I just cut it fast: not gonna happen
It would be nice though :)
90% of people in this thread are for swimming and related content.... why no community rep love for this thread? I understand this is probably at the bottom of the Dev's list but it would be nice to know if it is considered for the future.
I would love to swim or be able to jump in the water from one of Limsa's bridges and get to explore more. Imagine diving under water and seeing a whole new world to explore, monsters to fight, lost treasures to find and secret areas to access.
I like the idea of underwater content more than swimming, though any game I ever played that had swimming, I often deliberately spent a lot of time doing it. If it could be implemented well and not look or feel clunky or too limited, then I would be for swimming. But moreover I just like the idea of underwater content.
After seeing the fluid character animations in FFXIV they could do great things for swimming and make it really fun and realistic if they put some effort into it.
If jumping really does become reality then i'm sure we will see swimming sometime in the game's future expansions.
Swimming content? No. Underwater content like Ruins (FFX/FFXI etc)? Sure.
Yes please. That would be amazing. Maybe they could make underwater areas that at least have some imagination in their design unlike the world above. FFX underwater fights were really amazing. This would make XIV stand out of the crowd too. (In other ways that are not just negative.)
Underwater content was just ruins that were visibly underwater, as in:
http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Al...Undersea_Ruins
The engine for this game really wouldn't produce good swimming content since based on how XIII's physics were, while they're solid, with everything being placed serverside including needing actions confirmed before even being sent to the server for XIV it would just be..a mess lol.
See i'm wondering where this info is coming from. You're not the first one to mention this but i wasn't able to find that info anywhere on the web. Where exactly did SE mention that Crystal tools had a limitation for rendering water? Plus i thought the game was rendered client side too.
Swimming animation are not an issue... it can be done with any engine.. it is just character animations. Water physics is another thing but keep in mind that FFXIII was not designed for swimming so it is by no mean any indication of the capabilities of the engine. Even if water physics are not in Crystal tools by default, which i find hard to believe since it is a pretty recent engine and that is kind of a standard feature, it can be programmed into it..... If SE wanted to make another FF game like FFX i don't think they would make a brand new engine to support underwater content/mini games etc....
It's not the rendering, it's the mechanics behind that would be sluggish because all of XIV's interface issues are due to the fact everything has to go through the server rather than the typical Client > Server > Client. It's more like Client > Server > Server > Client, every action has to be registered with the server then you need to get a response from the server for that action then you get the desired outcome, which is why they've mentioned needing to optimize the servers still even though they're stable excluding market wards. It's not an issue in animation rendering as that's the whole purpose of CT lol, it's more on the mechanics side of thing.
CT is more of a cinematic engine, they've admitted it was a mistake to go with this engine initially, (http://www.finalfantasyunion.com/new...take--855.html), since the engine was more designed as a supplement, cinematic and compatibility engine, it's not an adequate gaming engine. Even recently UE got seamless transitions going efficiently, whereas CT had it just prior that update. So CT does the job, but it's main focus was for cinematics.
XIV is horribly optimized, a lot of it is due to the choice of making the interface serverside which iirc, was to be done as a "RMT countermeasure", every update the response time gets a bit better, but there's still a noticeable delay which isn't present in any game that uses client side interfaces. Another example is Active/Passive mode, ignoring the animation lock, you can get a noticeable delay in switching when the server is having issues, whereas in XI, even if you have animation delay/lock, your client sent the info and the server confirmed it and you're already attacking even without seeing the attacks, in XIV? You need server responses for everything, that's why swimming mechanics would just be..sloppy based on the current game architecture.
Swimming and jumping in MMo's leads to exploits. Eastern MMo's have the right idea keeping your feet nailed to the floor. I for one hope they don't add it, as I hate seeing people hop about like rabbits in WoW.
Hopefully they do, it's also very possible to shift things to rely on the client more, it just depends on how messy their code is and how heavily reliant everything is on it being serverside atm.
Exploits will always be there, Crippling the players and removing as many features as possible to avoid it is simply stupid. What eastern MMO has you nailed to the floor besides FFXI and XIV? i was under the impression that the majority of wester and easter mmos had jumping and some swimming.
Pandora Saga is the only one off the top of my head.Quote:

Never heard of it...
Also for those saying they dont want to see people jumping around like in WOW, you do realise jumping is a real life action and i don't see why it would not fit a game that has a more "realistic" approach then other mmos? People in wow constantly jump to jump over obstacles, jump off ledges, bridges, buildings etc.... make traveling faster and easier where in FFXIV you have to go around these obsacles all the time.
