Lupin - make it a playable race!

I... am going to have to agree with this. I've been wondering the same myself. The various hairstyles we have likely won't work for them, so far - aside from eye colour - Lupin faces have all looked the same/been the same model. They're also all grey so far. While I can see their fur being customised to having different colours/highlights/etc, all Lupin are grey so far so it might not fit. In other words, Lupin are fairly limited in terms of customisation. There are a lot of people who already want customisation to be expanded, but this just... contradicts that.


I do think Lupin would be cool as a playable race, but I'm sceptical toward how it would actually work.

Also seconding this. ^ Moogles might have the same customisation issues (unless the tactics(?) version), but Bangaa, Ronso, Burmecians, etc. all looked quite different from each other in their respective stories.

Having only a single template for now doesn't mean they can't expand...

Remember the game had no femroes or male cats available at first!

Yes, but if that's how they're all modelled to be right now in the game, then it might suggest that it's how they're all meant to look. xD How come bangaa so much variety among the characters, yet all the Lupin are identical? The difference between malecats and femroes is that they still have very humanesque faces, whereas Lupin have the face of a beast/wolf. More variety to faces for playable characters without making them full-on animal is achievable, so I doubt the Lupin will be a playable race. I'm pretty sure FFXIV will only allow humanoid faces. But hey, if I eat my words in the future, then I eat 'em. xD

I actually made a long post a while ago about how they'd work as a race and what their customisation options would be. But they got deconfirmed like a month later so I feel like an idiot for attempting.

Why should they introduce any new race at all if we use that logic? A Viera would mostly just mean that numbers will move around, while a completely new and beastly race might get more new players because they had no interest in the other races. In the end if we use the argument of which is used the most, then we should just introduce more character options for the existing race otherwise a new one will always be unnecessary.

Lets look at the Au Ra. What can you do with them? Well different skin conditions..I mean scales but barely anything with that. A ring in the eyes. Like four or so different horns (and with each of them one face) and a couple of different tails and their length. Honestly most of the character customization are already lacking and I had more than enough doubles where I was like "o.o is that me" here on the forum.

What can you do with lupins.

Different fur color -> Hair color
Different way that the fur looks (braids, longer fur, shorter fur) -> Hair style
Different snouts -> face change
Different tails and their lengths -> all the tail customization of other races
Different height -> height slider with all the other races

Just because the recent ones are all looking the same does not mean tha the player character has to be that way too. They could give us different faces with different snouts, make the ear shape different too or their tails. Have braids and other styles with their fur. Differnt color combinations. There could be much done if they want to...and nothing would fall behind the current races because the customization is limited anyway.

Because those bangaas where taken from the FFXII remaster, as Kefka and Exdeath were taken from Dissidia.

As for how they look today, lorewise we could say they gray furred are the ones natural from Yanxia (as the real life gray wolf and the subspecies are/were common in Eurasia and north east Asia).

I agree with you about one point: I don't think SE is going to do anything harder than Hyur with animal ears for new races in the future, but if feedback is worth of anything... here we are hoping!

I haven't read all 40 pages of this thread but with as long as the discussion has gone on (it's now even spawning spinoff threads) I think the biggest issue to me with Lupin or any bestial race is the main story.

Throughout the early MSQ the division between beast tribes and the more human-looking part of the world is driven home a lot. Going through those cutscenes as what is essentially a member of a beast tribe seems odd to me. We even have the Ananta as a beast tribe despite them resembling humans in many ways more than the Lupin do.

It just don't see this as a necessary thing much less something that makes sense given the plot of this game. It sucks, I know some people feel really passionate about this, but I think we are only going to see races more similar to humans.

Yet there was simply no problem with us going through the main story as an Au Ra even when Yugiri had to keep her appearance hidden because she was one. Or we also had no problem going as an Au Ra into Ishgard even though they have a history with killing them. You will also face no racism if you are playing that one elezen race and changing your gender/race with Fantasia is also something nobody cares about (next to having strange glamours).

Beastly races might be a bit more strange but what about Viera? Wouldnt they be strange too, if they suddenly are part of the story and you being the only one there?

There is a marked difference between a humanoid race (which are the 'norm' in Eorzea, thus nobody would even so much as croak) and a legitimate beastrace popping up (who are, from an 'eorzean' PoV, usually antagonistic and, different from the Au Ra or Duskwights, banned from at least 2 starting Citystates, one outright and one more or less implied)

I'll give you the Au Ra weirdness, but that was more a writing problem rather then a lore one; had they just have Yugiri tell us that she doesnT show us her face 'cuz ninja' nobody would have so much as batted an eye.
Pretty much everone not from Ishgard was treated as an outsider in Ishgard and we in particular were only allowed into the city after already establishing favourable reations with them. And even then someone still had to vouch for us. Based on that an Au Ra WoL still makes sense despite their history with Ishgard.

A point that I continuously see being missed is that any new race has to work at the beginning of the story, not just the Tailend of it. Lupin may work reasonably fine after the liberation of Doma and us establishing the same favourable relation we have with Ishgard, but I just don't see them work at the begining of the story; where Beast races are kept at a distance at best and killed on sight at worst.
It took the friggin WoL presence to change people views on beastmen, I doubt they would have trusted us enough to change their minds if we had been beastmen ourselves.

I believe many had pointed this before but:

Our Warrior of Light is always an outsider, always an exception. Since the first scenes on the game.

I wouldn't call this a problem, but the definition of a Beast Tribe is pretty broad on the game. Aside from their faces, Lupins have humanoid proportions, they hands looks like a human's, they feet fits a human shoe (in shape, not size), they wear clothes in hyur's fashion, and their culture seems the same as the Hyur's in Yanxia. Also, I believe the prejudice on the cities is aimed mostly at certain tribes than against non-humanoid people; the Wood Wailers have a beef with the Ixal, the Brass Blades with the Amalj'aa, while even Vylbrand tries to keep the peace with most of the kobold's legions.

So, yeah, I believe a Lupin would be an uncommon sight, but not one related to conflict like specific beast tribes.
