So after getting frustrated for missing Odin tons of times because of his sometimes ridiculous spawn times (night/work hours). You're telling this entire community that the armor is virtually useless outside of wearing it for fashion inside towns despite the existence of a glamour system which COULD allow it to be worn in battle. And why? Because of a random limitation in the vanity system and the armor's poor design from the ground-up?

I don't think people will rise up in anger like it happened for the housing so I'm not hoping for a fix anytime soon, hell its a really minor thing compared to the rest of what the patch brings, but it's an other example of Square Enix and the design team sometimes just making random choices that invalidate an entire activity within the game for no reason at all.

Herpaderp....town gear. I dont get most peoples confusion here. It was never intended to be anything more than town gear. If you EVER had any thought that they put it in game to be used in battle, or for any other reason than to look cool standing around town, then you were fooled somewhere along the way.

even the most casual player could get a fresh character to lvl 50 in a week, especially post 2.2. this entire thread is nothing but pointless whining

not to mention the gear in this game gets cycled out fairly quickly (and looks mostly the same depending on job) pre lvl 50. you would literally be applying new glamours every 4 - 5 lvls, how do you plan to pay for all these prisms pre lvl 50 anyways?

So...vanity gear with even less use. Really I don't see the point of adding interesting looking gear if it's just something to wear when you're doing nothing.
And if It's supposed to be an incentive to encourage people to get to 50, reason supporting that it's relatively quick to do so, why do we have leveling at all?

Will the glamour system be modified to fit the armor? I see they said currently, so I'm assuming that might change down the line, however given the near iconic history Odin has within FF and the sheer badassness of the armor itself it is strange that the development team did not think to ensure it be compatible with the feature.

One can only assume it was a conscious decision. In which case I'm curious as to the reasoning behind it since even at game launch the armor was strategically unsound and so of pure cosmetic value. Value now drastically diminished since the system that was basically thought up to accommodate such items negates it.

Might as well give us a Leviathan Chocobo Barding which we can't use since it gives the chocobo -2 Speed.. or how about introducing a new race that can't wear any armor at all -__-

I totally agree with you. This vanity system is too limiting and there are too many restrictions, but since you will need lots of prisms to change your appearance it makes sense that it's unlockable only after level 50. Before you reach your level cap, you are constantly changing your equipment so you would have to buy expensive prisms just to keep your "look" until the end. Actually, it doesn't make much sense also for lvl50players, since they will be farming iLVL 90 /100 gear and their equipment will change quite often. Anyway, that's the way they decided to go through, I don't like it but ... there's little we can do...

Yes, it should. And most likely it still is. It's not like they are somehow making this the only reason to get to 50. It's just a bit extra motivation I think.

Anyways, I was just trying to figure their reasoning to set it to 50. I agree with you that it feels a bit limiting.

I didn't think it is such a big issue. But apparently it is, since this thread gets bigger and bigger.

Yeah I agree you should get it at lvl 1 and without having to do a quest. Same as your chocobo mount. And dyeing gear. And primals all modes. And pvp. Plus you should be given your relic. And housing for free. Plus all aetherlytes unlocked without having to travel to them before. Plus 2000 myth and philo. Plus ct and bcob access. Heavens forbid you have to work towards something in a mmo and look forward to unlocking it.

That's one of the appeals of this game for me. My first MMO was WoW. However challenge went out the door a good while back, and now the game has become a pay to win. One of my favorite parts about GOOD MMO's, is working towards a goal. This game still has its challenging content, especially in regards to late dungeons. If you want to get something you have to work towards it. And Glamours is a nice golden jewel waiting for us at level 50 for our lowbie alts. My main character will get access right away after I do the quest.

Overall, I believe SE made the right call. If you are given every vanity system right at the start, and without limitations, then what would you be striving for? With my alts, I got a goal to work towards. And as I level them and collect gear, I can find the right colors and style I want for my glamours for them. My paladin for instance, I really love the steel scale set. But that's right now in the mid 30's. Maybe the Mythril version will be even more awesome. Leveling and seeing for the first time with my chosen dye colors, the crafted gear, I can have a desired outfit by the time I get to 50.

It doesn't invalidate the gear you see as you level up. The art department worked hard to create the equipment models, and I imagine they'd like folks as they level for the first time, to see all the styles for their chosen class/job. Example, casters as we level will have at one point or another, 1 of 6 chest piece type:

Dalmatica
Robe
Halfrobe
Cowl
Gown
Bliaud

I know the first time I leveled this character I most definitely wore each of the 6 items at one point or another. The design team put a lot of effort into this gear, so if we were able to glamour right at level 1, there's a big chance no one would see this gear past level 15 on any char. The people would farm dungeons for the really unique gear, like acolytes, foestriker, etc.

