hmm.. i'm generally more concerned about gameplay over story, so for me it'd probably be 12 or 13. 12 was spectacular for having a huge non-linear world to explore, and tons of side content to accomplish. the story wasn't A+, but i enjoyed it. 13 gets a lot of flak, but i fell in love with the battle system. it felt a lot more strategic than previous FF's and was fun even when fighting trash monsters. the battle system was what made me purchase 13, and it did not disappoint. no complaints about the story, either.
FFT or FF6
I spent many hours of my teen years with these classics. ♥
I remember raising a black chocobo and being stuck on the castle gate stage, then after about 20 fails I realized I could RIDE the flying chocobo, epicness.

Also FF Dissidia Squall all the way
Final Fantasy VII at this point have had my psone that i literally begged and pleaded for, for christmas for a while. only a couple games but nothing spectacular, had aplayed a few ff in the past and loved them... well needless to say i was going away with my mom for the month right as game was released... had saved up for it, and she stopped by a best buy and picked it up..i remember that entire month my playstation was never shut down due to the fact that i had no memory card ; ; i was addicted, i was hooked, the story, the classic combat system, grinding materia levels, trying to build up for ruby.. etc it had everything i ever wanted right at the right moment. /spoiler rip aerith
For me it'd have to be Final Fantasy 10. It was the first I played and it was my first real introduction to RPGs. It was fun for me and I actually really got into things like Blitzball and once I learned the ins and outs of the sphere grid I was able to make the characters hilariously powerful. To top it off what made me really like 10 was the final boss fight where you can kill the boss with a Phoenix down. Best.Boss Fight.Ever.
FF2 would be my favorite with 5 as a close 2nd and 7 as a 3rd.
WHY?
Well FF2 had a badass villan the story was fun and like 7 main characters die... Okay don't die as they all come back in the end. But seriously this game introduces so many thinks that are still in the Final Fantasy Lore that came from here. Such as the (summons aeons eichons) or whatever you want to call them. Legendary gear is reinforced here from ff1. And great characters like Cid came from FF2.
FF5 again cool story badass villan who wrecks the world twice and the job system is amazing! <3
FF7 duh sephiroth / jenova / Shinra the materia system need I say more? First 3D FF
Don't think i have one fav, more just favorite parts of the games. As with many others i started with VII, so really like that one, rose tinted glasses perhaps, but loved the summons in it and the final boss is one of my favs( not that into sephiroth, but safer sephiroth looks so cool, i really like angelic characters).
I also like IX, great story, lore and summons, and had the coolest dragoon of the series imo.
Liked X for it's summoning system, prob one of the best in the series( though found x-2 to be really dissapointing, why remove my summons...).
And finally there's XII, such an awesome looking world, and fantastic lore, just sad that the story and characters were so boring(only cool characters were guest and non player characters) wish that the international zodiac job system had been released in english so i could control summons and Reddas(fav FF character).
FFIX. Hands down. I can use special character abilities by wearing certain armor in certain fights? That opens up lots of possibilities for planning! You can LEARN these abilities by grinding out some AP to use even when the item isn't equipped? You sultry minx.
Also: Great cast, wonderful job throwing in the classic FF jobs, and definitely the best summons. Alexander > Louisoix.
Hard to pick one, I like things in all of them.
But If I really had to pick one it would be FFX.
It's the one I think is the easiest to go back to, I cleared it numerous times.
I liked the story, the cast, the locations, the clothes, the music, the races, the videos, the battle systems, the summons...
Just such a great game
Final Fantasy VII, the best RPG of all time!! The best soundtrack, best story, best characters, monsters, battle system, materia etc.. & world map. The closest thing to perfection in a RPG game I have ever played, and likely ever WILL play.
It was made in a time when games were made properly. They were full, complete games. Not purposely cut back or scaled down. Imagine FFVII being made TODAY in 2013... it would have so much DLC.. Those weapon monsters? DLC. You have to pay extra for them! knights of the round? DLC. Golden chocobo? DLC. Golden saucer would have half of the games reserved for..... yes MORE DLC.
Then there would be FFVII-2 and FFVII cloud returns etc..
