I still play the occasional duel.
If only to tell my opponent to "Suck on my Obelisk" when summoned.
It's a shame if they are looking for something aside from Triple Triad. I know a couple of people at EoFF who have stated that if Triple Triad was in the game, they would play for sure. A new card game might not have the same draw factor.
I see a lot of people getting really angry over a game where you lose cards to other players. I mean, with Triple Triad for example, you save before the match and if you lose a character card *Power Button* or you have a chance to win it back.
If that happens in XIV it would be no different, worse actually, than losing in PvP combat. So I can understand why Yoshida is wary of what he puts in.
That said, I think it's a killer idea. Though their needs to be another use to just playing and trading. If we could get a system to turn them into rewards as he stated then it could be spectacular.
Honestly, the refine card option still seems to be the most viable. Perhaps a different play style for the game and cards but keep the refine card mechanic.
That's why in my proposed outline for the game, I suggested it be like Street Fighter 4 online mode, where people battle for rank points. That way losses don't sting as much.

Betting a match over actual cards, gil, or items would be optional.
Thread needs a quick bump and I have insomnia.
Well, time for my own turn at a crack at the card game post. First of all I'd like to avoid picking a favorite between triple triad and tetramaster, both were good for their own reasons and the reissue of tetramaster with XI was a very fun version.
Also I'd like to post my musings and reasonings for things before I get to the meat of the post.
where/how the game is played:
When playing a card game there are two basic ways for individuals to come into conflict with their cards. Either one persons side vs anothers persons side, or a neutral battleground where cards are strategically placed. The prior is an example of many card games like magic, pokemon, yugioh, that game in .hack GU, and many others. The latter is the way triple triad and tetramaster were handled. So I have decided to go with the tried and true use of a playing field.
how the game is carried out/won:
again there are two usual tropes followed here. The first to dwindle the opponents points/obtain all their prizes, or the person left with the most cards claimed by them at the end of the game. Again the latter is performed by TT and TM, so we will be sticking with a similar method.
What winning rewards:
Now here is something difficult. Nobody likes to be hurt. And it a game where you win or lose 1/2 of all the people that play can be hurt. So chosing what the reward is must be a serious subject of debate. Losing a card after you just perfectly designed a deck would be brutal.
in game useability:
as many users have suggested, in game functionality is a must!
with those things stated, I hope we can understand eachother, let me begin.
SKIP QUESTS IF YOU DONT CARE
The quest: Heart of the Cards (deal with it :D)
Requirements: lvl 5 DoW/DoM
Description:
<npc> of the Arcanist Guild has noticed the material rindium, noted for its chameleon like tendancies and absolute uselessness in the battlefield due to its frail and flimsy properties, has begun to react weird in the presense of monsters. Upon further inspection while performing experiments repeatedly near the same monsters with different patterns and shapes of the material, an amazing thing happened: a rectangular piece of the material permanently binded an image of the monster and seems to have retained its aura. Repeating this experiment countless times, he harnessed the power of several creatures into this previously "kicked to the side" material. Not much further along the path did he notice that the new squares affected eachother when placed on a table made of specific arrays of the same material!
Sensing a claim to fortune from a worthless material he quickly devised and propagated a playing card game, Quinte Quandary! Welcoming you to this exciting new world he hands you a specialized container for these cards, and 1 rindium recatangle. Agreeing to help you are to go collect the essense of a weak monster (lvl 1-10) and bring him back the formed card.
Having brought back the card, he tells you to keep the case and gives you 6 free rindium rectangles, telling you to get involved in the game!
The quest: Hand of the Cards
Requirements: lvl 5 DoL
Description:
<npc> of the Arcanist Guild would like to inspect local rindium sources. Temporarily giving you the ability "Rindium Heart" you are to go obtain a sample and bring it back
After brining back a hunk of rindium you are allowed to keep the the ability you've learned, so long as you continue to bring in the material to be put to use in the game!
The quest: Mind of the Cards
Requirements: lvl 5 DoH
Description:
<npc> of the Arcanist Guild is afraid that a temporary shortage of rindium rectangles will effect the sales and propagation of his cash cow. Giving you a secondary tool (all DoH can wield) He asks you to use it and bring him back x# Rindium square.
