Ocean fishing is horribly designed

The question is, will people enjoy fisher if they cant even level it outside of this? I mean all that is left if you are lvl 80 are nodes with fish. Fish that even outside of big fish have quite the conditions to catch. What will people do if they have it at lvl 80 and realize that this means nothing? There is nothing else than to fish and if you enjoy fishing (and I do for most of the time) then you will level it in no time even without that new content.

If ocean fishing would have been the new endgame content for maybe lvl 70+ fishers where you need skill and it has more to do than just really fast fishing, people might be willing to level that job up because they have something they look forward to. Now you have something for a level one that might get a huge amount of exp but I wonder if they will find the job interesting afterwards.

I just wonder why we needed another content for fast easy leveling (and if they are lucky they even get the mount and pet too) when leveling itself is fast. Ishgard has one part where newer people gained something but most of it is for those at max level, especially the new parts. Ocean fishing might get new routes but I doubt that they would suddenly restrict those for other especially if they keep the timer.

Hard to know.... though I can say this much. My friends in game told me that fisher is a lot more enjoyable once you get to do spear fishing, but since that's not till you're 60+ level, the process of getting there for a new fisher is a bit daunting.

I just did some Ocean Fishing.

I might have gotten lucky, but I got a score of 7315 and then an 80% bonus pushing me to 13176.

So I now have the mount and the minion.

For what purpose should I ever bother going back?

A handful of achievements?

Experience on the literal easiest and fastest job in the game to level?

Like, I've spent 25 minutes on this content and it's already dead to me. There's nothing for me to gain from it. No rewards like Materia or Tomestones (Heck, even Poetics would be worth something). Just a bunch of crappy level 1 fish that sell for pittance and desynth into garbage.

I think that's awesome luck. A lot of us are doing it dozens of times across multiple days without coming close to your score and no end in sight yet lol. I still have never caught a rare fish during an intuition buff, or seen a run with spectral currents for all 3 locations.

Ocean fishing is not a end game content for FSH. Its for group content, a throwback and social, thats it. Its not long, its fun, its rng, and u can powerlevel and do something different. Its nice, a change from the whole game from time to time.

But why could it not have been its endgame? Crafting will get theirs with Ishgard so why not do one for fishing. You can already level it up so fast and outside of this there is nothing but just catching fish again and again. If they could have done something different people might have leveled the job up just to play it but in turn its stressfull and if you get lucky you have no reason to get back.

Where is it social? The only group I talked to was on the voyages with friends. And even that was restricted because if you want the mount you have to constantly fish. And even if you dont want it you still have to fish a lot because of the boni that others might need.

I'm with the OP when I say that I very much liked the concept. Hit the high seas, feel the wind in your hair and face, down a bottle of 12 with friends and just have a blast. Hearing about the scoring system made me think of WoW Mythic runs (timed duties with semi-adjustable difficulty). My fears, with this, were that it'd degenerate into a frenzied rush for max score within the given time. I'm sad to see that's the whole thing has boiled down to exactly that.

I noticed that people don't use /sit. No one. For the first time since starting out fishing, and having caught tens of thousands of fish myself, I now realize that the animations for standing up and sitting back down are 'wasted time' until the next cast. "So that's why all these people stay standing". I died a little inside.

Having finished my second run just tonight, I thought I did kinda okay! I listened to some advice to use certain baits in certain locations and doubled my score of last time. 'Nice', was all I could think. But not my friends. I heard one cuss that he missed a cast at the end and could've gotten an even higher score. Furthermore, I noticed this 'party score' button at the score list at the end... and found myself at the bottom. Now I didn't really care for the scoring, but I did feel bad about having the lowest score, because I thought that affected everyone's score.

And here lies my biggest qualm with ocean fishing. It's not the relaxing, sea-faring adventure I had hoped it would be, but has degenerated into some score-slogging party effort that I feel may be prone to harassment if you don't 'perform'.


For improvements, I need but refer to the 'of Dragons Deep' questline. That moment when I captured that Nepto Dragon, now that is great inspiration for this content. I'd feel far more thrilled and excited by that heart-beat sound & screen 'flash' animation whilst in the dead of a storm to have one shot at an elusive big fish than I do from seeing a flashy rainbow effect with merry music in the background and some insignificant fancy-fish-extravaganza.



As for making it actually fun, how about adding a giant sea-monster at the conclusion of the duty where players get a duty action to throw all the fish they'd caught at the monster to slap it into submission. Add cross-hairs to toss it at strategic parts of the monster's body and have it recover if fish reach its mouth so it can eat the fish, rather than take damage from it. Rewards could include gathering scrips, scrip bait, possibly unique bait that helps to capture the big fish out in the open world, you name it.
It's just a thought that occurred to me, but something that might improve the overall experience and helps to keep the content relevant in the long run.

I don't normally complain about content they add but I agree with OP wholeheartedly. The fish are absolutely worthless aside from stacking points and the amount of scrips you can get is laughable compared to what you can get just normally grinding gathering scrips.

If it's meant to just be a leveling thing then it's whatever, I guess.

I was able to determine for myself why this is the case.
Since leveling was so quick, I wanted to do the level 40 job quest where you have to catch a fish at Jadeite Thick in Noth Shroud that you can only catch during rainy weather.
I tried about 60 times and never caught a single one of those needed fish, and you have to catch five of them for the quest.
Seriously. This is the most....Job in the game.
