How Blue Mage Could Exist in FFXIV

It's possible Blue Mage might be able to fill all three job roles. Considering the Logos system in Pyros is going to allow you to slot in passive abilities as well as actives, I'd say Blue Mage might work based off a similar system (Logos might be the prototype for a system they are going to expand on for Blue Mage) and depending on what is "slotted in" your party role will change.

Nah, if he were to exist it will be a magic/war dps, he'll learn monster ability during his job quest and will fonction like every other job in the game but for his own mecanism.

Its not much about how it can work in game rather than how many player it actualy appeal and how it can be different enough of the other DpS while fonctionning the same.

Logos system will more likely be useless cause people won't need it for afking between NM nor choose a DpS that heal with logos rather than a heal that can DpS without logos but "hey its here you can heal yourself and solo monster of your level now even as a dps" and that said if its not working only when you are already level max.

I can't imagine SE actualy thinking about reworking how job work as a whole when they just follow the same patch pattern for 5 years and keep on using the same "Diadem-like" type of instance that failed already twice for Eureka.

I doubt Logos is going to be applied outside of Eureka. If anything they seem to be shying away from any form of customization by just giving us all ten cross role skills for our roles instead of making us pick 5.

We're not going to get something that can reliably slot into multiple roles, the trinity is too strict for that and any changes would require a ground up rework. Closest we'll get is similar to Red Mage where it can maybe take the job of a healer for a handful of GCDs if needed, but you're not going in with a SCH/RDM combo.

It would be too strong if it could fill any role reliably, and too weak at specific things if it was balanced around it. Why take a BLU for damage if it's pulling tank numbers? Or a BLU for healing if it's only got 1/3 a kit?

Blue don't really play all role omg i'll say it again FF11 was broken any i said any class in tht game can play any role because of sub class also any class could tank because of battle system thy had if thy remove tht battle system Blue would die easy because there defense wasn't like pld and warrior ya we could buff it but till no like pld so stop trying to put stuff on a awesome class because u may hte it because it was the only class in the game everyone loved because everyone had different spells on there spell list set up thts wat most ppl hted blu mage can do this but dancer Can't blue mage can do this be warrior Can't etc get over blue mage wat pulled alot of ppl to play thn thy played blue mage get bored thn play different class after everytime me and my sis log in we was on blue mage thn sometimes she switch to thf to farm if i had to say a class op it would be thf/ dnc thf/nin or arc blue mage sometimes couldn't do damage because of mobs had high resistance to thm so stop it blue mage was balance only thing abt blue mage it was super fun thn any class because of how it was made i didn't hve to use spells like everyone else and Tht's awesome but other classes was awesome too so i'm not going to down thm but still we all just need to stop trying to make something look op whn its not Tht's wat break games the most your big mouth crying abt something in a game thn whn thy nerf thm thn u smile if its not your favor class switch is stupid if u so awesome over come blue mage and kill it just like thy did in FF11 tht too show hope blue mage wasn't to OP ninja vs blue mage or warrior/ ninja vs blue mage come on also uf blue mage Could play more roles tht Would help Queue up basic on how u build your blue mage tht would be awesome tht many we have 3 roles in one class but blue mage Can't be a main healer and i for am sure as hell it Can't be a healer look it up u will see or go play blue mage try to main heal watch wat happen thn u will see its not really all 3 roles its like a support dps melee mage

I mean, just playing Devil's Advocate here, but you could totally use blue magic as your primary healing force in a fair few FF games. White Wind, Angel's Whisper, and Mighty Guard are pretty strong.

Blue magic has been a pretty mixed bad in most games but they haven't been restricted by the trinity or the need to balance the skills so they could make it a healer but I think getting it to actually work would involve adding in a lot of mundane skills that would probably break the idea of the class (might be a good class ingame).

Yeah, it's covered buffs, debuffs, healing, general support, and damage all pretty comfortably. The thing is we have to look at more than FFXI for what it can and can't do, and Starcake seems pretty set on only pulling from there.

There's been some data pulled from a patch a little while back that shows it's been worked on, too. It looks like it was the only new class in the change-log which suggests it could be coming early, but nobody knows how the devs really work so I wouldn't get my hopes up. The same mine also had an unnamed, placeholder class that had spots for caster DPS gear and role actions. So while it's not a 100% confirmation, it seems pretty firmly set.

