Is that really the reason? I always assumed it was a stylized choice. Also, I've seen anime with a clear mature rating (the Baki series on Netflix), where the men lack nipples.

Another more popular, opposite example is the Dragon Ball series, aimed towards kids, in which Goku and other male characters have been shown sporting nipples, even in the more recent Super series.

Sorry to go all otaku on you; I've consumed too much Japanese media in my lifetime.

I also think it's more about style than censors. As someone whose watched anime for years, I can probably count with my hands the amount of anime that showed male nipples regardless of age rating, with DBZ being the prime example and single one older than this decade - if anything, it seems to be a dying trend so....add them in the graphic overhaul SE! /shrugs

But pursuing it is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. You would not be able to learn this power from Square Enix.



Also it's funny how other MMO characters have nipples but we don't. Does ESO get a higher rating for displaying them?

Nope, men must be cold, aloof, stoic badasses at all times. Except for that one rush of emotion at the darkest hour to show that they've stopped holding back and get to be extra badass until the conflict is over, but then right back to hard-eyed stoicism.

I mean, you'd think that if showing emotion once made them super-badass, then doing it all the time to get that buff permanently would be a good thing, but I don't write the rules.
