I want to express my thoughts on this matter, but after going through all these discussions, I find myself at a loss for words.

It's simply a video game, that's all.

You mean like she keeps attacking people for not being trans and also just like she keeps attacking white men ?
Is that only in the game ? Oh wait it isnt
Just as sane as telling people that they should be fired for not being trans.
I will continue to call out the VA for being a terrible person as well as making an already annoying character even more intolerable.
If that's going to be viewed by others as me "attacking" them, then so be it.
They don't deserve the amount of shielding they've been getting.
In all likelihood shes at least contracted till the end of DT, but knowing Japanese companies they'll drop her as soon as its all done. JP doesnt really participate with "Gender Ethics" all too much and tends to just NOPE out. If she as unprofessional as folks say Darwin will do its thing weed out the stupidly and other companies follow suit... its just how it is, leave her be and let the world do its thing...
Reminder that Susan Calloway lost her job over liking Tweets, but Sena gets away with inciting hate and calling others racist.
She's been streaming the game on Twitch, off and on. Would it be "very sane" to show off Yoshi-P's character?
Bridget, who came out as trans in Guilty Gear Strive.
I'm all for trans people getting VA roles, but only if their voices actually fit. (e.g. non-vocally passing VAs staying voice acting people of their AGAB or voicing trans/nonbinary characters, vocally passing VAs voice acting people of their gender identity)
It's hilarious for someone with a non-passing voice to complain about a trans character who in their prior appearances passed so flawlessly that they had to repeatedly say "...actually i'm a boy" (It's complicated, go look up Guilty Gear's lore if you want to fully know what i'm talking about) not having a trans VA.
No, Sena. You don't fit the role so stop thinking it's the industry's problem.
When Calloway was actually loved by the community for singing the song that marked the end of 1.0.
Well unfortunately "doing your best" in this context doesn't really matter if your "best" is something bad that people hate.
Because if you had a shirt ingame that said those instructions to say....people of a ethnic group - you think people would not react harshly if they saw you wearing it? The reality if folks can play it off as not being a big deal because they know folks would not do it and if they did then the full force of the internet would come down on them. To assume otherwise I feel would to be out of touch or very naive.
I suspect this is a situation where SE is trying to take the high road. They realize they have a large population of the LGBT community in FFXIV and don't want to be seen as ignoring Sena's plight; the reality is Sena seems like a super toxic person and most folks will probably take her word for it if she claims to be a unprovoked target of dislike/hate. I think SE is just hoping that they can end her contract quietly while she is on strike on the grounds of that she had to be replaced because the character needed to be aligned with the patch cycle. For Sena it is likely a win as well because she can then raise her social media profile and simply claim SE is transphobic and didn't support her; getting some support as the underdog abandoned by a souless corporation.
SE just wants this to go away and it seems unlikely Sena is going to let the discussion die in obscurity because they want the exposure.
this stuff will fade away
also to Square enix may i suggest a Story beta testing with you player base so you can get story feedback this would avoidance the whole problem in first place
the second suggestion is to was what i think was a better approach to dawntrail
would introduce Sphene reincarnate as a orphan have warrior light focus on find who she is by look in different villages is have scion focus on more Wuk Lamar her goal. have it so sphene as lost child and WoL tried find where she came for. only help scions when they need move to a new area or need help. you could have conflict between the child Sphene order the drones and soldiers stop, this a line they story tried find who Sphene the child is. this would make Wuk Lamar and Sphene would then a line to end also the fact that they miss focus on krile story aswell
Its all fine in a privilege position when stomachs are full and roof over someone head, but people do need to be able to feed their families and have a safe warm place to live. Not all people there have savings or a backup in place such as partner having a job as they live hand to mouth Not all industries has unions, not all employees are union members and when they have to face into circumstances such as mass unemployment, lack of job opportunities in deprived areas and the state not offering enough support, people are desperate and good on them. It is more nuanced than that! I remember all this in the 1980s in the UK with Thatcher vs Scargill and the destruction this crap did to people and families. Then there are many who are not into unions full stop and its fine on either side of the position.