Ya because tht was the best blue mage ever i know thy Can't take everything from FF11. i'm ok with tht but all i'm looking to see is. melee mage dps blue mage with a sword. i'll be Happy and thy hve the spell list where u can set so many spells. like FF11 but in FF14 new way. To set thm up . If they make BLU a healer, its cure spells will be fast, not long like Magic Fruit in FFXI. If they make BLU a tank, its gear will not be light, it will instead wear heavy armor. Simple as that. They will change the job to fit the role they choose for it.

I agree, though, that whatever role they choose, BLU will not be good at the other roles, and it will also not be able to change roles. If BLU is built as a DPS, it will never be a tank or healer, and there will be no method to give it the ability to become a tank or healer.

BLU will not be nearly as flexible in this game as it's been in others (especially FFXI). All jobs in this game are rigidly fixed in their roles, even if those roles differ from in previous games. BLU will be just the same.

Ya but it can still be the blue from FF11 even if the change happen just give thm sword and spells on different cooldowns like ninja if i use a weapon skill my spell can be used still but u Can't use a weapon skill if casting a blue mage spell u hve to wait till u release the spell thn use weapon skills etc

i mean it could work where there's a whole bunch of skills and you slot them and get different traits and playstyles. could also have "healer/tank/dps" setlists with different abilities slotted for each one depending on what you want to queue as and be unable to change on the fly.

So i was right blue mage gunblade which thy showed in tht shadowbringers trailer and dark knight getting revamp and i also said thy may add it before 5.0 lol and u hve to learn skills from enemy yaaaa so Tht's a plus but question is. Blue mage looking like black mage alittle bit unless There is a sword inside tht weapon he using also from tht video it almost like like white mage play style hope i'm wrong but will see soon

I'm hoping it works something like logograms as fsr as how you hunt for spells. I also hope that blu has no role, but that you pick a role when you're equipping your spells. They could have tank dps and healer spells and then nuetral spells too plus access to whatever role actions for the role they selected. And I hope they do something like in xi with spell combo job traits and also how setting spells works with a certain amount of points you can set and different spells being worth different points. They could also have a free role mode that lets you set any spell regardless of role if you have enough points or whatever to set it, but you can't equip role actions. Honestly I think just a ffxiv retrofit to the way the ffxi blu works now will be the best way to implement it in this game

my one apprehension atm is IF (well know more tonight) blum doesnt have a way to slot into the triad for df/pf then lacking access to group content like dungeons and raids effectively prevents them from having access to many cool gear glams and epic fights with friends, im really curious and happy with what ive seen so far though cause it fits well with my idea of interchangeable slots

ok, its slotted as dps which is good, but im really sad blue mage cant do anything in df, please can you please find a way to lift those restrictions in the future?

my thoughts are something like building essentially a deck for those contents with certain slots like "cone aoe attack" "ranged burst aoe" "burst aoe" you need to fill, that would let you choose from a variety of attacks youve learned, but once youre in a party you will have your bases covered, that way "THE META" creep is minimized, it still rewards the exploration and collection blue mage is well known for, and allows them to participate in the larger game

Blue mage can do duty finder but u need to start a group or put party finder up so ppl join your queue thy was just saving you Can't do random duty finder because some newbs would join and basically waste everyones time because he/she didn't farm there spells before queuing up i see alot of ppl tht Don't get wats going on with blu but i know because of FF11 was like this you hve to shout for groups but for FF14 u have alot of ways to fun a group now yes i know some ppl will troll whn blu release but we blue mages hve to farm which is going to be fun also its rewarding because there will be alot of builds for blue so hve fun i say whn its added in January i may just lvl blue to 50 thn wait to do 4.5 stuff because i want to be blue mage only unless gun blade look awesome which i'm feeling like it may be a dps too all so blue mage is a dps u will see it under RDM whn thy add it ^^

Well first off, Happy Holidays to all! Now that I'm finally able to get back into the game again, I figured I kinda had to post my thoughts on the shiny new job we'll be getting in the very imminent patch seeing as how I sorta started this thing.

It seems the Blue Mage we'll be getting for 4.5 is the same vision that Yoshi spelled out whenever he was forced into talking about the job, especially in that it would be more of a solo experience and really go against the standards of how jobs work in the game. Devs had a choice between maintaining the standards for jobs and upholding series tradition, they chose the latter, meaning that the job would have to be barred from being treated like any other job in the game because of not only how fluid it is as far as its skillset can go, but also the overwhelming demand by the players for that XI feel.

