My 2 cents on ranged tax

They've been going in this direction for several expansions now, and despite requests to remove the tax, they've consistently given a major DPS advantage to melee.

There's no chance they'll suddenly change direction.

So, to start, having 5% less DPS would already be much more acceptable than 10-13%.

While I agree with your assumption that SE is too stuck in their ways to make the change, I do think we have to stop normalizing it.

There are able with a sufficient precision to balance all dps jobs within 2-3% and they choose not to do it for outdated reasons. Just look how all melees/PCT/BLM are well balanced, maybe a bit a fine tuning would be nice but overall solid job. And then there is a stupid "ranged tax" that doesn't apply to PCT and BLM for some reasons.

There were some player recommendations about MCH 'Jumper Cables' or BRD 'Seraph Song' last expansion, but I think the best solution is to standardize non-healer Raises as some form of Phoenix Down role action with some constraints around use (either recast or number of uses per fight). Then you're not penalized for bringing it as a job-specific action, and progression groups no longer need to design around access to it.

It's an oversight, but you understood that I was also talking about the caster with resurrection who are categorized with the ranged physical DPS and also suffer from the tax.

It doesn’t apply because they believe that these casters are less mobile than others, which is completely false.

But, well, they have their own view of things and are stuck on it.

I'm not saying they aren't capable of balancing the game, just that it seems they think the game is balanced as it is; otherwise,
this situation wouldn’t keep repeating over and over again, despite people complaining about it for ages.

Have things changed since then?

They narrowed the gap much later in Endwalker because they admitted that the boss hitboxes were too large, which made the ranged DPS/rez caster tax excessively high.

Now they've reduced the hitboxes and made the exact same mistake as before, and this isn't new at all.

All of this because they believe that melee players have a much greater workload than others, which would justify such a gap.

This is completely false, but it’s the mistake they keep repeating and constantly trying to correct.

I get the impression that the team in charge of job adjustments and balancing doesn’t really know what they’re doing or is never 100% confident in their decisions.

In any case, the current approach to adjustments just doesn’t make any sense.

Even the changes made to certain jobs seem completely unthought-out and rushed.

I'm actually convinced they perfectly know what they're doing, but also suffer from extremely misguided focus on balancing in other places than where it matters the most, aka damage in prog and not in clears. My job is very competitive when I prog. But once we're past certain mechanics, what a surprise, it stops being competitive here anymore and turns into a laughing stock with a hard ceiling.

Double melee and double caster is a significant damage increase over Phys range caster and double melee. All possible DPS comps should do around the same amount of damage.

The fact that Phys ranged has a tainted role is the result - Machinist doesn't belong in Phys range because overall it does not function in the same fashion as a "lower damage but able to augment the overall raid performance"
