But then why even bother with a story at all? Just line the mobs up and let people fight them where ever.
Maybe at a later point they could allow this with the fall of Ishgard, but I for one would want that to be a long way off.

An again, The DRG from FFXI is the FFXI DRG. A lot more DRG's in FF's never had a pet.
I personally love Pet classes, but for me this is just one that shouldn't happen at least at this point in the game.

As someone who never played XI, I think having a little dragon pet would be awesome :) I was considering becoming a lancer anyways, just to have a strong melee job.

If not a lil dragon, maybe an elemental, or some creature that would work with the lore better.

I actually saw this brought up earlier, or somewhere else, and it struck me as very interesting.

But I would actually be interested in seeing DRG have the capability to morph into a Dragon for "brief periods" for attack purpose. I think this would be a neat and unique mechanic to the new DRG. Now I don't mean I want this like a Druid a-la WoW. I just think in lieu of adding pets, maybe a few metamorphisis-type abilities (thus incorporating "breath" attacks with very pretty graphics) could be pretty interesting.

Besides, if it's one thing FF MMO jobs/classes lack, it's a shape-shifter.

Real Dragoons aren't FFXI Dragoons anyway. REAL Dragoons are Kain Highwind-style. No pets, Jump is the main ability, stab people for a bunch of damage.

That sounds cool too! Shape shifting, something I haven't thought of. First thing I think of is Vincent.. That beast he turned in to didn't seem to have much of a story or purpose, but was it awesome?? Heck yeah!

We can meet halfway on this I think.

Let the Dragoon themselves use dragon abilities. Fire Breath, Ice Breath, Terror Roar, Paralyzing Glare, etc. They don't have to transform, they don't have to have a pet and they can still use awesome abilities while gaining jump abilities and retaining lance skills.

Yea, I don't even mean it has to be tailored to Dragoon. I just think a shape-shifter of some sort (a la Vincent, good catch CO) could provide some interesting. That could free up breaths, etc. for Dragoon on a normal scale. Either way. There are too many options available to be like "Hey, make it like this Dragoon from this number in the series."

Which we already do, we have a Semi Jump AKA Doomspike 2 and We are a line of Effect class. I didn't grind lancer to 50 only to find out SURPRISE Lancer is now Lancer v2 with Dodo style Bad Breath attacks....sounds exciting doesn't it.

its funny you reference Kain. if anything Kain was a lancer in Dragoon Armor, which is exactly what I'm afraid of.

XI had the mini dragon so the class would stand out. Warrior and Samurai both had access to to polearms and you'd be hard pressed to tell a polearmed samurai from a dragoon just by looking at them.

But we Don't have Sam, and I doubt WAR has access to Polearms in XIV, so your not going to get confused with other classes as this isn't XI.

Tbh if DRG is just LNC then yeah they messed up, An while I still dislike some of the changes that have been made, most have been for the better.
So how about waiting to see what the Job gets before crying about it with absolutely no detail or even hints at all.
You might have some Amazing ability you'll love that make the class stand out.

But it sure as hell doesn't need a pet imo!
Especially one which requires the player being KOS to anything related to Ishgard or a massive rewrite of the law just for 1 class pet that doesn't even have 90% support from what i see of the player base.

Its funny that you mention that, because I'm afraid that a Paladin is a Gladiator in Paladin armor. And Monk is a Pugilist in Monk Armor, and Warrior is a Marauder in Warrior Armor. See where this is going? Why be worried about Dragoon being an enhanced Lancer? umm, so nevermind Archer, but everything else are enhanced versions of their original class, locked to certain abilities. Giving a Wyvern to Dragoon is like asking to give Monk a Kung-Fu Panda. Why can't Monks have Kung-Fu Pandas? WHY DAMMIT!?

No one ever really mentions Ricard Highwind, being the first dragoon in the ff series you would think he would be mentioned more. XD

It bothers when people stubbornly adhere to this concept that all dragoons should always directly reference to Kain. I never see anyone up in arms about archer/bard being different in this game because its not cannon with Edward.