When I made my concept all the way back in Heavensward, I wanted Blue Mage to be a workable concept that could be treated like any other job and would work within the necessities of job standards at the time, looking through every Blue Mage in the Final Fantasy series to get an idea of how it could work within the confines of XIV. While there was a concept in the works that was adapted for the job gauges of Stormblood, but there wasn't a whole lot changed. What I didn't expect though was that this thread would go on for TWO YEARS, which has definitely shown me just how passionate people are for this job when to me, it was just another one out of around twenty-five individual job concepts I made at the time. Although it may not have seen like it at times, the whole thread has been a truly enlightening experience for me, so for those who did voice their opinions on this thread, I cannot thank you enough for your thoughts on the matter.

As for my thoughts on the Blue Mage we're getting, I'm still going to play it. I'm curious about things like the origin devs chose for it, how all the spells we'll get will work cohesively, the idea behind using a walking cane as the weapon of choice and especially why the male AF set looks like its design influence was a five-year-old's crayon drawing. While I do have concerns from the job, none of them have anything to do with the job itself or how it works so much as they pertain to the production side of things. I think I'm going to like it for three reasons: 1) it puts more emphasis on open-world content, 2) it gives me something to level that's not Fisher and 3) most importantly, job devs can FINALLY move on and work toward other jobs that are able to work with the game's design and even jobs exclusive to XIV, which is something Yoshi has expressed interest in before.

I'm going to walk away from this thread once and for all. Who knows, maybe I might cook up a new job concept after Shadowbringers comes out.

A lot of us will still be asking for a full BLU job to be in 6.0 or later. This limited BLU is not enough for some of us especially after this week's live letter and we can see how close it is to being a standard job.

Hmm yes nothing says close to a standard job like a ranged dps with a tank stance, like that isn't the most conceptually appalling thing for someone to have access to in a group. Also a series of abilities that for the most part looked completely bad. 1k needles has come comedy prowess in low level dungeons though, and bad breath may turn out good if the paralyze math's out decently.

It looked like work had been done to make it a standard job that could do more than one role before they decided to just make it something else.

With the tank stance and with the healing skill that is confirmed it does look like they did toy around with the idea of having a job that breaks the trinity mold and is a true hybrid. Seems as if they did listen to some of the feedback some of the player base had with RDM, but in the end they properly scraped that idea and instead of going back and reworking it BLU they just doubled down and made it a limited job.

After having talked with the vast majority of consistently subscribing member of FF14, I know I speak for the vast majority of the community when I write: not only does no one have a problem with Blue Mage, but we are really excited about this Class.

Honestly, I'm kind of forced to be on the forum now and then but most players of this game are not on the forum.

That's quite a claim to make. How did you come into a majority of consistently subbed members of the game? What number is that really and can you actually provide proof of such a thing? It's easier to find people who agree with your position as humans tend to collectively stay with people who have a similar mindset. As far as I can see while I have seen a good chunk of people who are happy to at least have the class I have seen an overwhelming vocal majority against the idea of class being singled out with a design that clashes with the game's battle content philosophy. I think its safe to say people have quit at the notion of not being able to main BLU in the raids while at the same time knowing many are gonna reserve judgement till the class comes out.

Personally I see a whole Eureka debacle coming out of this again with "Don't judge it since its not out" and people rightfully putting together context clues as to the effort that will be put into BLU.

Nah, you're wrong. They have already planned BLU's progress from 1 to 70 and will continue from there. Not only is BLU going to be a limited job for the foreseeable future, BLU is just the first of possibly many. The devs have already mentioned ideas for BST and PUP as potential limited job candidates. It's likely that a new one will be introduced near the end of every expansion. It really isn't some decision they've made on a whim, they really have put a lot of thought into it, including the initial mixed reaction.

Sure, that doesn't mean it will pan out well, but I like it that they're going out of their comfort zone and surprising players including me. It doesn't hurt that I liked what they showed off from the last live letter.

I don't think there will be more limited jobs in this manner unless the feedback to limited BLU is overwhelmingly positive after the backlash we've already seen and the potential for it to grow and keep going after the patch.

I have to disagree that they are going out of their comfort zone. I think they right back where they are comfortable after trying to push things with BLU. It looks like work was done to have the first multi-role job and then, for whatever reason, they decided the challenge was too much/not worth it.

