GTX680 And Losing DirectX Device

I tried 301.42, 301.34 and 304.79 and they all got the same DirectX error within 5 mins of running around Uldah. Ended up going back to 301.42. Then i turned off DoF (AO was already off) and turned General Draw up from 8 to 10. I haven't crashed at all since the change. So either the drivers are indeed screwed with handling DoF or like someone else said, the "Boost Clock" causes it to crash. Turning my General Draw up to 10 causes my GPU to stay near 99% utilization, and therefore keeping it at the highest clock speed so it never throttles down so i wonder if that is the real problem after all. I'll turn settings down later and see if i crash with lower clock speeds.

I don't have silverlight installed.

My UAC is set to not dim the desktop.

Hardware cursor is turned on.

tl;dr turning DoF off solved my problem.

General Draw 10 prob slows your framerate ALOT... basically it tells FFXIV to render the game at double the horizontal and vertical resolution and then downscale it to your screen. Have you tried General Draw Quality= 9? Should still push the card but give you smoother gameplay.

Also i have UAC disabled and play in windowed mode, so its not that causing the directx error. Its a known issue with the game it has trouble with reacquiring the device once it loses it (just poor programming nothing can fix this except the new 2.0 engine)

And to the person who keeps bitching that nvidia isnt listening, the Nvidia forums were hacked. Thats why they have been down (investigating the breach). Nvidia does listen, and this problem is pretty much all Squares fault anyway. Even is the device gets lost more with the 600 series, any decently written game should be able to handle it.

After a month we know it was hacked. Shame on nvidia. Should have said it before. I wonder how many people got fucked because they got emails and passwords from those forums. I hope they get sued. I'm sick and tired of these companies saving pennies on security and screwing us all the time. Same with Sony, Microsoft etc.

Yeah i tested, it seems to be only DoF, maybe AO as well but i never used that. The clock speed changing doesn't make it crash. Nothing to do with which driver you use. Have not crashed once since turning DoF off.

And yes, the game crashing over DirectX is SE's problem but what's causing it to do that is Nvidia's problem. It's not like i'm alt tabbing here, i'm not even in full screen mode. My old GTX460 and 560Ti never crashed due to this problem. So since it's only the 600 series, yeah it's Nvidia's problem.

I ordered my GTX 680 for 2.0/A Realm Reborn. I was hopeing to replace my GTX 570 until then and record the CS of the Seventh Umbral Era. And you guys would of found a way to run the game without crashing by then.
So should I just wait until then? And one more question, do the benchmarks still work with them?

No. If you turn dof and AO on, it will crash. Other than that, it works great.

It is important to address that GTX 460 is currently unplayable. It is weird that I played FFXIV for more than an year with no issues and stopped at the start of the paying cycle. I decided to reactivate my account three days ago and nothing works anymore. Already tried a lot of drivers, with or without AO and/or DoF and nothing. The support seens not to read my messages, they read only the subject field, the answers are ridiculous and I will canceal my account in the next days if the issue continues. Shame on you square, shame on you. You dealing with your loyal customers like trash. Very disappointed.

If I might put my 2 cents in on this, it's SE's issue, I have an I7 3770k with a MSI GTX670 and get the crashes as well, but when i get it, it also locks up my intel chip monitoring system, I have noticed that both my gpu and cpu ramp up overload then no dx detected only in the bazaar areas, Both intercooled as well, niether ever above 35 C. Both also have self overclocking, which they both go to far at certain points, so it's not a gpu or driver issue, cause my CPU wouldn't be getting nuts, no biggy I just have to restart my monitoring back up. It's something with this engine and self clocking technology that's not meshing right. That's just my opinion I'm no tech.

They're making a new engine because they can't easily make changes (according to SE) I think this includes this bug. Hopefully 2.0 will be better, but doubt this will get addressed before that

Read here. You see the "No DX Detected" message because your display driver has encountered a fault and thus locks up forcing WDDM to perform a reset of the driver by forcing a restart of the driver.

If you are using software that constantly increases the clock speed of the GPU or your VRAM past the officially posted clock speed, it will continue to increase the clock speed until it forces the driver to hang. You then experience a display driver reset and the loss of DirectX. If what ever you are using only "increases the clock when under heavy load" you need to make sure to remove or disable it. When it's under heavy load that is the time it's most likely to be negatively effected by overclocking.

And everyone, please stop saying that because your GPU runs at a few centigrade above room temperature that it's not the problem. Your GPU runs exactly the same at 35C as it does at 95C.

DoF definitely affects it because i crashed twice in a row yesterday leaving Uldah on my chocobo from the chocobo stables npc. The cutscene has DoF on by default (i've turned it cutscene effects but havent used choco npc since.)

The other thing that still makes me crash even without DoF enabled is the mercantile house (any city). If i go in there and talk to my retainers with the bell i will crash about 50% of the time. I have to either call them from the adventurer's guild bell, or go directly into the market ward where they are to trade stuff.

I just finished my brand new computer, i73930k, asus ROG, EVGA GTX 680 SC, I tried to do United We Stand tonight and I got the "ffxiv has stopped working" error about 12 times in 2 hrs. The game was completely unplayable. Not impressed.. Eventually i d/c while dead, came back and d/c again and gave up.. The game looks amazing but can't play... Ive tried high settings, low settings, settings off, everything...

Before this it was the directx error only but now it's switched to "ffxiv has stopped working"

yea i havent gotten directx error lately but since patch 1.23a i get the FFXIV has stopped working once or twice a day. Looks like they changed something in the last patch.

I'm just waiting for 2.0 to fix everything at this point...

