Zenos Appreciation Thread [Massive Spoilers]

Zenos Yae Galvus was nothing more than a warmonger and conqueror i denied him, was clear he was a psychopath who craved the thrill of battle but not just from anyone but someone who could go toe-to-toe with him a rival as many have already stated someone who was testing us to become stronger so that he could be defeated. he served this purpose well by spurring us to hate him and then at the end he accepted us as an equal. he was definitely a note worthy villain tho rather than taking his own life.. cause that was just an extreme measure he shoulda died from overuse of his ability i think that would have made his death more impactful.

For me,Zenos was the most likable vilain,he was a "bad boy" yeah,but thats why he was a nice rival,the other vilain were really "meh,i will kill you only because the story tell me to,i dont care about you"

Zenos was like gaius,an interesting enemy that they killed wat too fast,so much potential wasted

I for one feel like his story could have been extended much further and people would struggle for freedom longer as well.
Warriors of Dark were not around long enough, this was worst.
All the build up, and the theme of Stormblood being War and all sort of fell flat at the end.
Granted the story is not over and we will see what the rest of SB brings i guess

Also Zenos being overly powerful at the beginning, i had wished that by the end we still would have struggled to defeat him, and i normally do not say this, lol

Have you seen all the people calling for Menagerie nerfs? I'd say it was a struggle to beat him for most.

I think they mean storywise.

And I do hope that the ease of feeing two countries doesn't become the trend Lyse hopes it will be. In fact, I hope it blows up in her face. It doesn't feelt like we've killed half of what the wreckage in gyr abania would suggest of a true war.

I relate to Zenos more then any other character in this game. #JusticeForZenos

She doesn't want to torture them naturally. She's only like that since she was mistreated by Domans. It's all a big revenge for her. Xenos is just something more. He's evil because he simply is. No tragic backstory, no ulterior motive. Dude's just evil.

It was more about what you said about Yotsutu how her having a tragic back story bored you and you just wanted her dead because of it. I wasn't a fan of her myself, but at least SE attempted to flesh her out more than Mr. Blood Knight.

That's what I find boring about her though. It is her back story. To many villains now a days need a tragic back story or something to show why they are villains. There is not enough villains like Zenos who are villains just because they are strong enough to be giant dicks. Not everything needs an explanation. I like the fact he is a villain is just because he is bored and wants a worthy challenger.

Everyone in this damn game has a tragic backstory. Either be it because of the Calamity, the Dragonsong War or the invasion of Ala Mhigo/Doma. At this point it's just par for the course, same story different day. At a point you get bored of it. I'll like her even less if she suddenly has a change of heart because of the fact she is not dead yet thanks to Brosetsu.

Lyse was done poorly, everything was about getting her motivated, rather than getting her skilled enough in leadership (because she wasn't fit to rule, and still isn't), but maybe that part of the plot will still come.. she should fail miserably, and we probably will need to fix that mess.

Fordola should get a redemption arc imo, after a punishment arc where she's gonna pay for her sins. I don't want to see her die, she might be an interesting ally/rival to the WoL later in the story.

Good point, I hope they have a lot in store for Lyse during the patches, because during the leveling MSQ she was pretty much just following us around. Even Tancred who barely showed up managed to achieve far more than Lyse who followed us during the whole history.

Zenos is ffxiv version of stalin. have you look at the area around Gyr Abiana. how people lost their live to that wacko how people want they city state to be free could free if empire left them alone

If you look Russia you see same thing Stalin killed millions to keep himself in in power.

It matters not that your intent was an insult. All that matters is how one receives it, if you choose to receive it as a compliment, then it is a compliment even if your intent was different. How one receives something is the only thing that matters.

But he called me his only friend you cannot hate that.

He really felt to me like a more poorly written Luca Blight. The events in Suikoden 2 that lead you to being able to tackle Luca were much, much, much more believable than how Stormblood handles the power disparity between the WoL and Zenos as well as how that gap is closed.

I find him utterly terrifying, but strangely compelling company.

How? Last i checked he didnt put people in camps, kill them and turn their skin into paper, commit mass genocide nor blame suffering on other people or disregard the opinions of those he oppressed (Forolda).

In the state of war Zenos kinda sat in the grey area of what youre "supposed" to do in war and occupation in that time.

Hey who knows! Maybe that is his secret hobby.

Zenos was an incredibly bland anime villain. Evil for the sake of evil, more powerful because the plot demands it, zero character depth. Literally the weakest story element of the entire expansion.

I repeat. Not every villain needs a reason to be evil or a dick. I am so sick and tired of media trying to give villains some reason to be evil when that is not necessary. In fact, I find it boring most of the time media tries that. There is nothing wrong with a character being evil and a dick just because that is his personality. Not everything needs a backstory.

I found him extremely enjoyable. Really sad we won't be seeing any more of him.

This sort of complaint, which is prevalent in this thread, really bothers me if only for the simple fact that this game at its core is VERY anime. Yes, you have a very anime villain, in a very anime game, facing off against a very VERY anime rag tag team of heroes whom of which include the Mariest of Sues. So why is it that the villain in particular is the thing to shatter your suspense of disbelief?

I think you misunderstand what a reason to be evil or a dick means. I don't mean he needs a tortured past that explains his monstrous nature. I mean he needs reasons. He had none. The only stated motivation for any of his actions implied or otherwise was he was looking for a challenging fight.

And this is what makes his character so damn anime, and worse than the other characters good or evil in this game. Being super evil for the sake of trying to ferret out someone strong enough to oppose you is incredibly flimsy, and a motivation almost wholly found in shonen animes, which is why I added that pesky adjective, "bland". There are plenty of animes that tell interesting and compelling stories, even in shonens once you get out of the early chapters, but Zenos was Bland. So this game can have anime-like components littering it's narrative, and that's fine. The occupation of ala mhigo and doma however, were central storylines setup years in advance in FFXIV, so yes I expect the leader of those occupations to be more interesting than "NEEDS MOE POWA!"

It feels like SE are just out to kill Garlean generals.

Gaius: You start to see his side of things and start agreeing... kills him off
Regula: You start agreeing with that he says and his side of things... kill him off
Zenos: You start to see you are quite a like and agree with some things he says on what you have done... kill him off

Just feels like SE doesn't want us liking them so they decide to kill them off. Then they leave us with just bland boring characters and the story generally suffers because of it.

That's something that I cannot understand in this thread.

There is a difference between liking a villain character design because it makes a story interesting and liking a villain. Some of the posts here where people are straight up praising the villain instead of the character design is quite concerning.

I won't deny. Zenos makes for an interesting villain. He reminds me of the Joker in The Dark Knight. However, straight up glorifying such a character like what some people are doing in this thread is something I won't go as far as to do.

In character I would very much disagree about agreeing with him. When he started calling me a Warrior out for battle, in my head all I could think was "If y'all would just stop trying to destroy the bloody world for one second I could get some work done! Just for a moment!"

And how is that not sufficient?

He did not care about Garlemald. All he wanted was personal satisfaction. For him that satisfaction had to come from a worthy enemy, someone that makes him actually try to win against. He was selfish in his desire for a challenge. A prince raised with a silver spoon with the finest of teachers, the best enhancements, anything he wanted he got. Everything was handed to him on a silver platter, except an opponent on his own level.

So he decided to get his hands dirty and make one. Just so he can be satisfied.

It's a simple, not very grandiose reason behind everything he does. Because he is not a complex character, and only pursues what he wants.
