Why So Much Rape in Stormblood

Ok, war is hell and bad things happen during war. I don't think this is overplayed in FFXIV, it's treated as the fact that it is. Also to deny such crimes occur, and try to erase them from the world, is not the way to deal with them.

OP I'm sorry for what happened to you. Therapy may help you cope and get past this. If therapy doesn't appeal to you there are also online forums to heolp people cope with these problems. It will never go away but it can be overcome. If a video game freaks you out like this, then you have some serious issues that need to be addressed in therapy not on a game forum. Please get the help you need.

Only the one time in which you can argue that played a role was when we helped Hien win the Nadaam. The biggest fight other than that was us fighting Zenos, which despite all our power we still lost and he ran away to make it appear that he lost. Most of the effort to turn the tide of public opinion in Doma was done through diplomacy and stealth operations (freeing those conscripted which had more stealth and subterfuge than brute strength). We didn't huff and puff and blow Doma Castle's walls down, even that military feat was thanks to Hien's brilliance as a strategist and a leader.
You can argue we won people over with the same charisma we usually do with our silence and stoic nods, but we certainly didn't bulldoze our way through until the locals had picked up arms and decided to fight for themselves, at which point we became their lance.
Did our presence there make a difference as to how the fighting ended? Absolutely. But it was not that strength that caused the fighting, it was not that strength that made people pick up arms, and the people didn't even rally behind us, they did behind Hien.

I think Yoshida also kept in mind to keep it very historical and 'stereotypical' yet neutral. Rape did not always occur to my mind but I HAVE to ask this...

Magnai was a creep in such regard... wasn't he? lol

Hey, this is super late and all, but if you're looking for a male rape victim in this game, Jacke Swallow was kidnapped and raped as a child before a member of the Upright Thieves rescued him and inspired him to become a rogue in his own right.

Thread necro. And I'm sure in the previous 17 pages it's been mentioned, but FFXIV is a Japanese MMO. It's culturally different than the West.

It's sensitive subject but these things do happen in Fantasy games too. It's not all loot pinatas and dragons. Heck I remember back in the day playing Dragon Age and was all shocked to hear about all the Elf rape happening in that game.

I like how the message of the OP, the overuse of a theme (possibly brought on by our dev’s penchant for craming in similar tropes and blatant references to Game of Thrones), was completely lost on all of these people who most likely just skimmed their post accusing them of being thin-skinned, among other things.

They didn’t say this is something this game shouldn’t explore, they said it’s becoming a thing they’re commonly applying to characters for bonus, low effort drama points.

The story paints it as one of many reasons for us to hate the antagonists, along with murder, slavery, poverty and all that other good stuff. Using this as an argument to convince people to not put implied rape in a game is absurd, and awfully sexist. If anything, I agree with you. At least then we could say it's being gender equal!

Yes, I noticed it showed up all over the place, especially in the sidequests.

In fact, I was absolutely certain they were building towards Lyse being a child of rape.
Look at her father, with skin 20 shades darker than Lyse. Then look at all the blond haired, blue eyed Garleans.
But if SE actually even meant to imply that, they sure didn't follow through with it.

. I felt sorry for Yotsuyu and I so wished that she could have been fully redeemed. That is why I hate Asahi more than anyone because he knew exactly what to do to trigger her. She had been so badly used and abused by everyone she had ever trusted that she had gone into a dissociative state. If she could have stayed Tsuyu and gone and lived her life somewhere with Gosetsu, it would have been perfect for them both. She needed someone to care for her as well as someone to take care off and the same goes for him (in a family way, not romantic). I cried when they did what they did to her character at the end. She was someone who deserved to be redeemed.

This is what I appreciate in this game. They don’t shy away from some of these darker themes, but they are mostly implied and are never explicit. If you closely read all of the dialogue, you pick up on a lot of stuff. A lot of it isn’t good because much of the timeline is wartime. But crap happens regardless.

One thing I do hate is the fact that most ‘pleasure’ industry women are depicted as Miqo'te. What canonical reason is there for that? The fact that we do not have a home (or at least one shown in the game yet...besides Forgotten Springs which belongs to a single tribe). Yes, the Miqo’te are nomadic and hunters, but we need somewhere to hang our hats. :) Getting off point. Anyway, Miqo’te have teeth and claws and are hunters by nature, so why do this “work” for a worm of a potato? Some would say money, I suppose. But the same could be true of females of any race. By and large, it is always Miqo’tes.

Perhaps it is is because we are the cutest =^.^=. *teasing*

Medieval-ish-type fantasy-ish game.

I don't really see how that interferes with the escapism aspect at all. You can't just throw a cover over something because it's BAD, but I suppose you could just go "muh fantasy setting where anything is possible" but uh, ignoring actual human history and the horrors that accompany it as an influence is more of a detriment, imo. I mean there are other things that should be thrown in as well, but so long as the narrative doesn't glorify rape, I don't really see what the issue is.

“Those who ignore history are bound to repeat it.” The same holds true for those who turn a blind eye to the suffering around them. I would much prefer it used a plot driving element showing the horrors of war and the inhumanity of those with power over others, instead of being an entertainment device where it is glorified and even playable.

I will throw in my two cents with others who have had personal experience in these matters. The way it is alluded to in this game in not ‘triggering’ to me, nor does it bother me to play the game. The experiences that the characters go through (like Yotsuyu) make me sympathize with her probably more so than someone who has not personally been affected, but these crimes are in the game because they are a very real and unfortunate part of life.

If a player is truly triggered by the events in this game, perhaps it is not one they should play. It is T rated and says why. I will not presume to tell the person to “get help” because maybe they already have or currently are under the care of a professional. If not, I will highly advise it as very helpful. But from a gaming perspective, perhaps be a little more selective and stay in the E-10 (US rating, I am sure there are equivalents in other countries) range unless you have done research on the game in advance.

It's honestly better to dig up one old thread (even tho there's a good chance of OP/first responders not playing anymore) than create 10050000 new ones on the same topic. I mean, if you were to visit Japanese forums section, most of their threads can be dated back to 2013/2014 and are still actively used. /shrug
Not to mention that devteam themselves said on several occasions that it's better to have one big thread instead of tones of small ones (though to be fair they mean it more about feedback threads).

As for the main topic, it's how war works. It's aint a disneyland, as much as the game is a "theme park" itself. It's not even that much overused honestly, they could use this trope more often, given that the Empire had its feet almost everywhere in the North part of Hydaelyn at this point.