We probably still might see a lot of them gears. Mine however, wont be those at all. My current glamour plan is woolen hat, cotton dalmatica, cotton halfgloves, cotton breeches, and I think it was aldgoat boots. And with Myth now going to be easier to obtain (replacing philo in easiness) I will be able to upgrade from vanya to the myth set, and work on upgrading my weapon. Glamour will allow me to keep my desired outfit. Not too worried about weapon looks though.

Overall, I'm in agreement with SE on making it level 50 to unlock. Having to earn a vanity system instead of just having it handed to you on a silver platter is the spirit of an MMO, and gives players who aren't 50, a reason to get to 50.

yah, communicating with elementals, manipulating forces of nature, instantly healing any non-leathal damage, raising people from the dead, making magical barriers, etc...is all simple things, compared to changing the appearance of clothes.

If you are a conjurer, yes
It's their job after all. Not to work with illusion magic on clothes.

Alright firstly, I don't believe we raise people from the dead. That would make healers into necromancers. I believe when a persons HP reaches zero, they aren't dead, they are knocked out. Raise is basically reviving them back to consciousness. Conjurer's are about nature magic. Just like Black Mages are about element magic, scholars and summoners are about aether manipulation. None of them are about illusionary magic. Illusion magic is often used by voidsents, like some of the leve's where you have to break their illusions to find them and defeat them. More than likely the level 50 quest will be playing off that, which means, it is a type of magic adventurer magic users would not have access too, and would be considered advanced.

SMN / SCH / ACN can cast "resurrection" though, so ... draw your own conclusions. Anyway, we can like this system or not but we can't say it isn't complicated

not sayin that Arenanet is trolling SE, but they announced their wardrobe system which seems to be everything that players want (even previews of armors you don't even have)

This is, quite bluntly, a terrible, terrible decision. Please take a look around at other vanity systems in MMOs to realize the development team's stupidity on this. If someone is leveling a character and they get some armor they really like and want to continue wearing its look, they should be able to. Playing in a look that you like is the entire point of a vanity system.

With all due respect, I neither need nor want SE telling me what I can or cannot do with my funds when it comes to a perfectly legitimate market.

Incidentally, I've always touted Rift's vanity system as one of the best out there. Turns out, it's not the only out there anymore - WildStar's got the whole package, too. A system based around separate costume slots instead of reskinning, no restrictions on class gear (a light armor-wearer can equip heavy armor in their costume slots and vice versa), multiple costume sets, freaking TICKY BOXES for displaying or hiding each individual piece (with the exception of weapons - a bit frustrating for me playing an esper, as I can't even unsheath my weapon)... If only SE knew how to design actually good fluff content. >_>;

[edit] @Daenerys: Good lord. It's like every other MMO out there understands these things better than SE. What, are they living in a box? Do they not understand that it's a good thing to see what the competition is doing and take ideas that work (improving upon them when possible)??

I like that people think this system won't have to do with crafters, and that you won't have to pay gil for prisms. Honestly, if you can't pay 10k gil for a prism at first, where is all your gil going? I sit on 1 mil gil, only thing I've had to spend it on is melding crafting sets/dark matter or repairs. That's the only thing we'll probably have to meld again coming 2.2 unless their "materia changes" are coming out. Vanity wasn't an awesome feature, its just another gil sink, so SE can take my the gil I have nothing to spend on anyway. I don't really care you need a 50 to do it, since most people already have a 50 at this point. The only thing I can think of it is, it might be harder for ps4/steam release new people.

I have about 4 different characters I play. This is the only one that is 50.

Regardless I still don't like the restriction and those who are arguing for it citing a goal to look forward to.

The other restriction in place would easily handle that. The one that doesn't allow you to glamour using a higher level gear piece.

Which makes sense, so why then do we need an unlock at 50 restriction?

Sigh, I personally care more about glamour while leveling then I do endgame.

Will Pvp models be able to be placed as glamours? If so, what if we don't have the required rank to wear the item, yet we still have the item? So far, it explained that if you have level 50, you can glamour level 50.

From a story standpoint, the quest probably will describe the glamour spell casting as complex, even if the games system is not complex. We have not seen the quest yet, so you cannot say it isn't described as complicated or not.

