How is thos thread still on? They admitted that the graphics are currently not good and are working on it. I still think the LL area design just looks boring but hopefully there's something there that we haven't seen yet.

FFXI only resemblance to EverQuest was in its underlying engine mechanics....for which i have no doubt it was chosen for its resourcefulness and was already spec'd with the PS2 in mind.
as for this game being in its early stages, keep in mind Beta starts in 2 months. what we are seeing now is no doubt whats to come, aside from any polishing of underlying mechanics SE is touting the game with a "ready to go" attitude.
I thought the last screens/game play we saw was when the dev team said "I did not even want to show this, this is far from a finished product" I've never seen them say the game is nearly done and its all in very final stages. I keep reading how they have to optimize it and such unless I am misunderstanding >.<;
If the game is seriously going to look like the last trailer then I am sad. Lol ._. We haven't even seen female Rogadyn in the game yet :(
The last trailer was of older game version then that gameplay/question event you are talking about. The game looks better then the last trailer (which is why everyone says its stupid they even released that kind of content to the public) - the question still remains what is the "best" the game can look.
While I admit the Character's looked a little bland from what I've seen so far, I've got no quarrels with anything else.
Watching the recent Live Letter, the shading and everything else looked great.
Its the lack of shadowing/weather effects. Might also be lack of textures also.
SE has set a deadline. The original release of the game also had a deadline. They spent all their time working on textures and getting the appearence way way up and ignored the rest just to make pretty trailers for the game. The game itself though, it didn't turn out well.
Do I need to see the folds and crevices on my avatar's shirt? No. I don't even notice them and neither does anyone else. So why was time spent putting them their?
People are obsessed with the appearance right now for one reason. They are an observer, not the participating player whom interact within the game's graphically represented environment. When people play a game, they stop paying attention to how pretty things are and start focusing on the tasks at hand. So anything people say now will quickly be forgotten once they begin playing.
I'll remind everyone; the only thing you've seen up to now are incredibly short (one or two second snap shots) sequences of the game. Fit together in a trailer. You can't judge the game appearance on that.
The only noticeable difference is the tail feathers. They have a softer edge in the current game.

Otherwise, the models look identical.
