Scythes have become increasingly popular in video games. Also, they were an actual weapon used by certain tribes in India. That's where the XI Zhagnals originated.
I'd rather see Great Swords go to a Rune Fencer type job. Dark Knights should return with Scythes and their base job being Reaper.
Also, Have any of you played Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen? You will learn to fear the Reaper, as any scythe swings that connect are instant death.
Also, I think Sice from Type-0 is SE's nod to trying to get more scythes and weapon varieties into the series. Also any one arguing that farming tools are not weapons... Most weapons throughout history started off as a farming tool... It's even in the MRD story line when the guild receptionist tells you the history of the guild that the MRDs used axes to build their ships, and just kept using them as weapons because it made boarding actions easier.

Also, Sice's moveset in Type-0 is meant to resemble a Dark Knight's. Her weapon builds power with each kill she makes and last until she takes a hit. She also uses several dark based spells. Saying Sice doesn't represent a Dark Knight is like saying Nine doesn't represent a Dragoon because he also wears a school uniform, though he uses a spear and jumps.

FFXI was the first FF game to give Dark Knights not only Scythes but Greatswords as well (wasn't it?) Not sure what the hatred towards FFXI is for then. You hate it for giving them Scythes? Yet its also the game that gave them your beloved Greatsword.
Not to mention Zeid, the main representative of Dark Knights used a Great Sword, and you had to use one to unlock the job.
That aside, I'd rather see DRK stem from a new class entirely. I'd rather see it as a hybrid Melee/Magic user. In 1.0 THM had a LOT of spells that we don't have anymore, but back when everything was more free form, I made use of a lot of those spells on MRD like Absorb VIT and STR. But you can't make all of those individual spells... You'd need spells merged to make it work. But Absorb STR at least should make return. Debuff to help tank, buff on Dark Knight.
Dark Knight should be able to put it's own HP into attacks, but be capable of recovering HP without annoying a healer. The base class should get spells like Drain, while the Job abilities are things like Soul Eater.
Scythe, no question. One of the most badass weapons out there.
My issue is that the iconic feel/ look of the class dose not correlate or in my opinion dose not compare to the more traditional Final Fantasy Dark Knight.

I'm not even sure why there's a debate, here. Why not give DRK both Scythe and Great Sword? Lots of classes in this game (perhaps even all of them, depending on how you look at it) have two types of weapons to choose from. GLD get Swords and Daggers. PGL get Claws and Hora. CNJ get Staves and Wands. ACN get Picatrix and Grimoires.
The only issue I see here is that unlike the above examples, Scythe and Great Sword do not have similar wielding animations, but I'm sure that could be worked around.
BTW this thread has now evolved (devolved???) into a scythe vs great sword picture thread no matter how irrelevant the posts.

Ugh so many scythe people, just because of XI, I liked XI too, but I'm not such a fanboy I'm going to discount two decades worth of FF lore. They use a great sword, nalgering was so cool, and a pretty classic great sword design that is even in FFIII. I pick Great Sword, because that is a drk, scythe is just some abomination from one game that HAD MULTIPLE WEAPONS be used BY JOBS. In the most classic sense, if DRK can only use one weapon, it'd be a great sword. IF this game had multiple weapons per job/class, then I'd say give it both. Maybe that's the problem not what weapon drk should have, but the fact that we only have the ability to use one weapon, this that is only a newer ff concept, the older games had people using multiple weapons.
And for those that say well no other class can use sycthe besides drk so they have to have, why does there have to be a battle scythe in the game period? You just want it, it isn't needed, same with great sword just saying. There is no need to have a scythe class besides people like it in xi. But in xi you could choose if you were a great sword guy or a great scythe guy, and it kept both a lil happy, in this game, we're going to automatically cut off a huge demographic of drk fans, who didn't play XI if you give it a scythe, just saying, or rather playing devils advocate, because I rather liked that in Xi you could do both. See it from the majority of FF fans, who didn't play XI, but might be playing XIV, I meet them a lot. (I think scythe is only xi and type 0) it was lower dps than a great sword too until apoc, I don't get it, just cause it looked cooler?

