ummm to be honest, that has nothing to do with the fact that the PS3 still has limited memory, it is what caused alot of problems later on with FFXI on PS2, and look there they found alot of ways around it.
Well, let us hope that they can overcome this problems when they arise
CAPS LOCKS MAKES YOUR POINT MORE VALID writing like this is invalid BUT THIS IS VALID.
/sigh, by that definition, then anything and everything becomes a limitation. You don't have a supercomputer? limitation, the program have to run through an OS? limitation, can't access hardware without interfacing through generic driver? limitation. Even if this game remains PC-exclusive, it'll still, and will always be limited by something.
The limitation you and I are talking about though is not in the same vein as what the OP implied, which is one of obstacles that cannot be overcome.
PS3, operating system, hardware and network is far more powerful in the long term than the PS2 was. It offers greater flexibility even 10 years down the road, that the PS2 was unable to.
The XI team was also incredibly strict about all around restrictions of the PC version due to the limitations of the PS2, in an effort to keep it fair for all platforms. With allowing community developed tools for XIV PC, i'm noticing they're loosening up a bit on this.
One last time:
The PC version of the game and the PS3 Version of the game are being developed SPECIFICALLY for each other, they will not limit each other in any way.
FFXI was limited because it was designed for the PS2 then ported to the PC and xbox, therefor it was a PS2 game engine.
FFXIV will be using a PC engine ported to the PS3 so even if the PS3 has "limitations" this will have NO EFFECT on the PC client, another issue I keep hearing is FFXI's inventory that was restricted by the PS2s RAM, the PS3 has 512MB so that is not a problem, its not alot but every single PS3 alive has the SAME specs so its very easy to program for and conserve memory where they need to.
Yoshi stated complexity as well (more so than memory.) So no, the PS3 still wouldn't have held anything back. Also, the PS3 is a split memory setup, so while it "only has 256mb" it's also a more powerful memory setup, especially considering you can easily utilize the video and system memory in such a way it would get around a 'limitation' -- The main problem with dying was the complexity of the system, which a lot of things regarding XIV's core is overly complex for its own good.
Even the stat algorithms were overly complex based on an interview earlier in the year.
ROFL @ PS3 failed...
All I'm going to say is I do agree they should hold off because in all likelihood, at next E3 we'll be seeing the new Xbox & Playstation consoles, or at least the prototypes.
However it's also been delayed long enough and I don't think SE has the stomach for it. Still, the new graphics engine is freaking sick and I can't help but wonder, given the INSANE detail of Battlefield 3 (showcasing what good PCs can really do now over the 360 and PS3) how much better it may be if they just wait and go with a PS4 version (or w/e they call it).
I get everything you are saying man.
I've been feeling many of the same things myself.
I posted pretty much so in the "future of FFXIV" thread and got bone hammer flamed by all the people who don't have a straight head.
This IS a serious concern.
It really is.
The PS3 is about as graphically capable as a Pc from over half a decade ago.
Almost no game renders at a higher resolution than 1280x720(Many less than that).
It may have a decent CPU, but in the long term the amount of RAM it has and the GPU structure it's based on are really limiting factors in a lot of ways.
From AA capabilities, amount of unique things(Such as texture diversity, unique character models, etc) to be stored in RAM at any given time, texture filtering, amount of polygons being rendered on screen etc.
And while it is a lot more optimized because it is just meant for running games, and it is much more powerful than the PS2, 5 years down the road it will be limited even more than it is now. PC's on the other hand will not because they are constantly changing and if the specs of an average modern PC were in a console, it would be far more powerful than the PS3.
Some factor or another will limit the PS3, and then in change hamper other platforms due to "It will be unfair"
I agree with you. But seems the forums are full of idoitic fanboys that cannot stand a "negative" point of view.
FF14 will be good, but I would have been GREAT if it were just released for the PC
I give up, at this point you're just plain trolling
I don't give two hoots about negative points of views, they're yours, feel free to keep them. But your point of view isn't negative, it's plain ignorant, and people far more knowledgeable on the subject than you are have been trying to tell you so for the past 14 pages, but hey, it's just so much easier to remain ignorant right?
The PS3 has 256MB System memory and 256MB graphics memory which can be shared, combine the 2 and the PS3 has 512MB of RAM.
Also SE said they're running into issues with the FFXIV 1.0 design, 2.0 will NOT suffer from this
first of all guys he is 100% correct. If any of you are keeping up with ff11 they said a many times they can not add this and that because of ps2. Look it up. For example new tab translations can not be added because of space of the limited ps2 HDD.
Second of all OP you are also 100% wrong. Ps3 has the ability to have up to a 500 gig hard drive. therefore everything you are saying is null and void. Memory problems as in ram just means Ps3 aint running in 1080p and it will not be 60FPS like PC. everything esle is a HDD issue which ps3 and PC have none off.
/thread please.
Actually DNO the PS3 can support bigger HDDS than 500GB now ^^, i've seen one with a 1TB its expensive tho lol.
The HDD space argument is moot. Square will most likely have the game spec to be playable on the 20GB model, from now and the future. The texture resolution will be lowered to combat the limitation.
dont get me wrong, FFXI was probably my favorite MMO overall from all the ones I have tried/played. but that's what probably made me cancel my CE Pre-Order 1 week before the game went live. He was NOT listening to player feedback throughout all the betas, he was just doing what he wanted. I mean I got the game for dirt cheap and played a little during this f2p period, but once it goes to billing I am not too sure yet if I am going to subscribe to it. But in conclusion I like what Yoshi has been doing(actually listening to players) but it might be too late for me. But we shall see how I feel in the future with more updates.
You know what also holds PC games back, low and mid range PCs. Look at WoW they clearly made that game to run on a wide range of computers and it looks pretty dated because of it, just a thought.
I just don't see the point in bashing PS3 when you are talking about a FF game. It was always going to be released on PS3 and if that does limit the PC game well so what. You are playing a console franchise it was always going to happen so get over it. They already confirmed that the new UI will support addons which will be PC only so it's still going to be console gamers that get the shit deal, so quit bitching.
