You know, it's kind of strange. Alot of the single-player Final Fantasy games find interesting ways to deviate from "the classic model" of Final Fantasy, but the MMOs of the franchise seem to have no real freedom...

Tech demos are just that, they aren't games. I wish people would quit bringing that up. Anyone see the tech demo of FFVI characters in 3D for the N64? It was just a tech demo. Concepts the company is playing with. I think the financial situation rushed the game out. If you go back to release it was a very bad quarter for SE. They pushed out a Final Fantasy title so retail sales would bolster a horrible quarter and it worked. Retail sales of this game (before most people knew the state it was in) added a lot of revenue. They probably assumed they could finish/ polish a bare bones game on our dime with subscription fees. Classic business sacking long term well being for short term gain. But, that's in the past and I don't want to be negative.
I think this game needs Yoshida and SE needs him. He connects with the players, something SE has never been good at until this fiasco. That said, I think a lot of Tanaka's ideas were original and innovative. It just wasn't the right time for them and the rest of the game wasn't in place to support/ enjoy them. I like the game's new direction however, I just hope they get it out in a timely manner. -