It always appears to me that the popular notion is dragoon should always equate to Kain, but all other classes can be reinvented however they want and no one cares about it being different to the other famous characters who shared that role.

Course we'll get jump, that's a given, but there's got to be more to the class to create a specific need and gimmick. Wyvern was a brilliant introduction to do just that for XI. And dragoon became an adaptive melee with great enmity control with smart use of the wyvern. I fell in love with it in so many ways.
Which is why I would have adored to see a reprise. And if 14 dragoon got the wyvern, and anyone complained, I would have directed them to switch back to lancer then haha. But, alas, I highly doubt that will be due to the fact that the pet system won't even be in place til some unknown date in 2013.

So, therefore, I hope they are able to do something innovative to make dragoon interesting in many aspects once again.
But, admittingly, a dragoon sans wyvern in 14 will probably drive me away from this game until a pet class can be had.

Someone earlier in this thread questioned how a dragon companion would fit into the Ishgard storyline of dragons being a constant threat and enemy. I still think it could work if you think about the Alchemist story line quests. Not to spoiler, but it also shows that there are situations where dragons may also assist under mysterious conditions. Or maybe they are just misunderstood like in the movie, How To Train Your Dragon. ;p

If i am remembering correctly Yoshi mentioned an introduction of a dragon race as a playable charecter... so why would it be hard to fit wyverns into the lore. FFXIV can really do what ever it wants the lore has been revamped, corrected, and rewritten so many times, if there was a serious lore problem it would get corrected *note* this is one of my biggest problems with the game right now; whats FF without a solid coherent unabridged story?

A Dragoon without a Pet is still not just a Lancer.

I'm using FFXI Dragoon as a reference. Please note the fact that the pet dies easily. A few years ago FFXI Dragoon 2hr ability was a lot worse. In worse case scenario back a few years ago the Dragoon 2hr ability Call Wyvern would summon the pet only a second/or a min later the pet wyvern dies from an AOE hit. Now I believe Call Wyvern is a 20min recast ability now. Its usefulness adds a little more dps, and Healing Breath for solo.

I think this kinda goes without saying. I highly doubt anyone wants a carbon copy of the last iteration. Personally I want something more intuitive, aggressive looking, able to play armor upon (or even "feed" it materia to make it a certain type of Dragon), raise it, etc etc etc.

The want crowd wants their pet back but a far more robust and interesting version this time.

It sounds like people just want a pet job.

I think the fact that they referenced Kain Highwind's name for the Dragoon in the 2.0 concept screenshot is more than enough proof to say that they are NOT reiterating FFXI's Dragoon in XIV.

Nope. I was a 75 (when 75 was the top) bst smn and drg. I want a dragon for my dragoon that is my permanent companion and more intuitive and robust as aforementioned.

Not to mention the fact that the level 30 CNJ quest hints at a dragon-like dragoon pet about as obviously as it possibly could.

Which is exactly my point, I can make a Paladin Right now. why wait for a patch to implement whats already in game. these new Jobs must stand out From the melting pot that is the current class system, and it must do so with more than just new shiny equipment.

if that requires a Dragoon Riding in on a TechnoToad while shooting lasers 360 Degrees so be it. if not im fine with that, so long as whatever they decide to do is unique and makes me Dragoon and just not some Lancer in Spiky attire

No, you wouldn't be a specialized Paladin without the specialized Paladin skills. Just an all-arounder Gladiator. He can tank too, but a specialized tanker can tank better.

A dragoon can jump higher and kill faster than an all-around lancer, I would think.
To get a dragon pet would just mean to make the dragoon dmg weaker for the balance.
Dragoon + blood-thirsty chocobo + blood-thirsty dragon would be a little to much

I don't care much to have the lil' flyin' rat back but i would sure like to see a Limit Break ability involving a mature sized Dragon/Wyvern/Drake/Wyrm for a short period of time with an ultimate breath ability...

a dragoon gets a fluffy dragon. i think its only fair a paladin gets a pink unicorn
