Its because you are connected to FFXIV's servers.
In order to get access to those servers, you need to be online (sony). So since you logged in before it went down, your already connected to SE directly so your golden as far as FFXIV is concerned.
Now if somehow you lost connection...then it means you just joined the "outside looking in" club.
I wonder if there's a way to prevent this, some effective counter-measure. It seems laughable a multimillionaire company can be screwed by people who are probably unemployed and bored.
Just was able to log in (on PS3), not sure if they're done doing whatever they're doing but keep trying if you can't still get in.
I'm not even going to try anymore, it gets old to try again and again.
For those who have logged on since this happened, you guys from NA? east or west coast? just trying to figure out if its even an inkling up near my area lol sorry to ask.
I just got in. I'm in California.
Welp, i got in now! Not logging out this time until everything is fixed! ><
It works now for me
Im in California
I'm east coast and still no luck. Been trying for 2 hrs straight.
The people that are getting in, PS3 or PS4?
I'm from Italy and still can't log in ... :(
Oh yea i'm ok here ty^^ was scary thou as for me i'm in north CA i got into the game then got booted then was in for an hour but had to log and now i can't get in but if you call sony. Right away there messenger says they know psn is down and will be up soon {hope there not full of crap} but yes
PS4, can't get in.
I've been hearing that PS3 players were getting in, but haven't heard anything about ps4 yet. Which is why I was curious. The only difference I can think of is that the PS4 requires PSN Plus for certain online services, but someone said that wasn't true for FF14.
I can't even reach the login screen. I get a black screen. Stupid earthquake on top of PSN going down. What luck. Though I should probably check how much damage the earthquake actually did, lol.
PS4 requires routine licence checks on digital downloads so if you bought 14 digitally and you're system is waiting for the licence confirmation you won't be able to log in as it can't authenticate your copy of the game. I don't believe PS3 has the same issue so that is why PS3 players are starting to be able to log on and some PS4 users can't.
Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot you can do to prevent DDOS attacks on servers that are already high traffic. A DDOS attack is simply spamming a server with requests/data until it crashes. You can redirect traffic across all the servers you want but a connection into your network is always going to start with one server (Lobby in the case of FFXIV) which can easily be flooded faster than it can reroute connections.
I'm sure Squeenix would prefer this but Sony even going back to the PS2 has had requirements for network authentication (DNAS on PS2) in order to verify your console, the game software etc. If FFXIV wasn't a game there wouldn't be a problem. Netflix etc. get around it because they're a service. I think the only way FFXIV could get classed as a "service" instead of a game is if the game software itself was free. That would negate any need for software authentication by Sony. I can remember a lot of DNAS issues playing XI on PS2 for a long while.
This is what the culprit had to say. I personally dont agree with his/her methods.

Welcome followers and supporters of FamedGod. Over the past 9 hours many are wondering why such events have occurred to the playstation network. Sony is a company that lacks the security which makes every user vulnerable to having their information leaked. Jailbreaks can access hidden and prohibited content now. Memory dumping can reveal the hidden servers which personal and main information is stored. Simple hex converting and decryption lead to a full DDoS on playstations main server data center. Please understand, I am here to show, that you as a corperate company are vulnerable. Sony You just launched a new system on a new network but it all leads to the same server. How more vulnerable could you make your network? Take advise from microsoft and their ways of security. They know what they're doing and have the security to prevent most attacks. This took little to no effort to preform such an attack. The funny thing is that you still allow people to access the network on these jailbroken consoles. If you really wanted to remove them from your network entirely, you would drop the current network and forge all the information to a new and well secured network making it impracticle to mod the next. The fact you cant even stop the sign in from modded firmware is ridiculous. You apparently, didnt solve a thing when you went down for a month. I hope you think twice next time.
Personally, jailbreaks aren't really an issue. In personal opinion, jailbreaks are actually, for the most part, a good thing. Even without jailbreaks, bad stuff can happen. It is people that are bad. I really hate how people do stuff that affect many people instead of simply their target. It is like: Oh hey, let us go and destroy these two cities full of innocent people to prove a point to their government. Instead of: Oh, hey, let us do something to prove a point to the government without affecting innocent bystanders.
Well, considering how big of an item square is, I'm sure they could probably give sony a reason to make an exception. I mean, Square already has their own verification process that the player has to go through.
Funny thing they stayed on Blizzards and Sony longer then RIOT's LoL
I'd expect MS to have better protection since the Xbox One out of the box is a paperweight that requires an update which lets you use it on offline mode that you need internet to download in the first place. Sony could definitely be more secure, but to inconvenience the free days of people who just want to play a game trying to teach them a "lesson" is outright self-righteous and honestly pathetic that they (the attackers) have nothing better to do with their time. This guys reeks of self-importance and pompousness and I hope something bad happens to him. Go drink your milk and take a nap instead of messing with the free time of others.
