I think anyone who goes out of the way to be upset about same sex marriage/dating should really take a few minutes to look and see what their problems are. Really now...
I waited years to marry my husband in XI and here, its not my fault 70% of the male population like to play miqos!
Also LBGT community I love you<3
Speaking of ingame marriage in general, disregarding whether it's opposite or same sex marriage, I think people read too much into it. It's just an additional activity that some people might find fun. Just like not everyone cares about gathering or crafting, seasonal events, relic weapons or grinding dungeons for Darklight pieces or housing. I personally find all the non-battle activities available to be a lot of fun, but I also participate in adrenaline driven content as well.
I honestly thought SE knew better by now. Looking at some of the NPCs in-game I thought SE was avoiding discrimination rather than promoting it. :\ Was proud of them for that.
I suppose we're just going to have to deal with REAL LIFE religious views effecting what we do in a GAME that has nothing to do with it.
Disappointed and perhaps lost some respect for them... I'm sure there are plenty of other games out there I could play that treat people equally.
Nuinn, your a star!!! and i love your Siouxsie sig!
This really becomes a problem if there is (which there always is) somekind of incentive to getting an ingame marriage. If I get somekind of xp boost from playing with my spouse, or an equipment that makes us teleport to the other's location, or anything like that; then it should be available to everyone regardless of the association. If they are really uncomfortable with calling it marriage, then allow people to become blood brothers/sisters or something that gives the same advantages.
I'm gay and don't feel like I need to fight this fight in the game. But I don't want some priviledges to be unavailable to me because I or my partner don't want to play a female graphic.
There's no reason not to. Marriage in this game isn't tied to any real world benefits (tax breaks, power of attorney, etc.), so leave the backwards "us" and "them" ignorance out of the game and allow it.
Man, this thread is sooooo early 2012. Now people wanna talk about it? How stupid.
I completely agree with you.
Though I haven't lost all hope. Maybe Square Enix will come to their senses and change their stance—swiftly.
As many others have said before, either do it right or don't do it at all. Doing it half-heartedly in a discriminatory way is the worst option of all options out there—unfortunately now that the question has been asked and an answer has been given, that option doesn't exist anymore. Make it right. Now.
Why the need for marriage at all? Its a video game and regardless of what other think/want it isnt up to anyone of us. Now maybe SE dosent believe in same -sex marriage thats fine thats their right. It also means that they dont have to add what you want or I want. This isnt a game breaking feature and honestly it dosent need to be added into the game. Personally SE has more to worry about than how many players want marriage, same sex marriage or traditional marriage. This topic is something that should be worked on in the real world than a damn video game it is pointless. Maybe if those of you that support or dont support this subject would spend more time and energy on this issue in real life and less time on a damn video game board bitching and moaning about it, something would or wouldnt be done.
War, you raise some interesting points, and you're right, it isn't a game breaking feature. Yet, they've already plans for it and it's to be part of the content in the game, however minute. Therefor, if they do take a stance on what direction the content will go (which, as you said is their right), it would be unwise to think there wouldn't be some sort of backlash towards said decision.
So logically, they would either pull the plug on the entire thing, or implement ethical equality.
SE may indeed have more to worry about, yet that doesn't push this topic completely off the list of things to think about.
You say we ought to spend more time trying to work this out in real life. Yet, if we can't even discuss and come to a beneficial conclusion for all parties in a mature fashion on a video-game board, is there really any hope?
There are a lot of things in the game or being added to it that arent game breaking, like housing, chocobo raising, gardening, etc. But, they add more things to do, something MMO's do better than some single player game where none of that would matter at all.
Like someone said, if you're worried about having same-sex things in your video games. Go play a Bioware game.
Two real male humans, in love in the real world, playing with digital avatars that represent different genders: HETEROSEXUAL
A real male and real female human, in love in the real world, playing with digital avatars that represent the same gender: HOMOSEXUAL
Only on the internet, folks. =|
I know this would be an unpopular solution, but if they are worried about problems in different parts of the world, maybe they can implement servers with specific rulesets in each region.
