Damage "taxes" deserve serious reconsideration

aDPS is for jobs like Dancer who needs to check if they've done their rotation properly because they get screwed if their party is not performing.

rDPS is your rotation DPS + support.

No he is right, if you have a string dancer partner but you are messing up your rotation as a DNC you can check aDPS on yourself to look at how well you are doing your rotation independent of your dance partner

Probably a better example of aDPS is looking at the tanks

Respectfully, I disagree, at least in part.

I do think I understand the difference between rDPS and aDPS, and why rDPS only tells a part of the story when comparing damage. But I don't think it's a useless metric in the job balance discussion. I'm open to correction if I'm mistaken, but while the BLM's individual damage is strong (second only to SAM as others have pointed out), all of the melee are consistently bringing more overall damage to the raid through their buffs (hence, higher rDPS). And if that's the case - especially when MNK and RPR have additional defensive utility, and melee as a whole are more survivable, I don't see why a raid would bring a BLM other than to fill in the obligatory "bring one of each dps type for 5% damage" slots.

I also find it "lolsy" when people use rDPS as the only metric of performance. I think we need to look at both rDPS and aDPS to get a better idea of a job

If you take a close look at these two graphs, selfish DPS like SAM, BLM and MCH performs much better if we take a look at aDPS. That's because they don't have any support dps buff. By the way, Monk still beats both BLM and MCH and we don't include their Brotherhood. rDPS is more realistic because whenever my RDM uses Embolden during the burst window, the reason the SAM is doing more DPS is not because he's suddenly better. That's because of my cooldown which increases my damage further so rDPS should always be favored.

aDPS is really and only should be use if you have a god run on your rotation but your party wasn't good enough to utilize your buffs. This is especially true to BRD and DNC.

I'm not even sure if it was worth spending the time to show and explain because you don't look very cooperative and willing to admit your point of view is wrong.

Because this is simply my opinion (and there are multtiple threads with the exact same content).

Meele have much more risk of beeing hit. Be it this thunder cats, who create close aoe. This plants with the close up spore attacks. Cerberus, who has aoe in his front and his back. This big mouthed plant enemy. The first boss of the new 90er ini (and many of the mob).
Than, are there the positonals (even, when they are reduced), that is relevant for max dmg. And not that easy to hit each time. And the phases by bosses, where you can not go near them, because of aoe.
Ranged classes need some drawbacks in combaring to meele, to be balanced. Esspecial the physicaly ones, who can attack the whole time, while running around. Otherwise, would whe have practicly only ranged classes and practicly no meele (i see in most cases more ranged classes as meele classes, in normal raids).

Maybe it is not the cases in the current savage stuff. But, it is the case in older content, story, the 90er ini and probally again in future content.