Having fulfilled his request, you are allowed to keep the tool, so long as you continue to bring his game glory!
The quest: Feet of the Cards
Requirements: own at least 6 aligned cards (the amount needed to play)
Description:
<npc> of the Arcanist Guild, still further lining his pockets with the money he is receiving from competitions and rights, has yet another proposition. If you can win 2 games, he will provide you with a portable gaming mat! It is made from the necessary material in the appropriate manner only known to him. This mat can be used to challenge players who do not have their own mat yet.
Having won two rounds, you are awarded the mat, so long as you continue to bring popularity to his game!
Well I'm certainly glad thats out of the way. I hope you see how I've tried to involve everyone. SE can balance how many rectangles get crafted out of a hunk of collected rindium, the actual name for rindium, proc rate of ability, etc.
ACTUAL GAMEPLAY STUFF STARTS HERE
Now to what I actually care about, gameplay! :D!! I will try to post this information in the order than makes the most sense, and be fully explanative.
Your card case that you obtain from the first quest is used to hold the cards. There are three kinds of cards: Leader cards, Fierce cards, and monster cards (the difference will be explained later). All types of cards can be held but only up to 5 of each monster card and only up to 1 of each leader/fierce card. Upon opening your case from the menu you will be able to skim through all your cards, marking 6 for your deck, and 2 for equipment. (cards chosen for equipment will provide your character with an assortment of buffs, and you can choose the equipped cards from either your deck or case). You can only play 1 leader and 1 fierce card in your deck.
Obtaining cards. I guess these could be bought or traded (up to SE ultimately). But the focus would be on making essenced cards from blank rindium rectangles. Equip blank rectangles on your pack slot and begin killing enemies. This is how you obtain monster and fierce cards. Normal monsters will cause a mosnter card to form on your rectangle, while NMs cause fierce cards to form on your rectangle. low % chance for normals, and a higher % chance from nm.
Leader cards, can be story/quest based, taking on the flavor of important npcs involved.
The stats and buffs of monster cards are not set in stone, but the effects and stats of fierce and leader cards are. (helping to maintain strategy and balance)
Cards will have 5 basic stats. An element/non, physical attk/def, and magical attk/def. All cards will only affect others above/below/left/and right of where they are played, but can cause a combo, taking further cards. The 6th stat is only available to fierce and leader cards. Fierce cards will usually impose penalties, or enfeeblements to cards it is placed by, while leader cards do the opposite.
Also a strange anomaly on the playing mats have started showing up. expect some surprising results! (explained later)
The buffs for your character that cards provide is small from monsters but more useful from fierce and leader cards. maybe walking +3% walking speed or 1 mp a tic refresh from monster, while fierce/leader can obtain 7% and 2 mpc a tic refresh. (just thoughts, again I'll reiterate, SE can balance it however they want)
So you have a pack, 6 chosen cards to play with, and an opponent, lets begin!
a 4x4 grid will appear in front of you and your opponent. Your 6 chosen cards appear to the side of your mat for you look through and you cannot see your opponents cards. A coin is flipped on screen after the player who has the highest win rate chooses moogle or mandragora it flips to decide who starts.
after turn is decided a player goes first, lets say they play a fire card with stats of 30,20,50,40. pattk/def/mattk/def. You want to take this card over, so your objective is to create a larger difference between their stats and yours. You play an ice card of 32,22,52,42 knowing that you have it in the bag! he has number difference of 30-22+50-42=16, and you have 32-20+52-40= 20! but wait.... he has the upper hand elementally! that gives his difference an advantage multiplier of 1.375, so his actual number that round was 22. tough break, he now has two cards on the floor and its his turn.
The game plays out like that, and of course SE can balance the numbers and effects.
The anomalies I mentioned will change the color of a square and offer bonuses for your cards or change how is played for that spot. maybe nullifying your elemental weakness or switching the stats of a card, or making the cards second highest stat the number of all its stats. These are semi rare and random.
When the winner is decided points will be awarded. Win rate/ total points/ and current points will be kept track of. Current points can be spent on items, while win rate and total points are used to show rankings.
I hope that wasn't too bad, and hope its an idea people dont mind. Again, I'm not gonna care about the small stuff, balance can be done elsewhere, its just the backbone.