Hey gang! Yoshida was pretty active on the forum this weekend, and while this is kind of an old topic, his post seemed to fit pretty well in here so... He touches a bit on the discussion around 'free running' (or sprinting) as well as underwater/swimming-related content.
Thank you for translating this post for everyone, Bayohne. I know this isn't a confirmation that we'll definitely be able to swim underwater in the future, but I think it's really exciting news that they're trying to make it happen. Before Yoshi-P became producer I never would have thought that it would be possible to do things like swim or climb to high places in XIV. I really like the direction he's trying to take the game in, and that features that were previously impossible suddenly have hope of getting implemented.
Go FFXIV team!!
Eh, I don't care much about swimming but I'd like underwater content.
XIV's version of Rapture anyone?
Ohhhh first expansion having under water temples?! that would be a cool concept ^^.
Definitely didn't plan to hear anything about swimming 0.o, I figured that was something we would never see. hahah awesome
Seriously summer needs to be over already, so these next couple updates will be out of the way so we can see some fresh new content and PS3 release give new life to this game. I can't WAIT!!! Underwater content sounds very exciting, I can only imagine what it'd look like with the graphic power of this game *drools*
I don't really have a desire to swim, but i won't naysay others desires. I've just never seen swimming done right in regards to camera controls, and god knows the camera controls in this game are already limited due to ps3, just like XI's and ps2, I don't want to be able to zoom out so far that my character looks like a little baby either, eff that. But I would like content as previously mention where you take some kinda of machina submarine...it leads to a coral reef area...and we call it sea?
Can we have swimming fatigue? I don't want to see people spamming swim.
Monster hunter tri did pretty well with underwater swimming controls. Basically you move in relation to where your camera is facing. Basicall just point the camera in the direction you want and move forward. Need to move down, look down and move forward. If it can work in a quick, action heavy game it could work here.
lol!
Anyway, this seems pretty cool, really thinking outside the box when you look back at FFXI with all of the things they are adding, which I like. Underwater temples seem really cool, maybe we could even learn more about the Sahagin and Leviathan! :) I really want to see a zone that looks as cool as Al'Taieu did, though!!!
Awesome! This sounds great! I've always loved to swim in MMO's and just any game in general really. I'm excited to see where this game will be a year from now. *Drools*
When I hear underwater and Final Fantasy, I think of:
Beyond the deep blue sea
Underwater Ruins
And of course DONT TEASE THE OCTOPUS, KIDS!
Ultros
Octomammoth
Granted they arent underwater at all times, and we wont be in a XIV underwater dungeon, but you cant have an underwater dungeon without some sort of aquatic boss. Not to mention i'd love to see an Ultros cameo boss appearance since he works like a Gilgamesh style character.
Holy Chocobos, Batman! This sounds pretty freakin' awesome!! O___O I'll be honest... I didn't think I would ever hear the team give the green light on considering expanding the game to underwater or "swimming in water" scenarios and exploration.
Go FFXIV team!!!! (/cheer)
The only thing I think of is Vash'jir which I completely hate. Though it can be done properly. I just hate the way WoW has implemented it. Though the actual instance is "underwater" it's in a temple like structure that you have to swim to get to, but once you get there, you're not swimming anymore.
Kinda spoiled by the Japanese translations thread by Reinhart(good job with that as always), but nonetheless thanks Bayohne for the response and putting it back up ins. I'm honestly more excited about swimming and underwater content than I would be about jumping any day. It's great to see that our leading man and the dev team are also a fan.
Alright people, put your thinking caps on and lets get to idea tossing.
ACTUALLY, I posted an idea in the dungeon thread that resembles the force field idea in Crystal Chronicles. Maybe that field could actually be a bubble that produces oxygen for you in an underwater temple of sorts, and aquatic mobs are constantly trying to take out the field generator while you have to defend it and progress through the submerged ruins/dungeon/whaever.
BAM! Insta-idea.
...Or you know, aquatic races or submarines...
Bayohne :o
Also, I've been thinking that there needs to be more ways to keep our fellow gatherers interested in their professions, and adding underwater content in relation to fishing, such as in-depth(no pun intended) spear fishing as some people mentioned, and other ideas.
Oh man I am excite. I hope this works out.
Excellent stuff, I'd love to see Geomancer in that case!
i'm not into water content much, even though i'm looking forward to gw2 it's not for the water content in it. i didn't like it in wow. i think my dislike of water in video games is routed back when i was little, playing mario brothers, 2.1 board i believe it was, ....dun dun dun water. was one of the only levels in that game that no matter how many times u beat the game always took the same amount of time unlike the rest of the levels lol.
but yeah i prefer no water in my mmo's to swim in at all, now boats to fully control on top like some of the older ff series ..yeck yes.
