On Excalibur, 6 tries is roughly 35m combining materia/weapon prices.

You can always farm items. And you know 1/6 is a little under 18% success. I know people who have gone 0/20 on melds that are 22% success rate.

What people aren't realizing is this isn't a gil sink if you just farm the items yourself.

^This. This is all I've been pissed off about. The double melds are my only issue with these relics :( I lost 10 mil. I got 6mil now; with no item.

How easy is 5-20mil for you to get? Maybe I'm unaware on howto earn gil but 20mil is not easy for me.

Then go farm and work for the item. It's a relic for a reason. Not everybody will get one.
