I'm having the same issue. Finally had an instance started after waiting an hour and then crash! 2 hours later I can't get NA/EU servers up.
Seems that EU/US servers are made from some cheap chinese leftover parts thrown to dump around 7 years ago by blizzard.
*twiddles thumbs due to intense boredom* If only there was an epic wonderful FF game for us to play on this long holiday weekend (for US players anyway)... hohum...
Still nothing, and no word in over 15 hours...
They clearly knew something was wrong. Last night at 8:30 EST I got a message in game saying "An emergency maintenance is about to begin" so I logged off. So it took them over 8 hours to even acknowledge a problem, and now nothing but silence for 15 hours? This is really getting on my nerves...
Notice when the JP servers have issues they're corrected almost instantly? Coincidence? No way.
If you can't get the servers to populate, just restart your client completely and start spamming num 0 again as per usual.

There is also always a big news story on the start screen with regard to the JP servers but nothing about the NA/EU servers. Just a little bit of news would be nice. Update, possible time the servers will be back up.
Silence is definitely NOT golden in this situation.

I just logged in on the ps3 version.. After trying all day. When only the NA/Eu servers were loaded. I finally got in a queue... Maybe it was luck..

Still says couldn't retrieve NA/EU servers list for me. I logged on briefly about 3 hours ago, and now can't get back on after my getting dc'd...
I'm just getting fed up with it. I work all week and want to play this at the weekends and since last night the game thinks Europe does not exist.
Oh well D3 PS3 comes out Tuesday so I might not even bother subscribing to this. Paying even more money to see a blank screen, or even when I get my characters up, a screen which says the world is full try later then <BOOT> out I go. NICE.
I really don't understand why Square Enix doesn't do what we all want them to do. Kick AFK players so the rest of us can actually PLAY the game. If you are AFK for +2 hours then you get kicked, simple as that. Maybe when everything is back to being normal we can allow people to be idle for days, but right now, when thousands of PAYING CUSTOMERS want to play the game, let them play and remove the thousands of slackers that are not playing.
Had the error list > few hours later was able to log in > kicked trying to enter a building > now no list again.
Think i will give up for the night now :p
I don't understand why some players get to play and are never seeming to run into these errors yet I can't seem to play one day without having to sit and play the login game for 2-3 hours. Like, who do I have to bribe at SE to be able to play? Is there some extra feature in the mog station that I can buy where I get special login treatment?
Based on the info we've recieved, I would say that given that it is the weekend here in the US, the servers are just totally full. Yoshi stated that the server' capacity was his oversight, and they are trying to fix the issue now. Really when you think about it, the servers are probably so close to capacity at the moment and everyone is trying to get back on. However, I do think if that's the case, then the log out AFK's argument really stands here, as well as fixing the que, but as Yoshi said they are addressing that as well. So until they get more servers or figure out a way to raise capacity without overloading, I'm not seeing much of resolution until those are handled.
I tried for about 1.5 hours straight to finally get in. Plus then log in on my daughter computer for another 45 minutes. We did play for 3 hours. So more then half the time total was just trying to log in. FTW SE!!!
Been trying to log on about every 5 mins for the last 3 hours unsuccessfully. Same problem as original poster. To see if the worlds were up per se I proceeded to try and create a new character only to see what worlds were being shown as available. For the NA/EU server it shows 'Unable to obtain world list' too. This is just silly. Not sure what the great complication was. I've been through about 6 'more ppl logged in than expected' mmos before, but this one apparently learned nothing from others and is possibly the worst stress testing failure in my book. Game is awesome though, hopefully if I ever get in today that'll make everything worth it.
Just something I found that might put some people at ease.
Tho I think the mods should be linking this, not a player following the dev team.

Square should answer some questions at least. Why are they not kicking AFKers? It's a simple question they can answer. All we have is "we know it sucks, maybe it gets fixed on wednesday"

Unable to load NA/EU servers, and even having 1017 trying to log into JP server. GOing over the 7 hour mark.
I play on Aegis server, and live in USA. I am constantly getting the "Unable to update NA/EU server list..." AND I also get that message for the JP servers every other time I log in (always one of those messages)
My question is this: do I have to completely quit the game client or can I go back to the main screen and keep trying "start"?
So far my only success is completely quitting the client.
lol now I have the list to only get the 1017 boss again man square is the worst company ever.
I don't get the 1017 error message. It says that "... the World is full. Please wait until an opening is available and then try again." How exactly are we suppose to know when an opening is available (if there is a way)?
Sereiously guys.. SE is poor in seriousness. They said that will improve the data centers 3 days ago.. and.. the problems are here. since the release day... the problem is still here and they did nothing to improve or solution. Only they are earning money with the fee and pre-orders.. but they aren't doing nothing to listen to the customers (gamers). They are stealing our money. Please... a GM request this post and please.. give the money back to the people.
Absolutely terrible RE-launch. Great game if you can actually get in and play, but they are so completely INCOMPETENT and setting up servers that I don't think I'll be sending them any more monthly fees. Very disappointing RE-launch.
That *is* the 1017 error message. Note the yellow "1017" in the lower right corner of the error window.
Also: There is no way to know if there's an opening available. Even if there were it wouldn't last more than a fraction of a second as hundreds of people are attempting to log in in that fraction of a second. Your only option is to hammer the log in servers as hard as you can and hope your packets hit the server in that fraction of a second.
I was thinking... this forum doesn't work... any gm appeared and nobody from the staff of SE say anything never when we post a thread of any critical problems... I think that we are wasting our times creating thread in this forum :S

I can understand that SE is incompetent when it comes to determining how many players would buy FFXIV and play (its obvious due to the server congestion etc).
but what gets me is....are they going to extend EVERYONES 30 day access for these periods of UNPLAYABLE "service"?
I for one am taking note of how long i cant play a game i have purchased and WILL get back my lost time which = lost $$$$ = SE 'stealing' my $$ on a game i can't access.
Pull your finger out from behind SE and at least post up some kind of post under TECHNICAL that has a solution AND that also answers some of our concerns (LIKE MINE, which i assume many are wondering).
Put yourselves in our shoes....we only want answers and promises that you WILL keep..
SE just posted recently they will extend everyones free game time by 7 days including 1.0 players starting Wednesday after maintenance that day. They are creating new and better servers to host everything on since the Canadian company that offered to host the servers under delivered what they promised which is why everything keeps crashing and having issues.
