It’s a lot less that than don’t ruin a good thing with your tantrums. I’m not defending SE in my post. I’m encouraging them to invest big in their game so we benefit instead of going, “eh they’re going to throw a huge fit anyways let’s just keep milking them with a downgraded 10 year old engine from a 14 year old better looking one.”
Ask for changes, but be supportive. How hard is that?
As I stated, I simply do not know if it's possible or not. But since a lot of problems seem to come on specific features that are currently optional, I don't think is that much of a crazy thought? I mean:
-For eyelashes that changed shape and density (much more denser now): currently we have a toggle option on "face features" to choose if we want darker lashes/eyeshadows or not. So maybe an optional "more eyelashes/less eyelashes" to me sounds a plausible thing
-For eyebrows that has changed in density, there is as well a current option that allows you to have thinner or thicker eyebrows, both in the eyebrows section and in the face features section (at least in female wildwood elezen, as example)
-For lips, not talking about the shape of lips (that could be maybe an extra option nº instead of a direct change), but the texture and color, I believe that we could keep the old texture lips as the "nude" option, without lipstick. Since all seem to have a lipstick now regardless...
Definitely it's not something that would fix every single feature, but this tweaks may help to get the appearance of the older character easily, but again I don't know how easy or hard would be, it was just a thought I wanted to share...
I'm an artist and I have done real people portraits, so I can see how a face changes a lot with every little thing, maybe not the overall appearance from affar, but little changes on eyebrows, eye size, nose heigh, can make a difference on someone being recognizable or not, as well as the facial expression (like looking neutral, or angry, just changing a few millimeters the lip corner or the top of eyebrows) (sorry If I overexplained)
"They look fine to me" "They look the same" "They improved"
Cool but you're not the one going to play their character? It's not up to you to decide if they're the same or not, it's not up to you to decide if it ruins another's experience of the game, your opinion doesn't matter because this is not your character and you're not the one going to stare at them for the next 10 years.
Again, this is not a charity, this is a product, people can and should voice their opinions and dissatisfaction. It's so weird how some formed this parasocial relationship with a multi-billion dollar company, that they think that you're not allowed to voice any dissatisfaction or you're a "child". Apparently, adults are supposed to just consume everything without question. Yes they want to give you something you like so they get paid, not because they love you.
They're here to deliver a PRODUCT, because they want money and satisfied customers give that, they don't do it because you're their friend. It's their job to give you a product worth your money. It's not your business to police others who are paying customers on what they find acceptable. Stop policing others about their feelings.
Both improved graphics and retaining the characteristic looks can exist. Even the benchmark page says that this isn't final, in other words, feedback is needed at this stage before everything gets finalized.
Why should I be supportive of a graphical overhaul I didn't ask for that ruined my character? The eyes, lips, eyebrows and skin look ugly now. Where's the graphical upgrade? They've downgraded my character in every way. If I showed this to someone who doesn't play this game and asked them what they thought of the new graphics, they'd think the new improved graphics are shown in the right picture.
So yeah, SE, here's the change I'm asking: roll it back the way it was.

the thing with the moonkeeper fang probably comes from the wish i've seen several times over the years to remove that triangular bite they have. you can see it from below with an open mouth. but removing that also means to remove the reason its there to begin with. to be able to enhance the fsngd to be longer... now couldnt they achieve both nowadays with the money, experience and tech they have? probably and the game makes enough money... they absolutely should.
i just wanted to point out thats not a mistake xD
Yeah I disagree, if you want to be uncompromising that’s your call but it makes you far less reasonable and more likely to get ignored. I’ll be honest too, if that’s your request the odds are slim given that chances are they won’t throw however many hundred of thousands of dollars they’ve already invested in it. You could’ve use your time better and ask for things they may actually do instead of cross your arms and pout.
Excuse me for using your character as example please... But the main differences I see are: color of eyebrows (that can affect how the face expression is perceived), the light on the eyes that is a major issue and affects most currently, I can see a change in the eyelashes density and texture, not a big one but it's there, the lip gloss is also a texture thing but I can't see a major change in her lips shape. Also the jaw is a bit lower and softer but very very little, it may even be just the light ticking our eyes.
In my opinion on your character -again just to give an example, hope you don't get upset- I believe that if color/shine on eyebrows, eyelashes and lips were changed you may like her again.
But I also thing most options should be like new options or toggle on/off in case other people do like the new versions...
They have messed up things that you can't fix with Fantasia. Unless they make these things a new Option in the Character Customization Menu.
Is this supposed to be Sarcasm?
I've said it many times and I'll say it again.
The people working at Square Enix aren't as good as many may think they are.
Look at all the copy and paste Armor (and recently they even have put a copy and paste Glamour in the Cashh shop), Mounts and even Content.
