I guess it's better than nothing. But there's something logistically wrong and inherently convoluted with a system like this.
Blade and Soul has a system where gear has no stats but there is a "stat wheel" type thing so all clothing is "vanity gear" but you still have a gear slot system, only thing is the "gear" is not typical clothing.
it would be nice to be able to not look almost exactly like all the other blms out there
I totally support that idea !
I know some people who, besides the actual content of the game, like to find what looks best on their character.
It'd give us a way to differentiate ourselves from the others, instead of looking like clones, and still be able to have correct stats.
Have those against this been conditioned into wearing a work uniform in bed? In every story ever told featuring heroes how are they usually dressed? I doubt the answer is "the same as everyone else they meet on their journey who have similar skills!"
The op made clear and excellent points about restrictions, you would still know a BLM from a WAR, but you would likely know that that WAR right there is X and not Y without looking at the name. What's wrong with that?
I almost think this is what the materia system was supposed to do, but until we can meld to U/U we are stuck looking like rank and file troops and not ADVENTURERS!
In short, I would be so, so happy were this implemented. I'm ambivalent about the restrictions, but either way it would be wonderful just to have one of these 'mannequins' they're planning set aside for fashion. The developers have in the past responded to similar ideas with 'we'll consider it' so...
Thanks for suggesting it.
The other option of course is to take Aion's approach and make it so gear can be assigned the model of any other item you already possess that's in the same type. Either way.
That said, bobbygunz above also had a lovely suggestion, although probably one unworkable at this point. I love systems that are divorced entirely or even partially from aesthetics, like in Phantasy Star Universe, or Mabinogi.
There is no reason it works in one MMO and not another, it will work well in any MMO, one example, you do some quests and get awesome looking U/U gear, (hmm lets call this AF) this AF gear is sub par by another gear, everyone will jump onto the best in slot gear and everyone looks the same, with this you can look how you want, if you want this awesome looking subpar gear, it will have a use as a vanity item rather than -1 inventory.
Ohat army we have intelligence some noob is wearing full AF at level 75, we must turn them to the religion of Ohat, TO ARMS!!!!
I fully support this.
This feature is becoming a standard in mmo's, making it a must have in order for FFXIV to compete with other games. It's great for eliminating player clones. It's also very easy to implement. Here are two other threads that also request such a feature, go have a look and please support them also, maybe can add them to the OP as well.