Count me amongst those with an issue. This is imo the same problem that was affecting nvidia users back in 2010. A google search on both the nvidia and the square enix side reveals several false solutions, the most laughable of which is nvidia claiming they can't recreate the issue. This despite hundreds of youtube videos and complaints clearly illustrating the issue, of which the ONLY COMMON THREAD is nvidia users playing ffxiv.

Its not the overclock, its not other programs being open, its not ambient occlusion or depth of field. The best nvidia cards are still not loading up heavy textures properly even under the lightest settings and someone needs to tell us why.

I am trying to get all the achievments and content done before 2.0 that I can right now, but how can I get any help? You can't even get in a linkshell without shouting in Ul'Dah, and sitting there makes the game crash. Not to sound snarky, but its been 2 years.

I am disappointed. I got my Lancer to 24 earlier this summer/year and I tried playing again today. At first, I was able to log in and make it to the first loading screen, then it would crash. I fidgeted with the Multisampling settings and now I can play for about 10 minutes or so and it will crash again, mentioning the DirectX issue.

I'm assuming that it's something in the latest patch (as previously stated) that's messing with something connected to the multisampling setting. As it is now, I don't even feel like trying to get it to work anymore today (and I really wanted to hear the lore behind Meteor, as the Meteor wasn't in the sky when I stopped playing before. I logged on and was like "WHAT IS THAT!?!"). Ah well. Here's to version 2.0.

Played the game on a GTX580 until yesterday and no real problems with it. Now I switched to a GTX690 and like other people I get "ffxiv has stopped working" quite frequently. (306.2 driver version)

AMD 5870 GC, playing in windowed mode, since patch 1.23a I get the 'Windows has stopped working' error alot more than I ever did. Also, the 'unble to detect directx message is now very common, mostly @ sign-in. My friend with a brand new Alienware and different graphics card is having the same issues. Prior to this patch I think i only got the directx error once in almost 2 years of play ;/

Ive got a GeForce GTX 675M with the latest driver (304.79) installed and I get both the DirectX crash and the "Final Fantasy XIV has stopped working" crash. Usually a few times each day, unpredictable time periods. I'm running it on Samsung series 7 gamer system, so it should be powerful enough to run it. Cmon SE -.-

please read prior postings in this thread. It is a newer gpu, newer architecture, and apparently the drivers for the 600 series cards have compatibility issues with ffxiv. Not se's fault.

honestly, i dont care if its SE's fault or not. the issue remains that this is a common problem that many people are having for a long period of time. after reading about 7 pages on this forum i gave up trying to figure out who is at fault or why; the fact remains that this is a persistent problem that should be worked out. especially given the fact that theyre releasing a 2.0 version; which seems absurd when the current version has common crashes.
SE needs to know that people are having this problem in order to either fix it on their end, or put pressure on the card's manufacturers to fix it on their end. this post started in March ffs.

I got the evga 680 superclocked version and i get the dx/driver crashes too but it happens only in the cities.

It's not just limited to that, please read my post. I've never had issues like this before last patch, and I don't have the 600 series card.

Almost a six month old bug, and no fix, people with GTX 680 keep crashing inside the 3 citys every ~4 min, how hard is it to reproduce the bug... put a GTX 680 inside a computer, run around in Uldah for more than 5 min and boom...

DX device lost (driver crash) on nvidia cards goes back all the way to beta and probly before then, but something abut the new cards is making it manifest more frequently

Try disabling Ambient Occlusion and Depth of field also tick Disable cutscene effects in the Final Fantasy XIV General Settings. I own a GTX680M (driver:306.02) and was also getting DirectX device crashes like the desktop GTX670/GTX680 users do ( the mobile GTX680M is an underclocked GTX670). After I have them disabled, the game no longer cause the dGPU driver to crash.

This is just a temporary fix until NVIDIA release an official fix.

im new to this, it seem the game the same problem for me also after 10min of playing the game to crash and say unable to detect directx device. after reading all the thread i turn off Def and AO also lower other setting down abit. but it last abit longer in game play but it still crashes after awhile like 1-2hr time. im using 4x nvidia quadro 7000, this card mostly for CAD, catia and 3d model rendering.
hoping they will fix this problem and other problem too like have have 2 cpu and many cores which have to start ffxivboot.ex thru cmd.

It still crashes but very rarely. Did you make sure to tick Disable cutscene effects ? Even DoF/AO is disabled, the DoF contents will be enabled when a cutscene zones in.

Posted this through Display driver feedback, hopefully they can fix it soon.

(3) This does not happen in Final Fantasy XIV benchmark tool, only in the retail version of the game

Reproducing the problem

(1) Make sure Depth of field and Ambient Occlusion in the Final Fantasy XIV Config is On.

(2) Log into your character.

(3) In game, go to a city called Ul'dah.

(4) Run around in there, explore the area.

(5) Randomly, between 5min to 2hour, the game would cause the whole NVIDIA GPU driver to crash.

(6) Once the NVIDIA GPU driver is crashed, ffxivgame.exe will show a popup message saying "DirectX device lost" and windows will recover the NVIDIA GPU driver then show a notice at the notification area saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered".


Temporary cure

(1) Disable Depth of field / Ambient Occlusion / Cutscene effect
(2) NVIDIA GPU driver still crashes but much less often. (Randomly between 2 hours ~ 4 days)

Been playing with DoF/AO on for like 3 hours now, no crashes. Using 306.79 WHQL. This driver is initially for Quadro/Tasla only. However, LaptopVideo2Go has released a modified INF file for the installation on GeForce products.

Update: spoke too soon, crashed in town on the 4th hour mark.

kind of late now that the new engine is in testing, but apparently new 310.70 drivers out help with FFXIV

From Release notes under fixes:

'Final Fantasy XIV Online: "DirectX device was lost" crash should no longer occur on GeForce GTX 680 systems.'

i might install and try them out, lol