The bad Character Customization and Armor Coloring.
No head gear for Viera for years.
And now they have ruined our Character Models with this poor attempt to make things better.
I'll say it out loud. These Guys have to go. Make room for more skilled people. And by these Guys I mean Mr. Naoki Yoshida and his overrated Devs who are responsible for this Character Customization mess.
I know, Mr. Yoshida is praised as the Saviour of FF14. But now he is about to ruin this Game for many Players.
We shoudn't be supportive of such poor work.
I would like an option to not use updated graphics.
I couldn't reply yesterday because I hit the post limit, so apologies for the delay in a reply. But putting glasses on in the morning does not add dimples to a previously dimpleless face. And every mouth has it so there's nothing I can change with a fantasia to fix it. If I wanted her to have dimples I would have used face 2 when I made her (which, ironically, has lost its dimples with the update), or have described her with dimples in any of the things I've written about her.

I have an edit ready to go if this update goes live with no changes. It's not her, but neither is her face with no tweaks. Again, if we wanna talk about compromise, I'm willing to compromise the face shape and the lips being fuller (even if it's pushing a beauty standard that I don't appreciate), but adding a whole new feature (dimples) to a face that never had it is where I draw the line.
If they manage to fix what they broke on the eyes, the lips and the eyebrows in just over 2 months, it would be passable.
What I don't understand is them going through with a graphical overhaul which for the most part seems to be a downgrade across the board. What are the improvements this change was supposed to bring us? Having glowsticks for ears? Exhilarating. Every change so far seems to be either unnecessary or straight up made something worse than it was.
The problem with compromising and shipping it as is for now - is that it will cement new features for new players to use and then what? You are going to take it away from them? Some things are obviously bugs, but some are just shapes changes which could be seen by someone else as appealing but they currently ruin/change the existing characters. That is why it is important to backtrack.
Is this here where I give feedback?
Never post here but I wanted to give my two cents regarding the update.
I'm happy with it. Small thing like the keeper fangs and the beard stubble aside I like the updated stuff.
I would like too keep the updated stuff with little tweeks here and there.
But I'm also not too attached to the look of my cat so I guess I can understand some of the negative feedback.
Guess it would help if square said that the feedback was heard and they will work on it but please don't roll back the update because of it.
There really is no compromising or ignoring this, this is impossible to look past
it straight up looks broken, there's no fantasia or "quick fix" or "lighting angle" to fix this face
it will forever be an error if left in this state
seriously what the hell even is that
This kind of screw up is not something you "just get used to after a week"
Right now, all I'm asking is : please people there is an "official" thread. Don't multiply topics all over the forum.
My honest feeling about all of this is people at least need to make a fair comparison - taking photo of the character in the same lighting and camera angle - before saying anything.
The outdoor lighting in benchmark somehow keep changing and the character will randomly get wet and look totally awful. This could be genuine mistakes or bugs and probably will be prioritize for fix.
The new graphic update is inevitable. It's okay to make criticism and request for changes but be fair about it. Moreover it will be even better if you are able to explain in details what and where in the new graphic differs from the previous one and how it made you dislike them. Including the facial types in question would be even more helpful I think.
Thank you very much for your support! I completely agree.
For me this is a double sadness, because I'm very passionate about gpose. I know how she looks like in any light, I know how to direct the light on her so that her face shines. I know every feature of her face. I'm ready to accept the loss of some small details. I understand. Although, as I already wrote, the upper half of her face looks great, I’m happy with everything.
But this ugly defect and complete loss of facial features in the lower part of her face... It's just... Will I be able to look at her without despair? Will gpose bring me the same joy as before? I don't know. It’s as if everyone will set sail to explore new lands, towards new adventures, and she and I will try to accept the fact that she was disfigured by an evil plastic surgeon. Is it possible to find a compromise here? No. I know I can't.
I think people are doing a good enough job honestly it's very coherent very specific in what people want. I've listened to what other players have had to say whom the changes affect the most and to me it seems to be only minor tweaks are necessary.
People are going to have feedback and I believe it benefits the team working on the game to know what the player base is thinking.
I don't think anybody doesn't want the graphics upgrades nor do I think our dev team is the type to withhold graphics updates just because of a few complaints.
They will take in the feedback and make adjustments - may take some time but now is the best time for this to occur.
I definitely agree that a lot of the complaints and comparisons aren't really a fair one to one side by side comparison. I've seen so many I entirely different lighting situations and people are just like well rip my character. There are a lot of legitimate complaints also though that I do agree with so don't take it as discrediting everyone. I just think people get riled up and it spirals into an echo chamber of "new graphics bad"
In reality we are going to have to accept that some small things might be different in order to move forward with the games graphics. Things that should not be compromised on are things like the keeper fangs, or whatever is going on with elezens facial rig when emoting etc.
