No, I have a house. I'm good.
A house is playable content. Retainers is just convenience. I am not missing any gaming experience by not having extra retainers as I would if they start locking playable content such as housing behind extra fees. I went around and created a few alts to get additional free retainers for decos and dyes I keep for myself and later sales as well as fc submersible stuff. I just use the fc chest to exchange items. I‘m not a hoarder and don’t keep old trophies and other useless garbage.
24 losses in a row this is starting to get to my nerves
if every 1 boycotted ffx14 for a month they would fix this the right way or be screwed
While I'm not sure I 100% agree, I still appreciate your added detail and perspective. By that I just mean that id consider retainer a content as well, given they wear gear, go out on quests for you, generate gil, hold items, etc.
But I can see how a whole house feels physically more substantial, and particularly I see your point that you get free retainers, but you get no free house and in the current system there is a chance you never will.
This is a strange analogy isn't it?
Retainers are an in-game advantage. The more of them you can send out the more items you can bring back per hour, and those items can be used by yourself or sold for gil.
A buyable house on the mogstore would probably be a gil sink if anything, assuming they didn't remove the in-game gil cost.
Not saying I think it's right, just pointing out that I don't think it would hurt anyone besides the housing extremists. I can imagine these houses having completely different wards, and certain toxic elements in the housing community mocking them for it.
IMO for a paid sub addon, such housing would need to offer something the normal housing currently in game doesn't have. Examples being alternate floorplan layouts, larger yard, larger size category beyond large, etc.
Alternate floorplan layouts would probably be the biggest seller I think at least from my personal viewpoint. In game small houses aren't bad, neither are the large ones for the most part, however after buying a medium awhile back when Shirogane first opened and getting around to decorating it I've come to really dislike the placement of the stairs and the short depth wide width layout most noticeably on the ground floor which has me thinking I should have spent the extra at the time for a large despite thoughts that I would never finish decorating that much empty space.
I don't know if they'd do that though. It'd kill off all of the regular housing wards at that point, and I don't think SE wants that. Pretty sure Yoshi P has said the reason he doesn't want instanced housing is because it'd harm the "housing community".
I guess the investors could pressure them to.
What's more likely is that they figure out how to let people change floor layouts with a mogstore only item.
They may be doing that (different interior layouts) with the “housing mirage” already, and from what little they’ve said about it, it doesn’t seem like it would be a mogstation thing. Would we need to pay extra gil to resize our interiors? Somehow I doubt that too, unless they make it a flat “remodeling” fee or permit thing, because you’re still going to have the same size plot no matter what you do to the inside, and the plot is what you’re bidding/paying for. I don’t see them making you fork over a full 50 million gil to make a large interior inside a small plot cottage, but who knows? I’m just hoping for a variety of layouts to be added, and not just the 3 existing sizes.
Square Enix should be on their hands and knees thanking their players for even putting up with a monthly sub in the year 2023, especially for how sparse the content rollouts are in this game. That "pay monthly or don't play at all" style of monetization is phased out pretty much everywhere except, I guess, WoW? I can't think of another game that even does it anymore. Some games will have monthly subs but it'll be to obtain extra stuff; you'll still be able to play the base game without paying a sub. But this game will log you out when your sub expires and that's pretty rare afaik. In that vein, Square is super fortunate to have players who're willing to buy the base game, pay a monthly subscription, and have a separate cash shop while they roll out like 3 major updates a year and then sit on their asses doing nothing but updating the cash shop monthly.
In that vein, hell no I wouldn't pay for instanced housing. SE gets enough of my money. Instanced housing is something they should've figured out years ago. Island Sanctuary should've been the key; they had instances with housing elements, but instead they discontinued further production of it because loooool of course they did. Gotta keep homeowners on a tight leash, right? After all, if people don't fear permanently losing a residence, they might unsubscribe while your devteam's pulling another 4-6 month down-period where nothing worth subbing for is happening, but there's still a subscription fee :)
Hell, I'll keep it real for a minute. With how many players don't even play the game but stay subbed so they can enter their house and keep it, they are essentially paying for a house already. I know this isn't what you mean, but I'm just saying -- consider how many people don't even take up space on this game's servers but they still hand the company money like they're just paying rent. the housing situation and the game's monetization in general are both atrocious. It's amazing that SE gets away with it with almost 0 vocal criticism from the community while other games that're at least free to play might have a similarly priced cash shop to XIV and get raked through the coals. If some f2p game sells level skips and time savers, it's awful! But when XIV sells job/story skips? Crickets. Free game has a 40 dollar mount? Disgusting! XIV has a 40 dollar aCcOuNt wIdE mount? "What are you, poor? If you don't like it, don't buy it!" MMO gamers are weird (putting it nicely) and deserve everything they get. Myself included, ngl