In this instance, you have to work your way to 50 for the first time on the character and do a quest and unlock it. That's doing stuff. That's striving for a goal. This isn't WoW, or some other MMO. This is Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. A small restriction that basically says "Level up and you get this awesome reward!" is not a bad thing.

I honestly don't see what there is to get upset about. 2.2 is going live and playable on the 27th. Two days. The time for protesting is very much over. It's now time to accept, or move on. The system will be in place. Me, I can live with it being locked behind level 50. It means for me, that as I level my own alts, I am saving gil from not glamouring every 5 levels as I replace gear.

You know what really says "Level up and you get this awesome reward!"... end game gear. You know... gear you wouldn't be able to glamour pre 50 anyways.

Some of us ONLY care about the pre 50 glamour ( me) and the time for protesting is never over. If you never voice your concern nothing will ever change. Will it change by release? No, it won't but, that doesn't mean it won't be changed later (potentially).

The only thing I'd care about glamour end game wise is to get one decent looking set of gear I feel represents that character properly... and then quit.

That's right quit, I just don't care about progression n the like.

I might log on from time to time to advance the story some more (through Duty Finder only) but, that's it. The vast majority of my time in game is spent designing and leveling characters and something that helps me level is when my character has a "look" i can appreciate (certainly not random crap from diff sets).

Anyways, frivolous restrictions like this remind me of the pointless and asinine dye restriction that keeps you from dyeing anything that's not crap (ie. anything you might actually wear). Makes me wonder what other pointless roadblock restrictions might be found.

A system with limitations to it's core function is a bad system.

I'd prefer if the whole "something fun to look forward to at 50" was "get access to more and awesome armor models to mix and match at the player's leisure to come with an unique look of their choosing" instead of "you can stop looking like a clown at level 50!" This developer answer is basically Square telling us they designed the system to hold it hostage. I have no idea why they'd do that unless there's a ton of people that aren't bothering reaching level 50 and endgame.

At the moment I'm not interested in the lore behind glamours. If i need to reach level50 with a character and possibly with every single DoH in order to avoid buying prisms from the board market, then the system is complicated.
And the more i think about it, the more all this vanity system seems pointless. Why should we change the appearance of our gears now, when starting from tomorrow we are goin to be busy farming new set of equipment? It could have been a nice feature, a plus. It could also have been something nice to look forward and reaching level50, but the way in which it was designed made it useless.

You can argue as long as you want but this won't change. If you need an award for all of your hardcore gaming, there are plenty of achievements that should make you feel proud of yourself.
You don't need glamours to distinguish yourselves from noobs and casual gamers. We are not talking about nerfing dungeons ...
If you still think you are right, why did SE make the aesthetician available so soon? He's a vanity feature too ...

This was done most likely to assuage crafters who want some profit potential for their crafts, it wont work for long though, if they get too expensive players sitting on lockouts will just level the craft and make them themselves.

Roleplaying.

Not everyone plays the game just to get more gear to do more content to get more gear... some of us like to play video games. Some of us like to chat with people, some of us are completionist, some of us like to play solo, some of us like to craft and work the market only, some like only fishing, some ... i could go on and one.. People are different, so different content exists to try to even the slightest appease more of the crowd.

This Glamour system is useless. First of all its so damn limited. Cant use items that uses more than 1 slots and so on. Second you need crafting or need to rely on crafters. And for us that are not so hardcore on making money in games I guess this can be expensive.
Why not just choose a system that works. A extra tab in the character info screen with custome and all gear slots where you can put customes. And options if u wanna show or not show the gear on ur character at all. Then it also had been alot easyer for using odin armors as costume and so becouse they have armors that uses more than one slot.
Very bad choice with this glamour system. Why not use a system that already works than making a "new unique" system that is totally useless.

Only in the first week. Mats cost are normally around 300-400 gil. The prices will drop in the MB.

I'd like to know if developers are going (or this may be a suggestion) to include an option that allows you to hide the equipment reshaped of all players. The equip style, before the introduction of Glamour, showed a serious gameplay and suited to the setting, cities, npc and so on. Now there are paladins fighting Ifrit HM in swimsuits and this does not do justice to the epicness of the game.
Are you going to introduce an option that allows to disable Glamour globally? This could a be good thing for players who want to see everyone's equipment as it is supposed to be.

I should have given up on the artistic continuity of the gear the day we got Ifrit weapons.
Now we have tutus with tophats. I don't even know anymore.