Why do you assume it has to be overwhelmingly well-liked? Eureka is considered a success based on the only criteria that SE truly cares about: the number of people actually doing the content. As long as a lot of people end up playing the job and show some mild enjoyment out of it, I'm sure they'd chalk it up as a win. And like Eureka, I'm sure they factored in that some people will not like BLU, no matter how fun it is.

No, I'm pretty sure they are still out of their comfort zone. Their m.o. was to always adapt an iconic job to fit as either one of three roles. That is after all what everyone expected them to do. Limited BLU still retains its hybrid aspect as well its customization when it comes to it's spell selection. It would lose a significant portion of both by being associated with the other jobs. Let's not pretend it wouldn't.

A multi-role BLU, while better than just a caster DPS, would essentially be just a hybrid BLU broken into three. And more importantly, it will play and have the same level of utility like the other jobs. Little to no attention on customization (since everything will become mandatory) and it will likely lose out on the learning aspect. At that point...why call it BLU?

I could be wrong but I don't see them turning more jobs into side content if the first one isn't received well enough. There's been such a backlash already and there will be more after the patch and coming months. No one can know for sure how much but it will happen. It's a large risk to turn a very requested job into something that can't be used in the full game and the positives of doing this have to outweigh the negatives. There will most likely be a higher threshold on how well limited BLU does compared to Diadem/Eureka for them to keep going with the concept as is.

There's some value in the limited job concept so hopefully they would use it as the framework for another system if limited BLU doesn't pan out.

You and others can think they are while myself and others think they are not.

I think it's too soon to say that limited BLU will be a full on hybrid. We don't know enough about the spell interactions yet to say for sure that it can be a competent tank while also healing for example. It's possible that the 24 spell limit was chosen to prevent that from happening.

Making spell builds was only part of XI if you're counting the main FF titles so I wouldn't say it's part of BLU's identity.

It's your opinion that it would lose too much and it's my opinion that it wouldn't.

Multi-role BLU could be 3-4 "jobs" that share the key identity of learning and using enemy abilities. I already went over the customization part but why do you think spell learning would have to be removed? They could keep the spell learning method they went with and still have a multi-role BLU. It would depend largely on how it's done. For example, it could be that you swap between the roles using stances/buffs that swap out your bars but you still need to have learned the appropriate spells for that role.


I should add that I still think there should be BLU as a standard job and the limited job version. Best outcome would be those things AND the first muli-role job and/or a talent system to start allowing more within the trinity system the game has.

So you've talked to a handfull of players on your server or datacenter and you think you speak for the vast majority? Sorry to disappoint you but your datacenter is not the vast majority of the final fantasy community.

Backlash that is expected and probably overblown (much like that for Eureka). It's a pity that people didn't get to live out their fantasies with BLU, but their day dreams not coming true isn't exactly a convincing argument. I mean I didn't get my dream RDM. Doesn't mean I'm owed my vision for RDM. It's something you get used to and move on. Or end up enjoying. People will pick up BLU and either liking it or not and move on. Especially when they have other new jobs to toy with.

Why wouldn't it make for a tanky healer? It has a tank stance and will almost certainly get at least one healing spell. It will have access to other utilities to help it do what it needs to do. And what if BLU builds is heavily inspired by XI? Is that not a Final Fantasy title? This BLU is clearly taking inspirations from older FF like XI. Just because that was the first BLU iteration to introduce builds doesn't somehow invalidate it as an influence on BLU's identity.

I'm sure that if it gets to the part of having to have mandatory spells, SE will step in and make them automatically learned. It won't be the same hybrid job anymore. It NEEDS to learn these skills in order to work. Think like a WHM without Cure II.

As for the best of both worlds...easier said than done. We all wish that everyone can be happy, but that almost never ends up becoming true. In this case, time and resources are scarce. They can't afford to spend too much time on just one job.

A key difference being a lot of content (mounts, glamours, and this expansion mcguffin-weapon, etc.) are all gated behind Eureka. Put a big enough carrot in front of a person and they'll walk through hell barefoot. So far the rewards for the "pinnacle" of Blue Mage (the Masked Carnival) are all outdated seals and tomestones. No custom glamour, no mounts, no titles . . . nothing. Maybe they'll be a big reveal to change that but at the moment the rewards for participating with Blue Mage at the highest level are, in a word, obsolete.