Thank god this game was made before games became crap.
FFXIV is good and the best FF since 12 but, it's no FFVII!! They will never make another one that good.
Final Fantasy 9 is my favorite. I love the setting, I love the characters, etc. It was the first FF that I actually finished (went back and finished the others after) so it has a special place with me. I would absolutely love to see an HD remake of that game.
If I had to choose only one, it would probably be FF6. It has that total package of top quality music, graphics, story, characters, and world. It's a masterpiece.
I liked FF7 a lot, but I still consider it overrated. SquareSoft released a far superior game (Xenogears) at around the same time, but it was largely ignored because they put all their marketing behind FF7.
But I "favorite" several games in the series for different reasons.
I like FF1 because it was the first one I played.
FF4 because it has such an engrossing story.
FF5 because of the huge job system.
FF9 had Zidane, my favorite hero of any FF game. Also Dagger's orange pants...
FF11 was the one that I spent the most time on, and it's where I formed so many lifelong friendships.
FF12 had a huge, immersive world and a good streamlined combat system.
My favorite is FF6, followed FF13, and FF4.
My fave is still X. After that, I'd probably go with Tactics and then XIII-2. You might be able to talk me into throwing IX into the mix, but not for the top spot. X captured my imagination and ate my life like no other FF game before or since, and I've gotta say that I'm pretty pumped for the HD X/X-2 re-release.
As an old man of 33, I've been playing since Garland tried to knock us all down. That said FFIV has been my favorite since I played it on my SNES back in 91 as FF2. Having not only the Paladin job, but wanting the Dark Knight job is a reflection of my love of that game. A very close second is of course Tactics.
War of the Lions. I loved Tactics and the new translations and added features made it even more awesome. The story was amazing from beginning to end. I have the original PS version, WotL for PSP, and I'm currently playing the one for iOS.
Mine is probably FFIV. I am a serious sucker for plot and character development. Between Cecil's magnificent transformation of dark to light and the plot involving the best friend being evil for most of the game then repentant, this game tops my list. (Skipping plot points for spoiler reasons.) Character deaths and "deaths" are heart wrenching. I loved the unique background of each character and overall just loved the game.
Final Fantasy VI is by far the best.
So many twists and turns in the story with great characters. And there are so many of them. Each one has a great story. There are very few moments that stick in my mind, but most come from this game. Setzer getting his airship in the World of Ruin. Kefka double crossing Ghestal, killing all the Espers and destroying the world. Celes and the opera scene. The Phantom Train. Sabin and Edgar had a great story about who would become King of Figaro. And of course the ending. It was just so good. Amano did the artwork, which is a huge plus. The music was the best in the series.
Basically, FFVI was a masterpiece. It was by far the most impactful game on my life.
Oh yea, forgot all about Chocobo Dungeon! Playing as a Chocobo protagonist is fun.
I'm going 4 I have fond memories of staying up until 4 or 5 am playing and beating it at my now 6 years deceased grandmother's house when I was 17 and living with her for a while
Its FF7 for me. Its the RPG that started it all for me and I can play it over and over again. A very close 2nd is Xenogears all though not a FF it is a square RPG and it had one of the best plots and combat systems.
The entire raid on dollet was awesome. That said IX is the best. Zidane was hilarious, Garnet Til Alexandros XVII is my favorite female in the history of Final Fantasy, Freya was the coolest dragoon ever, and even the silly Quina Quen was a fun time. The only character that I didn't care for was Amarant.
FFT. Complex story, heavily involved, was the one of the few games ive ever played where i actually talked to (yelled at) the screen constantly.
A very close second would be FF3/6 because Kefka was the best villain in FFdom.
s/n: I seriously think, story wise, FF7 was one of the worse FF in the series, as it was overall boring. Just was something new at the time of gaming. But i couldnt even play it twice (which is bad since most FF ive played, ive played multiple times)
I'm pretty sure I have played nearly every FF game ever made in nearly the same year it was released (there are a few exceptions, XI, X-2, and XIII-2). That being said VI, IX, and XII stood out for me. VI is just a masterwork of storytelling and XII challenged the tactician in me to find interesting ways to alter my teams AI for any given encounter. IX was just such a fun nostalgia ride.
