They've been doing that in japan already. The US non existent patent was actually helping them out until recently.

Nintendo's pull in Japan is crazy.

I'd say SE is prolly the one company they'd go out of their way to avoid using it against given what happened when King(Candy Crush Saga) tried to do the same.

They will not go after a Chinese company because they know they have 0 chance of winning. Pocket pair is a JP company, and they have to abide by JP rules while Mihoyo gives 0 F about it.

I am not even sure if Nintendo even went after big players on the market because the only reason they won is that it cost less for sued companies/ individuals to settle rather than fight Nintendo, which had the resources to drag the process for years.

That's why the settlement for Pocketpair is 30k. They are not even after money; they want to just bully the company. Trash ass company, I cannot wait for the time when Nintendo becomes bankrupt, vile scums..

I still haven't heard a compelling argument for patents as a concept existing at all. They just seem to stifle innovation for the sake of profit.

They'll only do this to bully indie companies, and they've been getting much more aggressive since Palworld got received positively. Corporate butthurt for a company as old and big as Nintendo is just pathetic.

Honestly, Im confused why this patent was even allowed, and shocked that companies like SE, Blizzard, etc havent issued a legal challenge to it (atleast thus far).
There have been plenty of games (and movies) over the years that depict the summoning of a creature to battle (Pokemon, Digimion, Shin Megami Tensei, yokai watch, the list goes on and on.) Why is it that Nintendo was allowed to patent such a frequently used idea (or other patents lately)? They recently won a patent regarding riding or flying on creatures for transportation. How many games have depicted such ideas over the years. I'd venture quite a lot.

The patent office here in the US has been careless in awarding such patents. I'm actually growing quite annoyed with Nintendo. I've been seriously contemplating buying any more of their titles, consoles, etc until they clean up their bloody act. Its so disgraceful and in my opinion is tarnishing their image and brand.

Not probable. This is likely just for patent licensing ensure that new games need to check in with Nintendo to make sure nobody copies the exact Pokemon formula. It would also make future lawsuits far easier for them to win. SquareEnix and Nintendo are friends so worst case scenario, they'd just get licensed to use the summons; but I don't think Nintendo will do anything to them.

If you read the patent, what it describes is almost exclusively Pokémon gameplay. Summons in Final Fantasy don't match the definition, for example.