Presumably, the game is already checking if the two objects/character instances are of the same gender should same sex not be allowed. It wouldn't be much harder to add in a server check to see if same sex unions are accepted on a server or not. They can guesstimate how many servers should allow it and how many shouldn't depending on region, and then say what the server's structure is at character selection. If one or the other becomes unpopulated, then merge them together while keeping the larger server's ruleset.
Only if I can have a gay divorce.
On the plus side us roleplayers could always stage a wedding for you~ I bet it would be way cooler then one they made ^.-
Then they should just cancel the marriage idea all together. It's not like there are no female users playing males (either for RP or so that they don't get harassed by libido happy guys), or vice-versa. And it's not like there aren't gay couples playing the game as two characters of different genders. I also haven't really seen any grossly inappropriate PDA in game, so I don't even see why this would offend anyone, other than because they think it isn't right/moral irl!
Alternatively, go with my first suggestion of just making it a "blood brothers" type thing so that anyone who duos regularly can get whatever benefits are associated with it. I don't think that it's fair to give certain users an advantage that others in the same situation cannot get.
I just hope that they announce their plans for it and whatever bonuses are associated with it before ARR actually comes out. That way I can redesign my character to be a female lalafell or something and get married in game to get the bonus xp or items associated (this is based on my experience with other MMOs where an advantage is given to married couples).
On a final note, keep in mind that, in the 50s, we'd be having this discussion around the fact that interracial marriages are not being allowed.
On a topic like this, that has been debated for years and years in FFXI, and now in FFXIV, I'm finding hard to add anything that hasn't already been said a thousand times over.
So I'll just say this. I'm gay, and I'd very much like to participate in the marriage aspect of the game with a character of the same gender, that is all.
The best solution is to accept that other people have a different viewpoint and want constructive dicussion on the topic. If you don't wish to participate, please remove your self-righteous self from this topic. Thank you and good day.
Marriage shouldn't be in the game at all. All it does is invite real world problems in to a video game. These debates are better had in the real world where they actually can make a difference, not just litter a game people use to escape reality with socio-political battles. Real life problems should never have to follow you in to a video game and it is sad that they do.
I am all for gay marriage in the real world, and if SE really HAD to add marriage I really wish they would have silently made it all encompassing without singling out gay marriage....cause look now what we have. Their handling of this situation opened up the doors to allow all the real world strife to flood in to it and it no longer becomes an escape, just another socio-political vehicle.
They had to options to either omit it completely or just add it with no restrictions silently. As they have already screwed up number 2 I feel its best to just scrap it while they can to prevent ruining a game, where your real life really shouldn't matter, and you should be able to "live" in a world free of the chains tying down society for at least a few hours of your day. We have all day everyday to battle politics, but a video game is the one escape a lot of us have. Is it too much to just slay dragons and get loot anymore? Why is marriage necessary in a game?
Treat the game like a country and put up a referendum for Same-Sex Marriage in the game. Booths can be set up at aetheryte camps and whatnot. :D
Straight characters can have marriage and gay characters can have "civil unions". Haha just kidding. Like others said it would've been better if they silently dipped that in there instead of making it a public issue. Besides, I have friends who are coupled IRL (male/female) but both choose to play female characters. It's a fantasy; let any two characters get married to whomever they want.
Maybe they just want housing/tax benefits in-game. :p
I dont know what your trying to say with that. But anyway I hope it either gets allowed or the idea gets scrapped all together so everyone is on equal ground. I just wanna play the game. Im hoping that one day I can log in to this forum and see threads on Crystal tower boss strategies, chocobo raising screenshots, noob questions and loot tables oh and also complaints of course tho not as much as now haha this is a GAME forum after all
Why does it have to be a big deal? they could have put it in and not even said they did it so unless you are looking to have a same-sex marrige then you wouldnt even know. i understand the divisiveness of it but just like having religion its self in a game it is a fantasy game, not reality. i really wish people would stop taking this shit so seriously....
Hello folks,
This topic has been brought up a number of times and Development has been made aware of all the thoughts and feelings, from both sides. I am going to lock this thread, now, as this has been a hot topic in the past, so we are getting no new opinions.
Thank you for your thoughts and support, but some of the posts may need to be removed after we do a full review of the thread.