On the other hand I encourage some to give it more of a fair chance try all the different lighting and spin the camera to see how the real time lighting affects lips and eyes because it makes a bigger difference than you think. They mentioned at the fan fests that small tweaks might be necessary to get the original look back. I'm not saying the benchmark is perfect by all means there definitely needs to be adjustments. But it's certainly not as doom and gloom as these forums make it out to be.
Even if you're still not happy try to be more constructive, be specific about what you don't like instead of saying "wow my character is ruined" or "rip my character" This tells the devs nothing.
I agree. Although, like you, I find that some of the criticisms are justified, some of the comparisons are rather over-reactionary. Sometimes people post images with a comment that suggests their character has changed completely; then you get to the screen... And it's hard to see the changes in question.
(... Which is a problem in itself).
I have the impression that, for some, nothing could have satisfied them in the sense that they are so attached to their character's physique that the slightest change becomes blasphemy.
Just so there's no need for unnecessary vindictiveness: I repeat, some of the criticisms are well and truly justified.
There is not enough space on the forum to post here all "before and after" screenshots that I took from dozens of angles and lighting so different that you can’t even imagine. And also a frame-by-frame benchmark.
I say this completely seriously. It will take several dozen pages.
I know how and what light can affects.
I specifically attach screenshots with lighting in which the defect is most visible. Because I want this defect to be seen by SE, is this logical? I can attach here screenshots where she stands back to the light and there is no defect at all. Oh, she's beautiful there, of course. With a dark flat face.
What's the point of this? What's the point of giving advice to "turn the camera and change the lighting"?
In the cutscene, how do you turn the camera? In the game, I also have to constantly turn the camera away from the light, right? I will have a wonderful game, the essence of which will be “rotate the camera so that the character does not look like a freak”, thanks for the advice.
I think SE should only address obvious execution errors and leave all stylistic choices ie "my nose is different" the same, and see how many of you leave.
Heck, add it to the exit poll "I am unsubscribing bc none of the new options allow me to make a character I am happy with".
Unless something's obviously uncanny, outright missing from before and could easily be a toggle (glossy lips for example), disproportionate/low textured, etc it's just the new visuals and I suspect a loud, tiny minority are the ones who can't get over it. And I also think you would have hated anything regardless.
To be clear, I think criticism that is specific, supplied with non edited photos that are clear and undeniable, is fine. I think slamming the dev team off the bat, threatening to quit the game, is (as described in another post) makes you seem disingenuous, as though you wanted it to fail from the get go.
I'm not in the camp of "roll back everything the way that it was" because I think that's unfeasible and also disregards some genuine, much-needed improvements.
That being said, some of the "technical advances" seem more like mistakes or crunched corner-cutting, especially where the character models are concerned. For instance, applying one clan's skin textures to the entire race, or every race now sharing the same UV map (great for modders who wish to make cross-race makeup options, but not necessarily great for facial definition in base game.) Not to mention the literal bugs I've seen with hair textures, neck seams, etc.
One of the biggest "mistakes" (using quotes here, because I don't know if it's an actual mistake) is that it seems like the subsurface scattering (SSS) was not mapped properly, and instead extends to the entire head. This is why characters are looking waxen, self-lit even in low light, and why skin tones are changing per environments (ie. characters looking green in the La Noscea character creator portion, because the skin translucency is cranked up and is drinking up green environs instead of reflecting light properly.) I think this would also explain why for the female raen, horn colors are changing depending on skin tone, why dark hair changes 5 shades lighter depending on hairstyle, and why viera ears are turning into glowsticks.
There was a really good thread on this here.
A lot of people are saying "it's just lighting," and one, that is an issue in itself but two, a glimpse around the forums shows that features themselves have changed. Sometimes drastically. A lot of the times poorly.
I made a graph about lighting and skintone. But I also made one about features. And this is just my one, singular elf.

I think myself and most others would be happy to compromise. I would even tolerate the jank candle-effect on the skin if I could just have my character's lips, nose, chin, and eyes back. It's okay if he looks fine or better to others! But that's not (my) character who I've played, gposed, drawn, written, and commissioned for years ):
Considering I left two games that "updated" characters already, I have zero problem leaving a third (have never been on the sunk cost train). That said, given Japanese players are complaining about many of the same things, I will stick around long enough to see if they make changes.
I'm in the same boat, I have over 100k screens of my character, unchanged since 2.0, never unsubbed from the game, using the same face as you and I know exactly how it's meant to be
I can tolerate loss of detail or the weird lighting even, but that facial sculpt is completely destroyed
Its warped, disfigured, that mouth is just straight up wrong
