I give mine to the person with the cutest portrait.
Tank and healer trade comms as should both DPS.
This has been the general I’ve followed up until now. Only exception is if someone else does something that makes an impression, like DPS using a well-timed support ability most people forget, or a tank saving the dps with one of their ‘throws mitigation right at your face’ skills lol.
I do comm DPS depending on their job and how well they did. Elezen take priority though.

Portraits were a mistake. I feel like I made the right decision by turning them off when loading into instances.
I only com DPS if their chars look cute ;)
I’m a caster main and had it a few times that I was dogpiled for using LB on trash packs.
Most often from tanks or healers and sometimes from melee who go off the rails if you do that.
I guess others had that experience too so I usually only do it if there is no melee in the party.
On the topic:
Normally I get the most comms as a melee dps.
You can zip around as a blm playing perfectly or rez the party on rdm and get no comms.
Then you can have a bad day where you stand in every aoe possible and get the pity commendation. It’s really random.
It’s best to just not care too much about them.
Tank gets it if they don’t instant pull or use a countdown,
Healer gets it if they rez me quite fast,
DPS gets it if they know how to play their job.
Other than that it goes to:
People who said hello > funny people > good portraits > female Miqo’te / female Au’ra / Thightlander > Lalafell > everyone else > Furries.
I usually give comms to whoever's portrait I like best nowadays tbh
A lot of people also just leave instantly before you can comm them
Honest to god, wish they would change it and let you comm more than 1 person or even a button to commend all
It is almost a subconscious decision. Comms go to tanks and healers because in most cases (outside of 24-man), that's who you are waiting for in order to get into the dungeon.
"If you don't have a nice picture, you don't get a com."
- Me
I used to default my comms to tank if I am on healer; or healer if I am on anything else. Now, though, I just comm the cutest portrait.. provided they didn't get their ass kicked repeatedly in the run.
I only comm dps if the dungeon ends quickly enough to notice mechanics being skipped
I commend DPS all of the time, typically because my commendation criteria are pretty specific and more often than not it ends up being one of the DPS.
Unfortunately with the given player population, it takes me a while to do the weekly commendation challenge because often there won't be an eligible player to commend.
If a RDM saves a run by spamming VerRaise, you can bet they are getting a comm from me.
Mostly because I've been there and saved a run and got squat because my icon is Red instead of Green or Blue.
I'll comm good players, period.
Sure a nice portrait helps, same with a cute or funny name, or a nice glamour. But playing well means you get my comm.
And if you're nice in chat that usually locks in the comm regardless of role.
I have a decent number of commendations for my playtime, I had some 1100~ at the end of SHB. I started maining DRG (previously DRK main from HW-SHB end) and my comms are currently sitting at 2350~, a large section of which are from me just doing DRG stuff in dailies. Some are from me leveling healers and tanks, sure, but nowhere near the bulk of them since the start of EW come from those roles.
if I get any comms, its usually in aurum vale as BLM
If a DPS uses mitigation and utility and decent rotation I'll appreciete them more. Otherwise it goes to whoever has best glamour.
I main SAM and get comms all of the time. Tanks and healers might get more, but it makes sense. In most content, good deeeps just makes the dungeon go faster as opposed to keeping people alive, which tanks and healers do.
How can we give comms to dps if we are not allowed to use tools to see how they are doing dps wise?
/s
I comm whoever is cutest. Unfortunately, healers and tanks are the cutest to me most often. Be cuter. That's my advice.
once i went pug dungeon as rdm, last boss healer and the other dps die, so i rez healer and heal tank for a while
not a single comm.... that hurt a bit lol i though for sure at least i will get one
I'll commend the DPS if they're playing particularly well and not sitting on their CDs, using feint/addle, avoiding deaths, etc.
i commend dps often but only when they dont die
I get comms as a DPS all the time.
Especially in PvP.
Having a DPS meter be built into the game would both allow good DPS to get more commendations when people see them doing well as well as inform the DPS that do 40% less than the other players that they are probably doing something wrong without someone needing to violate TOS to tell them. It completely baffles me that we don't have one to this day.
I give comm to dps when they know their skills. That includes using mitigation skills. Unfortunately, it's VERY rare.
I regularly get three comms as DPS in dungeons maybe because I'm a Roegadyn XD?
