Role quest in Endwalker worry me. Job quest make this an RPG

I don't expect the role quests to be crossovers from all the job stories. That may be confusing for people that have only leveled one job in a role etc.

I expect them to thematically tie into what the role is about on some level. But I think they'll be more creative than just teamups of npcs from a given role. They may even have a shared theme like the Virtues from SHB, that ties into the Endwalker storysomehow.

RPG defines, to me, a story-based game where you go on an adventure and you have to level up your character. That's all it takes. Removing one specific type of quest focused on your jobs has no impact on its RPGness.

If there was no MSQ and no major side stories, and job quests were all you had left in the way of plot, sure it would be a problem to see them reduced. But they're a minor event in the grand scheme of the game and they're not what defines my character.

What's actually kind of funny is that in the JP version of the game, PLD is just Knight. It's literally Generic Tank Role #1, referencing FF1 more than any other entry in the series. Your attachment is to a name, basically.

It's kind of funny, too. In the SHB role quests the NPC is a DRK, but the quest revolves around a man who was once a knight/PLD for Voeburt. I hate to admit it, but it was much more compelling tale than PLD/Knight quests 30-60. It was also a tale that forced every tank to play as PLD/Knight in the Echo vision. The tank role quests literally forced the class fantasy you're most attached to onto the entire tank portion of the playerbase, heh.

The more people bring it up, the more interested I am in thinking about what they're going to do to implement role quests for Endwalker. I wouldn't think them to really be necessary, after Shadowbringers, but I guess we're getting new skip potions since those are a thing now... and never going away due to making bank off of incoming players who get conned into buying them.

I'd still very much love job quests due to loving the NPCs that come with them. I rather liked the sound of the old mentors for each job showing up in their respective role paths, but I don't think they will either... though, then again, perhaps there might be a branched cutscene like that innroom cutscene that referenced the Role Quest NPCs in SHB. Where, depending on which role quests you did, you could call any of the role mentors or Cylva to the door.

The early class quests are more a lore/community insight of the starting cities than they are about role of the WoL. I'm guessing the role quests in Endwalker might be something similar? Plot arcs that define the next city's community/guilds. A segment of it at least.

I enjoyed ShB quests as they tied a bow on the WoD, who in HW were introduced and shelved so unceremoniously (especially FFXI familiar players who fell into a hype trap on their HW reveal). Felt like SE attempted to right a wrong.

And to be honest, after the lvl80 DRK quest, they've milked Fray for all he's worth.. time to move on. That quest felt like a bad sequel. imo

I understand what you're saying... and i agree that it would be much better to have job quests.... That being said, it would be alot of work to make job quests for 21 different jobs. If each only had 3 quests that is 63 quests.. I would rather them have a very good roll quests than 63 generic quests. I also would rather them put their resources else where

They have 2 years in between expansions to work on this. Not even really asking for even 3 quest maybe 2?!?! 1!??! I get the cost effective reason to just lump every tank into one group but I can promise you no matter what anyone says it is a massive mistake. It just filters down through the community. It is a top down way of doing MMO design that is a large mistake.

The most important thing that you will do in FF14 is pick your job and what you want to play. I picked PALADIN not Tank archetype. Even after posting this comments not even sure how many weeks ago YET again no which one of these FF14 vs WoW videos I watch they are constantly amazed FF14 has job quest with actual story lines.

Gutting this part of WoW was a massive mistake there and it will be a massive mistake here. I get a lot of people do not care right now because FF14 is riding high on subs but it is riding high on subs for a good reason and that is because they have no abandoned the RPG elements of this MMO.

We cannot become so jaded as FF14 veterans that we want everything streamlined to the point for time convenience to forget that this still does need to get treated like an RPG even if you disagree with the writing. I cannot stress this enough. The reason we got Shadowbringers was because the person who wrote the Dark Knight quest line got her chance to shine with an outstanding series of writing. If she had just written Generic tank archetype Quest #1 it would have BEEN FORCED to be generic writing that was boring and covered all of the other tank classes not the struggle between your inner darkness.

My biggest feedback to the developers of these jobs is go out and watch the Youtube videos of EVERYONE praising the job quest in FF14. I cannot find a video and I have looked with people saying this sucks. The only people I see saying this are 7 year vets of FF14 that want to rush an alt job to max.

Honestly, I think doing away with job quests is good. I find it hard to believe that people think the job quests are actually interesting? DRK is one of the few job quests that I absolutely enjoyed. The rest are by and large very generic. Ninja is pretty much Naruto, Samurai is basically any Japanese samurai flick. WAR is a big nothing burger until Stormblood then it becomes a japanese style anime RomCom? WHM is pretty much telling healers to use their attack spells when not healing. MNK and RDM are basically the same story. SCH is actually a bit interesting. Honestly, the emotional impact from the role quests in 5.0 where a lot better then most of the Job quests.

Hahaha, no. No, they are not. They only even have a tangential relation through both being jobs started by Ala Mhigans. MNK focuses around consuming the aether of battlefields to open your personal chakras of Light and Darkness to become more powerful. 30 to 50 is about the 7 Chakras of Light, and you find out about the Chakras of Darkness in 50-60. 60-70 is about Widargelt trying to restart the Monk order and coming into contact with his lost twin brother(or was it cousin? been a while) who wants to kill him and reinstate himself as King of Ala Mhigo. It's a tale of lost royalty full of Ala Mhigan lore, and it pairs nicely with Ala Mhigan lore from BRD's quest line.

RDM is about the Crimson Duelists, namely the last living members. I guess they do have that in common, but many of the jobs in the game do. You help X'ruhn Tia ferret out a band of shady dealers working for the empire who use voidsent and mind wiped clones primarily. It leads you to a confrontation with an ex-Crimson Duelist thought dead. From there it pivots onto why he did what he did, and involves Girl in a Refrigerator trope forcing you and X'ruhn Tia to fight against one of the highest tier of Voidsent in the Weeping City of Mhach.

MNK is more like a Kung Fu flick with a chosen one and what not. Lost royalty to boot.

RDM is more like a magical swashbuckling adventure. They literally only share one similarity.

Anyway, the Rolequests in Shb were okay for me, they told a nice story. Don't know if we'll get those or the classic jobquests for EW but I'd be totally fine with either of those, I might even be inclined to say that those role quests could be the better option since SE could concentrate on creating a few good rolequests instead of watered down jobquests for 21 Jobs.
