They look pretty much like them. Looks like we are getting some more Drogo and Dany variations running around.

SO you're telling me...
In Heavensward, I could be a Dragon Dragoon riding a dragon killing dragons.

Au'ra and DRK fit pretty well ^^
Being half dragons (maybe) they probably wanted to do more, but their early roll-out of Yugiri (being the iconic Au'Ra) forced them into keeping the females short whereas the males could be everything they wanted to do. I do agree that the psoriasis scale blemishes aren't enough, they should have been scalier, but they probably wanted to appeal to Japanese gamers more than Western gamers (the Japanese classically portray half-beasts as being mostly human with a few bestial features). Have to remember who their home market is.
How look this ugly?

The more I look, the more I hate the way the males look. They just have too much -stuff- on their head. It's a lot more dialed back with the females.
Just more humans with attachments. Very disappointing. Was hoping for a fully reptilian looking race.
I like the look of them the females do seem to be very mysterious and may appeal to me, they seem to have nice hair with ornaments.
I am glad they don't run like female Hyur and i feel both male and female fit well into the world.
Wish they release early a benchmark with the new race in it to be able to create the look. To see it better and check the different option and emotion ^^
Female Au Ra have this long hairstyle where there is a split in the middle, its not a twintail, but looks very close to it. I have seen this hairstyle in anime and I like it!
Sucks that we need to wait untill spring :(
Anything remotely showing manly traits or womanly traits=sexist. Didn't you know?
*tips fedora* Good day, fellow Redditors.
who said both are the average Au Ra size model? it might be smallest femal and tallest male.
One wonders how they kiss...
"I LOVE YOU WAIFU COME KISS...wait, watch the horns...little to the left...WATCH YOUR CHEEKS...okay perfect don't tilt your face at all now."
*kiss*
While it does look like there's potential for the gap between the sexes to be very wide, I'm really excited about the Au'Ra regardless. I probably won't switch to a male character, but there are a lot of people who might, and maybe just as many who already play males and want something more fantastical. I'll probably just play with the female character creation to see if I can find options I like enough to make the switch from Hyur. Cool race concept either way, pretty much exactly what I expected after the main story revealed more Shiva-related lore. Heavensward is shaping up to be pretty potentially amazing!
I don't like how large of a difference males have with the females. It's like there's four clans of Au Ra, not two.
The females are tiny teenage girls and the males are large bulky older, but young, men. What the hell were they thinking?
The worst part is that this race looks extremely generic and forgettable. Even in comparison to the humans. The MMO community is used to these asian-looking stereotypical fantasy-fulfilling designs. The Au Ra race looks exactly like it belongs in a cheap Korean F2P, not a quality P2P Final Fantasy MMO.
Already we are entering the direction of a forgettable F2P by catering to their tastes. A cash shop. Pay to Win. The Au Ra race designs.
Sexual dimorphism is a real thing - just saying. Au'Ra are interesting I might mess around with it for a bit when it comes out. Miqote are still more attractive overall though I think.
Female Lions are 2/3s the weight of males in general. All primates with the exception of Gibbons, males are larger (greater muscle mass) than the females. Looking at birds even, males in general have more vivid plumage and are often larger. Sexual dimorphism exists in nature it is real, but because this is a game some people think it should not exist here. That is their opinion, I for one have no problem with the size difference.
Just like FFXI before it, FFXIV is a world with a distinct visual continuity. It is an artificial world with a cohesiveness held together as much by how the designers limit/constrain their designs as it is with how fantastical the designs end up being.
It can be still have a evolution lore. Because every body difference is based on evolution, like men are more muscular because they were the hunters since the stone age. Even in moden days woman like muscular men, because 10k years old instincts say that the muscular men promise safety and meat in the stomach.
I was actually hoping to have a more slender and delicate male that is androgynous. But I didn't get that, I can still hope for the possibility though.
But one of the thing that differs all the playable races from the beastmen is that they're human/of the race of Men. Most humans don't have that level of dimorphism within closely related groups of males and females (this is why I suggested difference by clan/tribe rather than gender).
Furthermore, the females are "elegant and mysterious". What previous FF race does that remind us of? Viera? And Yoshi said that he couldn't envision male Viera and wanted to make the genders drastically different. He also mentioned that he felt that the race poll was skewed because Viera were mentioned and that he wanted to make a reptilian race (I can't find the source because google returned too many hits).
To me, it seems like the Au Ra are an amalgam of all of that.
i feel he did a great jobs there, it's a new race for FF14 only, they can please people that want a cute female or a nice looking male. don't forget we only have seen a few face of them, we can expect to have more rough face for the male. and before judge let see what they offer in the creation (they really need to release a benchmark where it's possible to create a character and see some animation and emote of the race)
I don't really have a problem with it. I'm not going to get upset and write a petition and rant all over the forums about social justice and sexism. It's not so much the size difference that gets me, but how frail the females appear.
That's the kind of thing I was talking about. ^^
Again, I'm not going to get upset if there isn't any lore, but I enjoy lore and think it'd be fun if there was.
Overall, I really like new race and will probably try it out.
They aren't human.
Lore-wise their physical development could be influenced by their spiritual/mystical side. Males pride themselves on being big and strong and this fuels their rapid growth. Females in their culture value elegance and an agelessness and they seem to suddenly mystically stop aging close to the start of sexual maturity.
You are doing that in the wrong way, they didn't evolved to be muscular, it's because muscular ones survived more. It's like white animals in snowy lands, they couldn't survive if they were colored, therefor you don't see much colored animals there because every time colored were born, they died and couldn't spread their genes. Evolution is random, it does not have any aim, the lucky ones survive, the others disappear.
While I think it's sexist and dumb regardless:
Dravanians are basically dragons (the ones we see around Steel Vigil, Stone Vigil, Savara, etc.) who can glamour themselves to look like Hyurs or whatever other race they want. If Au Ra are, in fact, Elezen + Dravanian mix race, they could be taking the form of what is most appealing for each sex (male = muscular, female = petite).
What I think is actually going on is that female Miqo'te is an incredibly popular race in JP (and in NA/EU), so they decided to make the female of the race incredibly fanservice-y. It's really lazy design, and pretty sexist, but it's what we're getting.
