Why is player housing so coveted in the community?

20/20 hindsight is a heady drug. You're looking at housing from a position of experience. Think about somebody who just got into housing for the first time.

A small number of people will dive in and do the research needed to figure it out. Others will think "wow, this is complicated, I'll figure it out later". And still others "This sucks. ... what do you meeeeeean no refund?".

When I first got my house I thought it was pretty cool and I want all gung ho doing all the 'bug' decorating. Set it up pretty nice too.

Then when the Asian wards came out, people moved, my FC got their large house, and lo and behold, there was a small empty plot right next to it all nice and available, so I went and relocated my house to it.

Trouble is, doing that meant bye-bye to all my hard work decorating. Having had the house long enough for the 'honeymoon' to be over, I did NOT want to go though ALL that mess again, so I didn't.

Eventually my game wife, (who is an Ommi crafter), said she would do it for me and I agreed, so at least it got furnished. LOL


But yeah, the thought of housing sounds pretty cool to those that don't have one, but after years of ownership the luster does wear off for some and you end up just not wanting to mess with it anymore.

Airships/Submarines if you're in an FC, Chocobo Stables for faster chocobo leveling, and gardening. But if none of those concern you, it's more about having your own place you've decorated that you can relax in. Personally I just walk into my house every couple of days, I don't stay for long in it, so I keep it unlocked just in case people want to come by and relax in it. Has only happened once, but I'm glad somebody else got some use out of it too.

You know you can accomplish the same with an apartment, excluding the FC related options...right? Why own a home if you don't personally use it regularly and only keep it open for other people to use? If it was a legit RP venue that you actively participate in where people can afk or meet people, like a library or cafe or whatever..I'd understand the logic.

Because I got it when Shirogane was added and don't really feel the need to lose it. Plus it's at that perfect location next to a market board and with a good view of the ocean. Not to mention I don't really take long breaks from FFXIV, since at least 3 times a week I'm asked if I want to run something with somebody.

I mean, at least *do* something with it then instead of letting it sit and rot for randoms to come in and use. It feels wasteful in the current housing environment when there are those that would use it daily as a temporary home for their FC or would turn it into a venue that's open multiple times a week.

ive tried a lot of games with player housing and almost no one cares, because anyone can have a house in those games. People only care about housing here so much BECAUSE not everyone can get one. Making them more available will take away nearly all the prestige of owning a home in game.

Again, that's why I keep it open. But people on this server don't exactly go into other people's homes unannounced, from what I can tell. My FC likes using the FC house for any gatherings and whatnot (so I end up there from time to time), and hazing new people by having them visit the leader's overwhelming office (IT'S TOO MUCH I TELL YOU).

You're keeping it open on the off chance that a random person will stumble in and use it. It has no actual purpose, you dont even use it regularly yourself as a private home. That's why it's wasteful. Do something actually useful with your house, please.