I don't see why not (But I am certain someone will, lol, which is fine, they are entitled). No clue how they will implement this; should not be too difficult though. Still waiting for a nunchaku wielding class/job; thought XIV would be able to implement these no prob. Nunchaku alone will make a brutha sub for 90 days; I have no kids, all of my money is spent on Air Jordans and bills.
They should just release both imo; just balance them out. This one weapon crap is annoying imo. XIV appears to want to distance itself from XI (That is fine, different game), but certain aspects of XI worked; do not be afraid to copy a lil something something from XI. Do a Dev poll or something, idk.
To call those who want a scythe for DRK fanboys is kind of a contradiction because aren't the people who want great swords fanboys as well? I never played ffXI to be honest, however after XI introduced scythes for DRK there has to be reason why people are drawn more to it then the great sword? Maybe its the way the weapon itself portrays the DRK as a troubled soul better than that of the great sword. Great sword has been done to death by every mmo out there i think in order to make ffxiv more unique then it needs to break away from that old trend, which is why i think it scythes were introduced in XI for that reason to help people ease into a new fresh feel for DRK with scythes.
However if SE does decide to make DRK to wield both weapons then perhaps DRK it would be best if it is it's own class that has nothing to do with PLD. Make it where it can be a tank class or DPS class. The great sword side of it can be the tank side of DRK, maybe taking some moves from MRD since it has a similar slow/heavy weapon movement and use it to carry over some abilities. And the scythe side of DRK can be DPS where it takes moves from DRG where it can carry over some moves from it as well.
Animations. Not only would you need two whole sets of animations, those animations would need to be identical in length and function due to the way interrupts operate in ARR (e.g. it's easier to get Fast Blade damage while under Paralysis than Rage of Halone because animation interrupt actually stops damage). Note also that 1h and 2h wands have identical animations, as do daggers and longswords.
The curvature of that is such that attempting to attack with it would have the dull part of the blade hit the opponent. You might as well be swinging a big mallet.
I wonder if it might be interesting to use GLA as a base and have relic equipment like sickle-swords, a-la the ancient Egyptian Khopesh.
Technically, scythe is not an effective polearm weapon in practice, it is only looks cool in fantasy gaming or manga.

I'd like to point out that any image of Cecil based on Amano artwork... That's not a great sword he's holding. It looks strikingly similar to the XIV Gae Bolg.
That aside, you can't really argue for DRK using great sword for iconography purposes. Just look at Geomancer or Blue Mage. Geomancers use bells, though in Tactics they use axes, and T A2 they use poles. Not to mention in VI, Mog is a dancing Geomancer that uses spears. Similarly, Blue Mages use swords, but Khimari uses lances (Though Jump is one of his Blue Spells) and Quistis uses a whip, and Quina uses a fork.
XIV is really the first game that forces people into using a single weapon. Also, if you look at Sice's ability load out, she's very similar to a DRK who gets stronger with each kill she makes.
Also, for people who argue scythes are impractical, Zhagnals are an Indian battle scythe, and ninjas used Kamas, which are hand scythes. Anything weighted properly is a good weapon.
I say go for Scythes! With wider Blades! I want more weapons and diversity total! If you give DRK Greatswords then no one else will get them, Whereas Scythes are at least kinda fitting to DRKs and NO ONE else haha.
Just implement both. Creating animations for each should not be too difficult; I mean, they are going to create new ones anyway when additional jobs are released. Take the chains of restriction off this game, I mean damn; creativity is key.
I would also like more weapon types to coincide with the release of the expansion. I want use GS/Scythe on drk and a class that uses nunchaku like that big buff SOB from Ninja Gaiden. Weapons may overlap with the addition of more jobs anyway; daggers, swords, etc. I truly believe that when it is all said and done; there will be ppl who are upset with the lack of a scythe or GS. This thread is already split regarding this topic, lol. Just my cents, not a demanding anything, just my humble opinion on the whole GS vs Scythe debate.
I also like the idea of sword-n-board for Dark Knight. Just as SMN and SCH branch off from ACN and share similar "weapons," DRK could branch off from GLD. Perhaps it could be a DPS class, and actually use a lot of offensive shield attacks, and maybe the shields for DRK could look more dangerous.
I mean, really. Can you imagine Shield Bash with this thing?