In the UK i am pro union btw as without e.g. we would never had the concept of the weekend.
Because the rich are still human beings - they have just as much right to live as everyone else. Even the concept of "transphobia" does not immediately equal hatred; though it may be in vogue to assume such - a phobia is a irrational fear; should we also sacrifice all anthrophobes..to...satan specifically for some reason?
Even if the shirt said "sacrafice all who hate to satan" I would still disagree with that; I generally oppose the death penalty in all forms; I do not believe in the notion of pre-crime so the notion of being ok with killing someone as a act of self-defense because you believe that they might someday do you harm leads to a pointless cycle - its like someone who is cis wearing a shirt saying likewise about cisphobes.
Negative actions breed negative consequences. It sounds horrible when you consider the notion of trying to reach people might not work and is not without riskes; but if you are successful then the results are only positive; but harm will only breed more harm.
Trying to equate "Eat the rich" which is synonymous with anti-capitalist/ taking money away from rich people to sacrificing and killing people is fucking wild. -IQ take here.
Last I check "eat the rich" didn't include killing people.
Being against death jokes means we're transphobic now?
I make some dark jokes on occasion but it's always with me as the subject. Calling death on others, joke or not, is still a big ol' nope from me. Doesn't matter what group of people you're talking about.
It's also kinda ironic how Yoshida says to not send death threats (the topic of this thread), yet you're in here saying death jokes are no problem. By that same logic, maybe the death threats were actually jokes so we shouldn't worry about those right?
I remember the advertising of trusts, not as a waste of development resources but as a new option for those single player fans who are anxious about playing with humans but still.....want to play an MMO.
I remember during the WOW exodus when converted content creators gave half-baked comments during the lead up to endwalker on liking the sympathetic villain approach (Which was arguably never a constant to begin with), then suddenly odd rewrites and retcons occur and a sudden last-minute sympathetic villain in meteon appears.
I remember the awkward live letter where they tried to defend Yoshi-p's desire to include NFT's (How did that end up going btw?).
I remember Yoshi-p's comments regarding classical jobs and how he wanted to move away from them to attract newer audiences.
I remember Yoshi-p wanting to make the game more like fortnite and subsequently adding a low-effort fall guys crossover.
I remember online Yoshi-p interviews where writers lauded the success of endwalkers subpar patch content despite them being dead on arrival.
I remember the unusual announcement of Xbox support despite the clear mismatch of audiences.
I remember Yoshi-p suggesting plans to make South american data centres in the leadup to Dawntrail as if the expansion would be so beloved for it's cultural representation that it would overcome the country's excessive videogame taxes, economic woes and the expensive nature of monthly sub costs on top of expansion pricing and overpriced cosmetics.
The point I'm trying to get at is that from my own perception, the FFXIV team seems to be constantly trying to attract new audiences rather than consolidating it's current playerbase. This is the nature of big corporations even if it's dishonest Yoshi-p will say whatever it takes to project the illusion of prosperity to a crowd of wide-eyed suckers (Myself included).
This is why when I see Sena Bryer, I see somebody who has been typecast, not for their talent to play the role in game but for the publicity and exposure to LGBTQ+ gamers they would bring from being trans. Like really genuinely, even if you love everything about her performance please understand that an exceptional portion of people find it lacking compared to every other voice role in the game, whether it's down to her acting talent or poor direction the result is still subpar.
This would also be barely worth mention if Sena as a public figure did not keep posting bigoted things on twitter to inflame people, the professional response would be to humble yourself, admit there were some issues with the performance (Even if you don't agree, sorry but life be like that, inflated ego's do not make you many friends in any industry) and springboard to bigger better things with that exposure and experience on your resume.
Not....trying to frame your own audience as a secret racist cult as a gotcha on twitter or whatever that smile comment was supposed to be, like really....just really...
