Unpopular Opinion: SE Is Not Obligated To Add New Jobs Every Expansion

As long as that dev time is going somewhere else

I'm okay with it.

But most of the time when SE cuts content work we don't end up with anything special or extra to show that dev time went anywhere else so it's understandable to be upset.

As long people keep giving money they won't change a thing.

What may happen instead is they'll add all the classes they can muster before that part of their team just devotes itself to maintaining the overhead of all the classes.
If they make as many as they can manage, managing them might take all their time.
There is no promise that branch of the team would be able to devote their time to much else other than updates/upkeep.

And this is aside from the fact that the team that designs classes is separate from the PvE team... so we shouldn't expect to see resources go to PvE after they're done adding jobs.

If they slow or stop adding new jobs to prevent overhead the last thing they'll probably shift those resources to is new player character models, which also add to overhead going forward. Would be neat to see more options for existing races though that doesn't involve new models to fit gear onto.

Even if they run out of ways to implement new classes they can still add them thematically. Use the same mechanics if balancing is an issue and have new animations to make the class feel like a new class. Summoner=Necromancer with all egi reskinned and new animations. Red mage=Rune fencer or Corsair. 30+ classes in Final fantasy history. Balance nightmares do not have to be a limiter when you can create a new class category under the summoner category with even quests and achievements to unlock the new glamour class. Glamour is already one of the most touted boons of the game. Do an awesome challenging solo questline to vanquish the necromancers and secretly become the new shadow leader and unlock necromancer summons and spells/animations that fit the glamour class thematically but are reskinned summoners. Even allow Blue to be a version of the white mage that uses the same gear but has animations associated with blue mage spells.

Solo quest lines to unlock new animations for weapon chains to differentiate people is also an option. Do not want to do the jump shoot attack as a Machinist? Allow us to choose from a list of already created animations. Glamour and flavor are quickly becoming the way for people to differentiate themselves in a game that tries to balance theme and homogenize abilities for tanks/dps/healers.

Yeah but players aren’t obligated to buy new expansion.

They could cut every single feature of the game and turn the expansion into an FPS if they wanted to. It comes down to whether people would still buy it.

They add jobs because people like them.

Majority of players wouldn’t see that as an acceptable trade. More likely if they skip jobs one expansion it will be replaced by something that adds a similar level of gameplay as a new job does.

Surprised they haven’t cut back to one job though.

Players might not be obligated to buy an expansion when there are no new jobs but I'd expect people to atleast have some common sense. They have a whopping 4 people to design and balance every job in the game so it's gonna reach the point where they're either unable to balance them properly or have to design every job according to a bland template to make them easier to balance, something which we're arguably already approaching.

Orran Durai is an Astrologian (Astrologer) in Tactics.

I'd be fine without getting new jobs if they actually bothered fixing the longstanding issues with the existing set.

Chains of Promathia was the best FFXI expansion and it had no new jobs.

A whole lot of little things and big things, with a touch of early 2000 nostalgia. It just starts with randomly seeing a cutscene in Deff tower of Bauamaut shooting out of the sea and declaring the harbinger of the apocalypse is coming for you. Then you see the now all too common tropes of a mysterious character falling unconscious who's somehow tied into everything... a hooded and mysterious group/cult... etc. Then you're immediately thrown into these bizarre worlds with what seems like alien creatures walking around some endless void. That's just the first mission set. This may not sound like the most impressive thing by itself but keep in mind you're just blasted off with this in a game where you're normally mindlessly killing lizards to level in a bland desert for 100+ hours.

In terms of making a memorable impact, it's up on the top 3 games/expansions I've played in my life.

Another unpopular opinion: You're absolutely right. SE is NOT obligated to add new jobs every expansion. Just like how they're not obligated to focus on PvP, focus on raiding, focus on Ultimates, Savages, 4-man dungeons, character models, world building--heck, SE wasn't even obligated to phoenix Final Fantasy XIV 1.x into 2.x, they could've just scrapped the whole darn thing, cut their losses, and pursued a different project all together. SE is not obligated to connect with its fanbase. SE is not obligated to make their fans feel like they care. They're not obligated to listen to anything we tell them. They're not obligated to follow their own Terms of Service.

But they choose to, and that's all that matters.