On the other side of the spectrum is FF XIII. I tried replaying that a few months ago and man....I didn't last an hour before I just gave up.
Only because I finished them, I'd say it's a tie between X and XIII. X because it seemed to strike the right balance in tone (not too campy, not too dark) and allowed a good deal of customization with the sphere grid. XIII was almost unfairly underrated. I liked that the story took priority for most of the game with things opening up late. Too many sidequests can be distracting to the main storyline.
For me it's Final Fantasy 6 and 4. Which one is better would be a really hard call to make. After 6 and 4 I would have to show some love for 5 and 2 simply because they are underrepresented right now. But really all of the FF titles were great in their own ways. I even enjoyed 13 a great deal, Sazh is still to this day one of my favorite FF characters.
I Really Loved XI, yeah it was mmo too, but made so many close friends!
The game was also challenging back in the days, I still remember the joy after my first Dynamis lord kill in 2005... ah the memories and emotions!
They had a way to make you have strong bond with other players, more then any other game I have played :D
I'd have to say mine is a toss up between 7 and 9.
7 had a great storyline and really pushed the 3-d envelope back in the day and had awesome side quests/mini games... AND BEWBS. BIG ANIMATED BEWBS.
9 had an amazing storyline and I loved the skill system in how you learned things. I also enjoyed the optional movies and mini games. What really made 9 stand out to me was the combat system. The fact that you could combine characters skills to get cross class abilities like you could in chrono trigger. I had tons of fun doing the side stories too just to advance the character story of all the random characters. Really had a lot of depth.
I liked FF8 for the down to earth and real world aspects (Galbadia being like a real world town for example) (Squall being at a school, albeit it was scifi...). For years rpgs were always set in fantasy worlds. It was a nice change until I put in the second disk.
Main series? Toss-up between Final Fantasy 6, due to its world and how every character was the main character of your group (not to mention 16 playable characters = win), and Final Fantasy 13, due to how well done the plot was (until that Deus Ex at the end), the battle system, and me liking the characters.
Spin-offs? Final Fantasy Tactics without a doubt.
FFXIII series. I love the story and gameplay styles, I also loved all of the characters (Main ones that is).
In order: XI, IX and X
XI because I loved the whole party set-up. Also helped that I had an excellent LS for a good couple of years.
IX because the setting and characters were larger than life.
X because it is a beautiful game (minus the laughing scene).
Final fantasy III: change jobs class :3
Final fantasy IV: Difficult game and boss strategics.
Final Fantasy X: Blitzball, music, rikku :D
Final Fantasy Tactics, same like FFIII, change job class, leveling all of them.
Final Fantasy 7 because:
I learned English that way. Yep, the truth.
First game that made me cry.
I loved the world.
I loved the characters.
I loved the story.
And a few other reasons. :p
Close second: Final Fantasy 12
Close Third: Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy 6
- Great ensemble cast of characters. There was a lot of diversity in character types, and except for a few outliers (Umaro, Gogo), they all had great stories.
- No "main" character. You got to build your own party without being forced to take a certain character. The story also did focus entirely on one character with only minor development for other characters, like in FF7 or FF8.
- Solid battle system. I liked the Esper -> Magic system, and I liked that each character got their own unique ability. The characters ended up feeling unique, but customizable.
- 4 person party! I miss this (although at least FF9 had this too). ; ;
- The World of Balance -> World of Ruin change halfway through the game. I loved the dynamic that created and how it not only changed the geography and feel of the world, but every playable character reacted differently to it. It really helped to flesh out the characters.
- Kefka. He may not have had the most depth out of the FF villains (I kind of feel like Golbez would fit best for that), but he was definitely evil. I liked that we not only got to see his rise to power, but also his decent into madness. He may have already had one foot through that door to insanity when we first met him, but it was pretty awesome to see him really jump off the deep end.
Also it was the last 2D main FF title and was the best looking and best sounding of the bunch.
Mine is FF6(NA FF3) I still injoyed the others 7-10/X-2, I have 12,13,13/2 as well but never finshed them, just felt that some thing was missing from them