So are you saying that you should only take offense to a call to violence if the call can be targeted to you personally? I want to be clear because if thats the case then it sounds like the arguement is that unless someone is trans; they should not care about the plight of a trans individual which I think we can agree that boiling a person down to one characteristic as a justification for harm or offense is still wrong. It kind of sounds like your saying the shirt is a dogwhistle; which again offends multiple different groups - three I would high-light would be likely christians; transphobes and people that do not condone violence.
To speak to Xylira's comment I think thats her point - the rules of engagement are not really rules if both sides do not follow them.
That was exactly my point. The people that bend over backwards to defend Sena's awful behavior also go out of their way to take any shred of criticism directed toward Sena as being harassment motivated by what they perceive as hatred of a minority group. They're not doing it out of any sense of principle or values, they're doing it because they only care about defending their side.
And to be clear I'm not condoning actual harassment from or to anyone. I just find it extremely distasteful how one sided and hypocritical Sena's defenders are being.
That's the part that really bugs me.
The whole "us vs them", "black and white thinking" nonsense. I honestly feel silly that in every topic on this I feel the need to reiterate that I'm LGBTQ myself, lest I'm labeled transphobe too - and even then it's happened!
The hypocrisy is so staggering - within our own LGBTQ community we are actually pretty quick to call out problematic people be they artist, drag performers, or other public figures, because:
#1 Within the community, we can't and don't get labeled homo/transphobe, so we don't fear expressing our non-LGBTQ-related values and following a moral code we believe in and
#2 Those bad public apples represent us still and so they bring unneeded negativity to our whole community.
Yet, when controversy related to an LGBTQ person spills outside the community, it's like some people's moral codes cease to exist and they MUST defend the indefensible, just because it's "our people". (And half the time the defenders aren't even LGBTQ themselves!) No, honey.
Bigot is a bigot is a bigot, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, whatever.
Also, would actually transphobic people be mouthing off on the forums, if Sena wasn't such a toxic person stirring controversy and negativity? No. So why should trans members of the FF14 community have to come across and see this mess? They shouldn't. And they wouldn't, if Sena knew how to behave like a professional adult human on the internet and keep her nasty, rotten opinions to herself.
I don't follow her twitter and all I've seen have been posts of her linked by other people, so there's probably more, but she's advocated for biological woman to lose her job, she's called the FF14 community racists and transphobes, she's thrown shade at Imane Khelif during that whole mess at the Olympics, she's disrespected Christians (which I am one, shocker, I know, who knew gays can be Christian too?) and much more.
Don't defend the indefensible.
The guy that originally saved the game is barely there anymore.
Only "company man" Yoshida remains. Gotta deal with that reality now.
As much as I enjoy some culture war slapfight, I'm honestly more worried about the global gaming landscape lately and if/when Square is going to catch some heat.
I don't like Wuk Lamut as a character, not her VA aspect (though her voice acting is bad). Attacking or harassing the VA and the staff is unacceptable and inhumane.
But, Wuk Lamut's VA (Sena Bryer) is quite self-center herself. She got high ego and bad mouth about those who disagree her ideas. My friend in social mention that she even tell the Bridget (from Guilty Gears: Strive) voice actor should step down because the VA is not trans and not fitting the character (Bridget is trans character in mentioned game).
There's rumor that Sena is invite to cast the character without audition by the English director for DEI hire. Take this rumor for a grain of salt.
Another 17 pages of Wuk Lamat/Sena. Will have to browse when i get some free time lol.
If anyone sees this post after the last expansion for the game gets it's last patch:
Hello! The game is probably good now. I hope you're having fun with it.
Are we forums better now too? Or just as absurd? I'd love to know!
Sincerely, some poster from 2024
woke is on it way out trust me. i must also remind Yoshi P the importance say you once said that the goal of mmo is to make the player the hero you said this after 2.0 came out Wuk Lamar fail this test she stole the main character story you reduce the main charcter aka the WoL to side character in her or his own story realize the fans are just remind you of your own saying
W
he even state that mmorpg have fail to make the player be hero of story after 2.0
see dawntrail as lesson and a way remember they lesson for 2.0
