying to force people to use say for what you deem fit, why not use your party/linkshell/tell channels instead of your general one? Besaid was great when it started and you could see people role playing everywhere. I can't believe people would actually defend trolling them. It makes me sick. Live and let live man.
but i troll them in a way that could almost be considered roleplaying itself
so :P to you
its fun, and if they dont wanna deal with it they can take their own advice and move on somewhere else where they dont gotta hear me(which lets me not hear them either which solves the problem lol)
*In a dim lit room above the streets of Uldah*
Kyri walks in the room, dropping her pouch at the door, tired and flabbergasted at the sheer stupidity of some people. "Why.. Why did I ever decide to come to this drunken city.. in the middle of nowhere with nothing to see but sand and public acts of stupidity..." She sighs as she sits down, shaking the red dirt out of her shoe. Thinking over her two hours in the streets she is appalled by the lack of common sense that seems to have bred its way in the city.
No sooner had she stepped outside was she shocked at the attitude of a Miqo'te calling herself "Apple" began laughing hysterically while a group of half naked men pranced around her. Trying to avoid the strange, gathering she decided to walk around them, keeping her distance. No sooner had she gotten out of distance to the strange party(though still hearing that crazy laugh that just wouldn't stop) A tall, bare-chested man in a black skirt stepped in front of her, pulling out a sword with.. was that a moogle on the tip? surely it was! The strange man continued to pull and put away his sword, thriving on the mewling sounds coming from the poor creature on top of it. Letting out a yelp and running away from the strange man, Kyri found herself in the middle of a market, standing at the bottom of a large set of steps. Here, people were laughing about, mocking each other, one person pointing and shouting at a Hyur woman with long brown hair and a large hat, repeatedly calling her a "bot"..? was it?
To the left came a large fella, screaming at the top of his lungs over and over, repeating the same two sentences like a mad doomsayer. I thought he would stop but I can still hear the shouts.. once and a while when the wind picks up. To this strange man another man started to shout back, apparently wanting a fight with this crazed.. repeating doomsayer. I felt it best to continue walking away, not wanting to see where it lead.
A Dunesfolk came up behind me ,startling me out of her mesmerized trance of watching the strange going ons on the street. "Your pretty lady.. but arree you a lady?" the strange man whispered at me. Appalled I blurted out, "Of course I am!" He smiled mischievously at me and showed me a picture of.. my god was that my undergarments???? and the face of one of the crazed men prancing around the laughing lady by my rooms?! I grabbed the picture and angrily asked the man where he found such a thing. "Why that FFXIVPRO shop.. they have it posted right up there for the world to see.. may I say Id like to see what else you got there miss-" He got no further before I pelted him with my staff and ran off, looking for these "Pictures", wondering how in hell they came to be. When I finally found the place mentioned sure enough this fellow had various scandalous pictures strewn about. I took mine down and fled, knowing he could probably make more if he wished.. but he would not have this one.
Scared and alone trying to make it back to my room safely, I slunk around the streets avoiding all I could. Then in the middle of the street came two people talking normally.. speaking to each other with respect, I was about to approach them when the strange woman accused of being a bot pointed at them and began to yell at them for being "different" and to get that crap out of here right now" The two looked at the women and shook their heads, walking away, while the woman shouted "Ha! sure showed them!".
I barely managed to make it back to the room in one peace and a fear I dare not leave it again. What must I do to ask for a civilized conversation, to see that lining behind the clouds? Surely the whole world hasn't gone crazy.. right? But alas.. here I am at my window... The laughing women and her prancing males are still down there, it seems that a fight might break out amongst them and another group of people.. and if I listen carefully, I can still hear the doomsayer.. screaming down the street, "Ifirt party! experienced players only.. Ifrit party.. experienced players only.. Ifrit patry.. experienced players only.." with the occasional "**** you!" thrown in here and there as someone throws a word in his direction..
Surely the world hasn't gone mad... right?
*side note*
I posted this to show that it goes both ways. Why would I want a rp server? well the story explains itself. Just as you ignore us, we ignore you too, how could we not? even outside role play, the things going on in the streets of uldah are just.. stupid. You say we make a big deal, but do we? we ignore you a hell of a lot more then you do us(to those out to troll) and we do usually always go out of our ways to be away from the normal areas where trolls are likely to hide in the shadows.. or bot in the streets. This is for respect for you, and respect for us, but understand that just like normal all players seem to flock to uldah, so do we, we aren't different after all, we like to party, to fight, to socialize. But its not hard to ignore roleplay or send a tell asking someone who does it badly to go somewhere else. Usually the more annoying of the bunch are already blacklisted are they not? So lets grow up a little and realize were all just people trying to have some fun.
