Sitting at 4800 comms. I feel guilty because I never commend at all. I don't have any feelings about the system. Sometimes I will when someone's really funny or memorable.
When I see someone asking for them, I'm more inclined to commend them because I was reminded. Like I said, I don't really care about that system.
-
I give out commendations if you impressed me with some skill, whether that's in combat performance or glam and portrait posing, or if you've proven a refreshing personality in chat that made my run more fun.
Being begged for a commendation would make me less likely to give it, because even if I might already have been inclined to give it, I don't want a person to think that begging worked -- because I find it an annoying behavior and it will only go away if general perception is that it never works.

I'll say this much: A commendation is a gift given to one for some reason or other. I give mine out to those who earn it by doing their job, doing it well, and being a team player. I have never given one out because of their portrait nor because they asked for one.

Had one loser PCT try to get commendations by trying to be visibly helpful with the art of “yapping”. In the start of an expert dungeon run, wasted 15 seconds to type down that we should eat foods and make sure to have our wondrous tails until they finally joined to help AOE the mob. He and the healer died at every mini-boss while it’s at 25% - 35%, leaving me to solo the rest as a tank.
At the end of the long dungeon run, I have a cheeky “ggs. Good luck on getting mentor status.” And didn’t commend him, left the instance, and was met with a /tell of him being absolutely butthurt and unhinged. Absolute cinema.

It's so weird, players in my datacenter leave the game so fast . . . my fingers are not fast enough to give a commendation.
-
I haven't seen it in a long time, but I usually just hand out my commendation to whoever has the best portrait picture.
-
Don't think I've ever come across commendation beggars, I would be less inclined to comm them tho.
My priorities are
1. Lalafell
2. Cute, funny and/or badass portrait.
Gotta work for that commendation.

I've seen a few but probably like once every 2 or 3 months. I'll do as they requested if they play above average & not sh!tty in general.
All Meteor/Hiroshi/Ardbert/Riol cosplayer gets my comms instantly, though :P

Considering most people I end up with in DF leave before I have time to type ‘ty all gg’, I can’t say I’ve seen any hanging around begging for comms as of yet lol. Personally I’d probably just give them if they asked cuz like, what else am I gonna do with it? It’s not like they’re valuables lol

I honestly wouldn't mind a separate system at this point.
Like commendations as a concept are nice but the complete inconsistency in why, when, and how much they're given out combined with them being tied to mentor.. it's not like you can ever fully control it but..
It makes me wish I could give out something with no reward tied to it that was more specific and still went through even if everyone left early.
Like how I can leave an Amazon package delivery a review like "handled with care!" even if I found the package an hour after it was delivered.
Portraits still SUCK but if they fix them to be more usable and I could just say "Nice portrait!" and players could see it if they checked like a log book you carry on yourself or whatever.. That way there's still evidence of you getting nice responses but it's not a number/resource/currency etc. it's just something for you to enjoy.
Hah there are much more important things that need to be handled in this game though than giving me the ability to put stickers in people's digital scrapbooks because we were in a party together even if the idea makes me smile.