Yeah as a ranged DPS i used to get yelled at if i so much as thought about touching the LB, have even had vote abandons after doing so, so i stopped.
Started again on trash awhile back but its hit and miss. Last night for example, tank had pulled everything to the door point, they were all grouped up nicely and being held in place and had no reason to move the pack any further, so i lined up LB, popped it..... the tank moved literally all of them out of the LB! Just a few feet too the side so they were out of the blue line.
I got bitched at for popping the LB and worse, not cancelling the cast when it was clear it wasn't going to hit. (He moved when there was only a second or two left)
Stuff like that happens a lot, normally put it down to just being a bad tank or trolling.
Yeah having played WoW for ab it years back, can understand why they dont want meters, but def agree that works against DPS performance visibility.
Job balance can also work against us there though.
Sometimes you can pop burst on a large pack of mobs..... and get out DPSed by a WAR popping one or two AOE moves lol
if im dps i comm the dps, if im tank/healer i comm the other.
Beg for a commendation, and you shall not recieve.
Impress me or the Miqote with a booty pic for a portrait is getting the commendation.
The quickest way, I've found, to get DPS to get the coms is to be a tank that has a portrait like this.

Usually I get 1-2 a run for dungeons, but while leveling Warrior with this joke of a portrait, it was pretty consistently 0. Clearly, the healer is taking their comm elsewhere.
So OP if there's anything to be gleaned from this thread it's to appeal to the gooners.
(Commendations don't mean anything btw)
Lmao name fits the post especially since you insult people calling them (Gooners) for wanting commendations for preforming good in an instance. These people probably are interested in the rewards you can get from them and they might want to try being a mentor. So idk why you said they don't mean anything??? that's a rather obvious lie.
As long as noone is giving comms to Lalafell I'm in.
Commendations are so rare anymore. I give them when I can. I'm not sure how it is anywhere else, but in NA, when that dungeon ends, people leave immediately so you can barely give them, let alone get them. I don't have the mount. But I honestly don't need them. It's just that when you play well or do something that a normal group wouldn't do and it feels ignored, it tends to make me not put in that effort again. I still do because I want to be as helpful as I can. Its just these anti-social tendencies are super common now. Hell, in most groups, people don't even say hello anymore. Ironic considering it was drama on the Japanese servers to not be respectful upon joining a group. I'm not saying take it that far, but stop being so anti-social.
I know this was a give dps more coms post, but honestly, I barely get them for the above reasons. Healing, tanking, playing well, being friendly, nothing brings them out for me.
I generally comm in the following order:
1 - Anyone who was REALLY good at their job.
2 - Anyone who made the experience fun, regardless of whether they were a great player.
3 - First timers and sprouts
4 - Anyone with a really great portrait (NEW)
5 - DPS
6 - Healers
7 - Tanks
8 - Whoever is still in the instance by the time I can open the comm window and a click a name
I mean, I get quite a few commendations as a DPS, but it depends on the circumstance. If I am a DNC and I give good buffs and it is noticeable, then I get one or two. If I am a SMN and I get a good raise in and save the party, I've gotten quite a few that way. Hellz, even as VPR, I would get commendations (but I think that one was bc of portrait tbh).
I know with my own mindset with commendations, I normally always comm the tank or healer first. My reasoning? The instance kinda needs those 2 playing a bit or else nobody will get through (or at least without great effort). If a tank doesn't press mits and relies on the healer...well we could find ourselves in a total party wipe situation due to mana or just too much damage. If the healer doesn't press their healy buttons, dps will go down to raidwides or mechanics and make the runs last way too long. With dps? Well, you could press the basic combo rotation and never press anything else and still, besides a little bit longer of a dungeon, you probably wouldn't know too much. If the dps does stuff or leads the part (by being a mentor/guiding sprouts/teaching mechanics) without being a jerk about it, then ya they get it 100%.
OR
You are just charismatic and funny in a dungeon/instance :D Nothing better then someone coming in and making me laugh during my 500th run of Crystal Towers~
I did some runs as dnc got coms the most I ever got as a dps in trials 6 coms
My last roulette I had a monk who did some absolutely eye-watering DPS to the point we were skipping mechanics. You bet he got my commendation.
