Come on, XIV is not using XI's system. If I recall correctly, before you get married do you have to apply it via PlayOnline? I know it's not their responsibility to baby you and hell I was just joking around. I am sorry if you didn't get it.

A woman doesn't have to change their name at marriage, I never did! :p Plus the couple can always choose a new surname if they really wanted to and start a new lineage instead of going for the more traditional / antiquated taking the surname of the male spouse.

As for the joking... I didn't get it, it came off as really harsh lol.

And I wasn't being hostile, despite your joke being at the expense of part of the community. I was just saying you're calling attention to it in this thread yourself.

Anyway, there's really no reason the system would be unfair to women, you simply flag both player's accounts for name change, and then its up to them to decide what they want to do. The man could take the woman's name, they could make a new family name, whatever they want.

Hell, RPers and those who follow the lore in naming conventions would be adhering to matronymics in certain cases anyways, and the whole who accepts whom's surname becomes rather foggy. That's why a simple name change flag for both players would cover all the bases, you could just leave your name as is in fact.

Regardless, as long as they're warned ahead of time whoever accepts the responsibility of changing their name will have to take that risk. The same thing is true in reality.
