What ppl actually miss if the "feeling", that sense of wonder and fondness, that nostalgia.
I take a fair bet that many of those who are still in love with ffxi to some extent (myself included) were MUCH younger, with far less time constraints when it was "popular" . It was the first really accessible western mmo due to it's platform release.
Most I believe are still attached to it on that basis. Like remembering your first date, or first kiss, or those types of sentiments.
If you have the ability to strip that sentiment away, take away all the good times you had bantering with your friends etc, and just look at the game mechanic, etc etc. What you get isa very beautiful world with a busted game mechanic. Right from the getgo....
All it took to be "good" at FFXI was immense amounts of time. Time sink is not a challenge.
Personally I can feel nostalgia about many mmos, as I've played dozens, and made friends and memories in many of them.
But at the end of the day....the game has to perform.
I love the classic cars, but at the end of the day, no matter how you fix em up....they just are not gonna ever run as good, or reliably, or efficiently, or have the features that a brand new Audi has.....
Some still prefer to drive the classics though. Most, however; see that the benefits far outweigh the nostalgia.
