But not built around gearing those 9 characters up.
Church's comment is likely with regards to end-game gearing for raids. Tanks have it easy, since the majority of their gear can be worn by both, but if you want to also play a physical dps class or magic user, then you must completely start over, thanks to gear acquisitions all coming from a token grind. This process is as monotonous as the FATE grinding itself, in that 1) it's going to take just as long as it took you to level that new class 1-50 and 2) you'll be doing the same exact thing over and over and over for that whole duration. And to add a few more points which make it worse:
1) AF+1 gear you purchase only fits one class/job
2) All the physical dps have separate armor sets
3) Your myth token cap is still just 300 a week
That said...I just created a new toon myself this weekend :P Since my main's a tank, I got it easy with regards to gearing/cross class skills, so after getting my 3rd class past 20 via FATEs, I already wanted to hurt myself.
This 2nd character is intended for my physical dps class (archer/bard), so I don't mind eventually needing to have LNC/PUG lvl'd up for his cross class skills cause they're a minor additional time investment my tank doesn't need anyways. It is slower than FATE grinding (you lose your mount < 20 and the +50% exp bonus to mob kills and FATEs), but god it's nice to actually have extra choices in what you want to do besides sitting on your ass when no FATE is up.
I'm finding it far more enjoyable, and I highly suggest that anyone in the same boat just take a look at your long-term goals with respect to class/job and see if it's not potentially worthwhile to do the same.

*NOTE* In case anyone chimes in about chain exp...chain exp is no better than FATE grinding imo. It's just as monotonous as FATEs, you just see less pop-up messages when you're doing it. And try as you might, it's nowhere near the same thing as exp'n in EQ/FFXI.
