To me, it seems a lot of the core mechanics of the game are based on classic D&D (eg if you reduce your stats right down at lv1, removing racial bonuses, you'll get straight 18 scores).
The armour is the same - light/medium/heavy. 'All Classes' can use light armour, as it's essentially just clothing. Restrictions are put in place for medium and heavy armour because you need a degree of training in order to wear it effectively in a combat situation. This is the concept in D&D and it's transferred over to FFXIV. -

I think there is simultaneously a miscommunication, mistranslation, and misinterpretation going on here.
The restrictions most people talk about are the ones on class specific armor, which is very likely to what Yoshida was referring. They don't want a paladin running around in the BLM specific robes, nor do they want NIN running around in flamboyant bard gear. In fact that latter point was specifically addressed by SE when they went out of their way to add DEX onto monk gear rather than just have NIN share gear with bard, which would have made more mechanical sense. They have their own idea of aesthetics and can't seem to articulate what that is. They're fine with you running around in a speedo as a tank, but not fine with a BLM wearing full plate. And y'know what? That's fine! It's their vision, even if it's weird. Emphasis on THEIR, too. There's more than one vision running around the offices, y'know. Of course some of it will contradict.
Costumes are specifically made for everyone to be able to use, otherwise people would complain that they went through all the trouble to get a bathing suit only to not be able to wear it because they're a tank.
There seems to be a huge disconnect in the people in this thread's conception over "practical" and "aesthetic" gear. Aesthetic gear is exactly that, specifically designed for glamours. It's very often cloth, though there are a few armor ones (such as the light steel galerus). It will also often break immersion. I myself tank in a pretty pretty dress specifically because I like that aesthetic, the same reason I heal in a sailor outfit and...bard...in a yukata.
Practical gear, however, is the purple, green and blue stuff with stats on it. THAT is usually restricted.
If you can't wear it, you can't glamour it. I'm not really seeing the problem here. -
12-04-2014, 09:25 PMRenikIt's not a graphic design problem, but a code one, having it made on 2d or 3d has nothing to do with the new parameter they have the add to the whole equipment list, the addition of a parameter requires rework of a full category, as i said programming is not my thing, i just have been scolded to for asking them to add new parameters to an item that was already made, because it requires a whole rework, and i'm sure the memory limitations are a serious problem in this case.Quote:

The conundrum: Players want more varied options for glamour. In specific, many would like to look like a completely different role than the one they are currently fulfilling.
The current implementation: Players can only glamour a piece of gear if their currently selected class/job can equip it. Level restrictions, other roles, grand company gear, etc. provide additional restrictions.
Possible Solutions
1. Let all classes equip all non-weapon gear that isn't specifically assigned to one job(and probably grand company). This... is bad. While it will solve the problem, it will also allow all classes to wear nearly any piece of gear. If people thought spiritbinding was a great way to ruin a party's day in the Duty Finder, just wait until you find that BLM wearing all STR gear. Completely appropriate iLvl, completely useless performance. Or, what about that Tank who, thinking it will give them more STR(it won't), wears a bunch of DRG gear to Ramuh EX and dies instantly?
2. Implement some way to perform solution one without actually allowing players to wear gear that is not assigned to their class. The feasibility of this solution is suspect, as it defies the current system of determining whether or not you can glamour something and would require more memory to be assigned to the data for every piece of equipment.
3. Implement more pure glamour gear that provides the more varied options people are asking for. ie. a set of plate armor, more magey mage robes, etc. This is a compromise solution that can be performed without altering the current systems underlying equipment. -
