Best thing to see this is to search for bards up on the Lodestone. Just sift through until you see a male wearing the gear. That's what I do when I want to get a good look at how armor looks in-game.

I hardly ever play female ... never feels right. Id have to really have something that irks me about the male model for me to roll female. For example in AoC I rerolled to female after a while because I just didnt like the male animations or face model options.
In FFXIV however I started male but used my complimentary Phantasia Potion to switch because I just got tired of all the female only gear looking a lot better. Seriously, who wears swimsuits like that? Couldnt just throw some swiming shorts on hmm? Had to be extra tight speedos over regular swim shorts? Then there is the Snow costume ... WTF? Well ok that makes more sense but still, I wouldve preferred a Lightning-esque looking set for males instead of a costume for a character we care even less about and dislike even more than Lightning. Oh and that very effeminate Bard costume helped as well.
Ill probably change back to male eventually though... soon as we get a few more cool male costumes and if we ever get a decent looking Bard gear design.
I like the way the armor looks on females better. I like tough, kick-ass women. And if I've got to look at someone's ass for hours on end I'd rather look at a girl's than a guy's.
I main a male character, I usually do in online games where I'm given the choice to make my own character. I almost always make a female alt though, FFXIV is no exception. I also got her to ilvl 76 DRG, so I'm not really neglecting her. I made her originally so I could get the female versions of event gear along with the male sets.
In other games where you choose a character (say fighting games) it really depends. I usually end up playing female characters because they tend to be on the faster side (for example in Street Fighter games my mains are Ibuki, Chun Li, Cammy, and Sakura. Side note: USF4's 5th character is Decapre, was really disappointed until I saw gameplay. She might be my new main lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfsKVOuEyow )
In other games where you make a character, it's usually what I think fits best for the story/setting. Mass Effect (or rather Bioware games in general now that I think about it) I always go FemShep, but in like Demon's Souls (a game I need to get back to) I go male.
Simply because I would rather stare at a girl.
made a character similar to my wife and love my wife first name so used it ...and when she play she will make a male similar to me :P
Cause If I'm gonna be Haruka Tenoh I got to be a hot female chick. ;3
Lol, it's funny the responses. Females play female char's because they are females IRL. Guys have all kinds of cool different explanations as to why they enjoy tooning as the other gender.
(on topic because Gamemako asked!!!) I play a male character for many different reasons. I am a male, so that is part of it. I have always been drawn to strong heroes and protagonists, and felt like I could personify with them psychologically if not always physically. I am a natural born leader, and am usually the person taking charge of various situations. I feel like if I put my mind to something, I can excel at it (and usually do). This attitude bleeds into my gaming habits. If anyone I group with is sketchy about a certain fight, I always take the time to help explain. I enjoy being good at things and helping people who aren't as good, get better. I lead an FC, and all the active members tell me that I do a great job. I connect with all of these qualities as a male. By no means do I try to say that a female can't be as strong-willed, only that I can be myself much easier when represented as a male in-game also.
I don't need to be someone else when I represent myself in a game. I am very happy about who I am. :)
Because this character reminds me of my mother.
